I remember some people recommending some book(s) on motorcycle skills, but I can't remember the names of them. I ride dual-sport/touring if there is something tailored to that, but if not that's okay. So if somebody could help me out that would be great.

Realistically, if you ride a lot, you're probably going to be ready to replace a helmet just due to the funk and greasiness of it more often than the 5 year time frame.

Seriously. I end up going through a Shoei a year riding daily here in Az.

Everyone should read Proficient Motorcycling, by David Hough. Many people should look into Twist of the Wrist (2?) by Keith Code.

I haven't read any good Dual Sport guides, but this looks promising: http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Gui...g/dp/188431371X

What causes you to replace your helmets so much? Mine seems to last me several years unless I do something silly like drop it often (happened with my first street helmet). Every helmet worth wearing seems to come with removable liners so they can be washed to get rid of the funk. I just can't imagine replacing Shoei's that often when they cost as much as they do.

Mine has removable liners that can be washed but I have washed them quite a few times and that fresh smell only stays for 15 minutes then the entire thing smells like old sweat again.

Buy a replacement liner? Surely cheaper than buying a new helmet, especially if you're running Shoeis like BlackMK4

Try spraying it with that stuff for cleaning the inside of shoes? Smells are normally caused by bacteria and fungus, so you're probably not killing them off with washing.

I ordered some Bridgestone Battleax BT45 front/rear tires for my Ninja 500, and because Motorcycle Superstore ships from warehouses all around the country the front tire shipped from Oregon to Seattle and the other from Kentucky to Seattle. My front tire is already at the service center, and the rear doesn't show until Tuesday. Would it be beneficial or foolish to go get my front tire installed a solid week or more before I could get my rear installed?

If some moron when washing their bike had a brain fart and scoured the back of their metal mirrors and clear plastic wind shield giving it a nice new milky appearance; is their anything that can be done other than pointing and laughing at me the moron?

In all seriousness, I'm not too bothered about the wind shield, it's some cheap aftermarket piece of poo poo that fires wind straight into my helmet, at least I've got an excuse to replace it with the proper Suzuki part. But I'm a bit gutted about the mirrors

Hey guys, passed the CBT, and yes yes I'll post pics of my little 125 later. Two quick question, I'm parking it on a hill facing up the hill . After mucking about, it seems that it's best to put it in first gear then turn it off, am I right in saying that? Is perfectly stable in neutral, it's just that ease of rolling that worries me.

The other thing is, I take it a CBR 125 doesn't have a fuel tap?

edit: Bonus third and fourth questions! A slight smell of petrol after parking and turning off the bike is perfectly normal, right? And if I lightly dropped my helmet (two feet maximum) and it also got a very mild tap against a door (was carrying it), is there any point getting it checked or will it be fine?

Always leave it in first when you park up, hill or not. If anything bumps it or some idiot goes messing with it and its in neutral there's a good chance it'll roll off the kickstand.

edit: seems the newer cbrs don't have a fuel tap, your helmet will be fine. not sure about the smell of petrol, bikes smell of petrol a bit more noticeably than cars, especially if it was as hot in the uk as it was here today.

Do you have it chained to anything? Because a CBR125 not chained to anything will disappear pretty quickly.

If you're having a shop mount your tires they're likely to charge you more for two visits (since it will in fact take more time.) Also you'll have to scrub in new tires twice instead of once. Just wait.

I'm gay for Michael Phelps.

But everyone's gay for someone - right? RIGHT?

So I'm thinking of getting a new exhaust to upgrade from the stock on my Kawasaki Mean Streak 1600. The Mean Streak is a mostly-black situation such as in this picture here:

The exhaust system I'm looking at is chrome, so I need to get it ceramic/powder coated black. How much does this usually run, price-wise? All I've ever heard is "I had my friend powder coat mine", "I know a guy who knows a guy who did mine" etc etc. I don't know a guy, so I need to look at actual shops but I don't know what baseline price is, so I don't know who's trying to rip me off.

Edit: Or! Would it be useful at all to use Thermo-Tec Exhaust Wrap on the chrome? Would it provide any real world benefit to heat dispersion?

It's an EFI cbr, so it won't have a tap.

E: suggest a cover and chain from back wheel through the frame or swingarm coupled with a disc lock at the front. At least stops it being wheeled away, though not chucked in a van. Could you chain it to a lamppost or similar?

Vistacruise are very nice and generally $25. When adjusted properly they add just enough friction to hold the throttle in place - the term throttle lock really is outdated. I personally cannot ride long distances without some form of lock. I find those cramp busters to be horrible.

I'm finally getting around to draining the fuel tank on my '81 Honda CX500C to stop its slow leak all over my back yard. As I was taking off the fuel valve, I noticed that the bolt that held it to the tank was loose enough to move with my fingers. I don't suppose that could be the source of the leak right there?

The actual fuel line looks pretty good. It's a bit dirty on the outside, but the inside of the tube doesn't look rotted at all. Should I replace it anyway?

I'd initially blame the bolt. Clean both the bolt and the packing surface and show that bastard what red Loctite does to loose things.

I've used red Loctite on my wife for years, and so far no problems.

Serious answer: Yes, it's that goddamn bolt.

Boru
Apr 30, 2008

Awesome. I had to go out and buy a big rear end wrench special for this bolt, but I encouraged it back to a full and locked on position. If it still gives me trouble I'll go out and get some Loctite in on the action. I replaced the fuel tube anyway while I was at it, and re-secured the air and vacuum tube. I can't be 100% sure, but it looked like the air tube wasn't even attached in back (at least not very well) so hopefully trimming the tube and slapping new clamps on will do the trick.

As a side note why do clamps suck so much? I have the ones you squeeze and the screw on ones, and they both just are colossal pains in the rear end.

The metal things inside the rubber things? Dealer or bikebandit. They'll probably call it a spacer or a sleeve or something. Probably won't have it in stock so you'll have to wait a while to get them.

I'm a little hazy on what parts you've got there and what parts you took off, but you might want to take the parts in to a shop and see if they have an opinion on whether the major bits are too badly damaged. I see a lot of ugly scoring there.
