I am going to check out a 1989 Honda Transalp tomorrow and was hoping I could get some opinions or input on the bike. This will be my fourth bike, having previously owned a KLR650, SV650, and a FZ1. I've been communicating with the seller via email and he is asking $1000 for the bike. His description of it is that its in good shape, rideable, 31,000 miles on the engine and it doesn't leak any oil, has good tread on the tires and all the signals/lights work. He goes on to state that he was replaced the fuel petcock and valve and has put on a new shroud, and the main work the bike needs is new brake shoes. Now, I'm not new to riding but I'm definitely pretty clueless when it comes to wrenching. Does this sound like a reasonable deal if the bike isn't trashed or am I getting myself into a world of trouble with this model or a bike this old?

I am looking at purchasing a 1996 Suzuki RF600R w/ 10,000 miles for $1800. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/mcy/1044546137.html I'm unfamiliar with that model or generation and I've tried to do some research on it, but I can't turn up much. Anyone have any opinions or experience with them? This won't be my first bike.

Nerobro posted:Stuff on RF600... Thanks for the information. I did a little more research on it, seems that the riding position on it is pretty brutal for any sort of distance, so being a bigger guy I'm going to avoid that one. I did however find this gem: http://pensacola.craigslist.org/mcy/1044983648.html 1994 VFR750 with 33K miles for $2900. I personally don't know much about the bike, except that it seems to have a rabid following. I plan on giving the guy a ring and checking it out after work. Any thoughts on the bike?

Stoic Commie posted:Well, in my neverending search for my first bike, I have now come upon a 1989 GS500E with 40k miles. Unless you are very handy with a wrench, or hard-pressed for cash, I would recommend against getting a non-running bike that you're unsure how to fix as your first bike. Purchase something that is mechanically sound that you can ride and enjoy first, and wrench on second.

2000 Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird, ahoy! I need some thoughts/opinions on the Blackbird. I found a local one for sale, a 2000 Blackbird with 29,000 miles and an asking price of $3500. Here is a quick rundown of his description of the bike: Pros Scorpion exhausts All services were performed per manual, and a complete maintenance log kept New chain and sprockets in good shape Brake pads in good shape, front was just replaced Avon Storm tires with 1800 miles. Cons Layed down at very low speed, scuffed up exhaust, fairing, and pegs. Pictures of bike and cosmetic damage can be found here: http://s357.photobucket.com/albums/oo13/l_pavilonis/CBR/ I don't have any personal experience with these bikes, but it won't be my first sportbike. I am looking for a big, fast and relatively comfortable bike that I can do a little touring with. I'm thinking for $3500, even with the cosmetics, that this thing is a freaking steal and I need to jump on it if everything checks out. KBB is somewhere around $5300 I believe. Any thoughts or opinions on the bike are appreciated.

Thanks for the replies on the Blackburd. I think I'm going to hold off on buying it for several reasons. First, and most important, the insurance quotes I got for it were thru the loving roof. Second, I was reading thru some of the seller's post on advrider and it sounds like he rides the absolute dog piss out of the thing. I know, they were built to be ridden like that but I prefer one that has been coddled, just incase.

For my tall brethren out there, do you have any experience with the seating position/comfort of a ninja 500r? I am looking at a 2005 Ninja 500r with 5,000 miles for $2900. I'm 6'5. I know the best thing to do is go sit on it, but I'm always open to hearing others inputs.

Im looking at a 2005 zzr 1200 for 4500 firm from a private seller. Has some scrapes along the right fairing, 5k miles. The guy doesnt ride it, has been collecting dust for past year. Only thing he has done is lube the chain. Good deal or no? My previous bikes are sv650 and fz1. I am 6'5 280lbs and havent had a chance to sit on it yet.

I have a full day lined up tomorrow for looking at bikes. The contenders... 2004 Kawasaki KLR 650 - $2800 2000 ZRX1100 - $3100 2005 ZZR1200 - $4500 (slight cowling(?) damage) Long story short, for the distant future the motorcycle will be my sole transportation. I can afford the ZRX and KLR no problem, the ZZR would be tight. I'm a tad worried about the ZRX1100 because its going on 10 years old and I don't know how to turn a wrench. I figure its about time that issues might start popping up. The KLR would be the most bulletproof but also the most bland. I think I'd enjoy the ZZR the most but I would be stretching myself financially. I'm going to sleep on it. The dark horse is going and buying a new DL650 and putting about half down and taking monthly payments

Z3n posted:I don't think you're going to see any more or less reliability out of the ZRX than you will the 650. They're both fairly well known for being pretty reliable...I had a friend who hit 60k on his without any problems, and KLRs are known for theirs reliability. Any thoughts on the ZRX1100? Has about 16k miles, guy is the third owner. Doesn't sound like he has done much maintenance other than put new tires on. What type of services would be coming up? Any common problems you know of?

