My brother and I have been tossing the idea around of getting a dirt bike or two or something similar for screwing around during the winter. Dirt bikes, as well as two-strokes (these two seem to go hand-in-hand) are pretty foreign to me, so I'm just looking for a little guidance on what I should be looking for.

You need to say a lot more about what you want to do with the bikes, you ability levels, and how much you want to spend.

The idea right now is that it'd just be fun to have something to ride around nearby trails. Being street legal (stock or mods) would be a definite bonus. Our skill levels are pretty low. I just bought a bike a few months ago, so I have some experience with a street bike, but he has none with either street or dirt. As a result of our inexperience, something with a lowish displacement and inexpensive is preferable due to the inevitable hamfisted fuckup.

I say two CR500s.

C'mon, I mean, it's old! And only a 500!

(Note: Do not actually do this. Please.)

Yeah, from what I've gathered, a two stroke is roughly as powerful as a four stroke with twice the displacement, so a CR500 is right out.

Just because I mentioned two strokes in my first post doesn't mean that is all I'm considering, it just means that's what I'm seeing as I browse around craigslist. If there's a four stroke that would be better for this, that's fine. If two strokes are the best bet, I'm fine with learning something new too.

I'm going to try to get a SoCal AI bike/maintenence/bbq day together where we can borrow someone's garage and go over the basics on bikes.

I wish I lived in SoCal. I'd be all over this in a heartbeat.

Police BMWs can be had for a pretty good price, they've got a bunch of miles on them but they will have been well maintained. You may be looking at a clutch replacement at some point but otherwise the engine will keep going for a long while, plus you get a bunch of cool extras:

There's a nice looking R75 in your area: http://austin.craigslist.org/mcy/1106366172.html
You might be able to get that for $2500 and if he has all the service records and has done all the services it should be in very good shape.

Now this is a Police BMW.

My brother doesn't ride (yet), but has been looking for a project. This popped up on craigslist and piqued our interest. Would this be a terrible idea or not?

I know it's hard to say without seeing the actual bike, but what kind of expenses could we expect to get it street legal, other than the title? Only things I can come up with are all the rubber bits, battery, fluids, chain and sprockets. The carbs and tank would obviously need to be cleaned. The electicals would probably need work too.

Is there some place this guy can look to get the model or some other code to identify the bike? I'm going to send him an email to see what he knows about it.

I would wager from the pictures that its an old XS650. The pics are low quality but that engine is pretty distinctive. If it turns out to be a XS650 then there is actually a pretty good following for them out there. Yamaha cranked them out from 1968 all the way till 1983 so there are lots of parts out there.

Looks like you're probably right.

Knowing that, would this bike be worth pursuing? I know he was asking for a project, but how reliable are these bikes? Any gotchas?
