Last night they lost all traction on a moderate stop and I slid halfway out into an intersection (with almost sliding into an intersection twice before.) I dont need the best per se, but something that I wont kill me. Bridgestone RE960as. Wet weather grip is almost as good as in the dry - I think I've only ever lost traction a couple of times in the wet since I've had them.

But I see people are singing their praises, and the tires I have on there now are honestly scary in anything but bone dry so I guess I will be purchasing a set of these come spring. Thanks for the heads up guys. Skimping on tyres is a bit of a false economy tbh - they're the only point of contact between your car and the road. Why they charge more for the terrible RE92 is beyond me.

Screw the AP for now, get some good tyres. RE960s are the best all-seasons you can buy right now. Tire Rack has them for $112 a corner: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...Y&speed_rating=(Y)&minSpeedRating=V As i said earlier, they are the only points of contact between your car and the road - without a doubt THE most important bit to spend money on. I've been dithering on an AP for my 92x for a while now, the tyre upgrade happened as soon as I could push the button. Even compared to the stock RE92s it's like a different car - wet weather handling is insane, and there's so much more grip and feel in the dry, plus they cope with the little bit of snow we get here. Honestly, spend that $5-600 on new rubber now, and do the AP in 6 months time. You might even live long enough to see that happen.

If so can I bother you with 200 questions? Yes, several of us have them. Yes, they're very reliable. The main differences are we got the MY2006 interior a year early, there's more sound deadening, the suspension is tuned a bit differently, and we have the STI steering rack. Yeah, buy the manual. You need to change gears yourself to deal with the lag (which isn't major but it's there) and as long as you don't do stupid things like clutch drops at 5000 rpm it should be fine.

I think i had the same situation, and there was little enough wear on the tyres that I didn't need to replace all four, just the hosed one. Do you have a good wheel and brake shop near you? They should be able to inspect the tyres and see if it'll be alright.

Are the bigger brakes on the 2006/7 WRXs that much better than the earlier efforts? After the 92x's 45k mile service the mechanic told me I need new pads and rear discs, and at the price he quoted I could probably upgrade to the 6 pot fronts and 2 pot rears (http://www.fastwrx.com/sufobrup.html) - should I? Also, anyone used that place in NoVA?
|
| # ¿ May 1, 2009 10:51 |

I was a bit suspicious. The total quote was for $1300, to replace the front pads and machine the front rotors, replace the rears totally as apparently they're 'pretty grooved,' and replace the two 'drive belts' which have 'hairline cracks.' One of the other mechanics there took a look at the belts with me when I picked it up and was all wtf there's nothing wrong with them. The car is running the stock 16"s if they don't clear the bigger rear discs I might not bother because I don't really want to have to buy new wheels and tyres in addition to brakes - I'd rather spend the money on an accessport and a head unit that would let me plug in my iPod.
|
| # ¿ May 1, 2009 13:23 |

The 1300 included replacing the serpentine belts, but I agree it seems a bit outrageous. The weird thing is they've been pretty reasonable otherwise. Doing the brakes myself might be possible (although I doubt the wife would let me) plus I'd have to do them on the street, but I might check out that shop in NoVA.

When I bought my Aero the only demo car they had was an auto, which I drove to get an idea of the rest of the car, and it wasn't a patch on the manual. The turbolag is exacerbated by the slushbox, I'd wait and get the manual if I were you. Of course, this is AI so you're probably going to ignore us all and then post in three weeks saying you hate the auto and how hard is it to swap transmissions.

So, speaking of clutches, I've noticed that when you depress the clutch in the 9-2x, there's a noise, a bit like a much quieter gear whine like you'd get in reverse. I'm quite sure it didn't used to make that noise. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