Thanks for the reply. I just added to my list a 2005 Honda CB900 with 3,500 miles for $4,000. Here is a short description from the ad: This bike is basically brand new. I am the second owner. The first owner only put 1100 miles on it. aftermarket slip on exhaust - carbon fiber Two brothers. professionally installed only fully synthetic racing oil used, changed every 3 months regardless of miles on bike. fender eliminator kit. low profile front turn signals bar end mirrors, I have original mirrors as well. tires are good, they are at about 70% never any mechanical problems. always garaged/ cover kept. front wheel has never left the ground. KBB for the bike is $4,700. The guy said he is holding firm on $4,000 because he has dropped the price several times. Any opinions on this bike?

Z3n posted:Those are good bikes too...although you've got 4 different bikes out of 4 different catagories here. Do you really have a handle on what exactly you want just yet? You've got one sport touring bike, 2 standards, and a dual sport. Yeah, I realize I'm all over the place but I'm on a tight timeline and I need to make a purchase soon. I've been scouring craigslist to find the best deals under $4k ideally. This is going to be mainly my commuter, everything other than that is a big plus. I test rode the ZRX1100 today. It was fun but its going on almost 10 years old and I don't have the wrenching experience to have confidence in its age. I took the KLR for a spin and its exactly how I remembered it. Slow and steady. The old man won't budge on the price so I'm looking at $2900 for that. On the plus side, I discovered a 06 FZ6 and 07 ZZR6. Hopefully I'll get a chance to check those out in the next few days.

Unless something crazy happens, looks like I'll be the owner of a 2006 Yamaha FZ6 with 14,000 miles on it on Sunday. The guy I'm purchasing it from seems like a genuine bike enthusiast so I hope that translates into him taking care of his stuff. Anyone else have one of these? I'm actually excited to try out a high-revving(?) bike, I think it redlines at 14.5k. From what I've read, its extremely docile under 8K but once you get above it then it screams.

infraboy posted:How much are you getting it for? I'm getting it for $3600 and the guy is delivering it about 160 miles roundtrip. KBB is $4100. It includes a stebel nautilus air horn, wired for escort radar detector, fender eliminator, frame sliders, BMW accessory power plug, dual headlight mod. All accessories are wired to an auxillary switched and relayed fuse panel. My main goal was to get something I could commute on, take on longer trips, and have a little oomph when I wanted it. I think I did ok.

After all of that searching, I am now the proud owner of a 2004 Kawasaki KLR650 with 9,000 miles. I had a 2007 several years ago that I had to sell for school so these bikes are not new to me. Its a single-owner bike and the guy already did the Doohickey and sub-frame bolt upgrades. New tires and an aftermarket seat. Since my car blew the headgasket, I'll be with the KLR as my sole means of transportation for a little while. We'll see how that goes. Thanks to the people who gave me advice on the different bikes I was considering.

Lately, I've been itching to get a hypertourer. I don't know why but maybe its because my current KLR650 is so drat slow and I'm stuck on straight, paved roads here in Florida. I've owned an SV650 and FZ1 in the past so I'm not TOO worried about the power. I don't too much about the major players in this category so I was hoping some people could shed some light on these bikes. The only kicker is finding something somewhat comfortable, I'm 6'5 and 280lbs. The bikes I'm looking at are the Blackbird, ZZR1200, Hayabusa and ZX-14. Any thoughts on those or any that I'm overlooking?

Full coverage on a new Suzuki B-King is $200 a month with Progressive. I am 27 and have zero accidents or tickets on my record. I think I'll stick with my KLR650 for a little while.

Tsaven Nava posted:That still seems like a lot, especially for a cheap bike like a KLR. Full coverage on my '04 V-Strom 650 w/$3000 of accessory coverage is $37/month, and identical coverage on my '97 Virago is $15/month. The main thing counting against me is my credit score I think. I'm a safe driver/rider but the mistakes of my youth have hurt my credit, which seems to be a bigger factor to insurance companies. I've been out of the bike market for about 5 years now and have lost track of what's new. What are some of the new options for dual sports? I know of the KLR650, DR650, V-Strom and I saw the post above talking about the FJ-09. Any others to consider if my budget is flexible?

Z3n posted:Probably better to start with your usecase, as those bikes fit broadly different catagories - fat single cylinder offroad bikes that are low powered but good because they're crashable as hell, a fat two cylinder bike that's not really good for much of anything but disappointing the owner, and a very good value to money streetbike that just looks like a dualsport thing. Haha, which one of those is good for disappointing the owner? Also I've owned 2 KLRs in the past, so I know what I'm getting with those. I've recently moved to Colorado so my primary use case would likely be urban -> canyon -> gravel roads. Realistically I probably won't be looking at off-roading up the side of a mountain. Also, I'm a bigger guy at 6'4 280 lbs so something that will be able to fit me and still get out of it's own way. I loved the KLR but I'm thinking I might need something with a bit more rear end to it in this Denver traffic.
