So I'm a new (4-5mo) rider and I did my first track day at Firebird East.

What causes the bluing I'm seeing here? Is it something to be worried about? The tires have like 800mi on them, 600 of them being twisties, 100 track, and 100 highway. I was running 31/29 in the tires.

Why do people change the sprockets so often on bikes? On CL about half the sportbikes have some type of changed gearing, usually shorter it seems. Do 600CC sport bikes not accelerate fast enough for normal people? Or is a 160ish top speed not enough either?

I'd kind of understand if it were a track bike but for street use it seems silly.

Down one up two on a stock 600 wakes the bike up a shitload. Also, complaining about mild gearing changes on a 600cc supersport saying it seems silly for the street is ridiculous, the bikes are already huge overkill in the first place. I don't need first to top out at 85mph, so I deal with shorter gearing and some touchiness for curing a lot of the down low lag that 600s seem to have with stock gearing. Dropping gearing also puts the bike in the power at fairly lower speeds, which is pretty nice on back roads where you don't want to be way up there in speed but want to have fun.

It depends on the shock type, without getting too involved. Reasons would be better clearance if you're doing something custom.

I sent my stock 09 ZX6R Ohlins steering damper to Dan Kyle Racing and had the needle valve swapped for the real Ohlins piece for $100. Worth every drat penny on this bike the way I have it geared... the lightest setting is stiffer than the previous hardest setting and shake is an issue on this bike.

In the winter, I'm sure regular leather will be fine (I wore a non-motorcycle leather jacket all winter when I was interning down there, kept me at just the right temp).
Not cali, but Arizona. I wear an Alpinestars textile jacket year round with an Alpinestars bionic race back protector at all times. As far as gloves, I wear the Alpinestars short cuff leather gloves which have got like 30k miles on them and are holding up great. Boots are Alpinestars SMX Pluses, which are nice for the street but I will go with Sidis next time. Pants are textile Joe Rockets that are one size too big so they fit over my jeans fine - I just have a the Joe Rocket piece also sewed into my jacket so I can zip them on.

When it's really, really hot I have a Joe Rocket mesh jacket, but I feel like an idiot wearing it.

The jacket is ok in the summer because it has vents and it works in the winter because it has a 'waterproof' liner. Going out to ride for fun I wear my track gear though.

Eh? You can use all of its power on the street, you're just going to get tickets if you're not careful. The 600s aren't real great as a daily because it has no real power below 6-8k and once you feel that power start to come in it tickles the back of your mind all the time. Also, they aren't the most comfortable things ever to ride. I enjoy my 09 zx6r as my daily and trackday toy, I've never really had issues riding 600-800 mile days on it.

Same complaints people have about the Honda S2000, there are some people that can handle the nature of the thing and there are those that hate it. I personally love peaky toys.

edit: thinking about it, if you are asking this question then get the 650.

From everything I've heard, you can expect ridiculous rear end mileage out of pilot roads. I'm considering getting just the rear next time around and pairing it with a slightly more sporty pilot power up front since the front PP takes forever to wear down.

I saw 11k out of a set of PR2, and I -think- I will be running them as my next tires on my street wheels. I got 5k out of a Pilot Power 180/55 rear with a lot of twisty riding thrown in on a CBR600F4i.

Quick turn-in is what the PPs are known for... I ended up liking the feel of Bridgestones and Dunlops better - slower turn-in but more stable. Haven't gotten to try a Pirelli yet though, but I guess I will end up going that way since it's the tire most known to cure the chatter in the zx6r chassis.

I spoke to a Ducati specialist, and he asked me if I can hear the fuel pump kicking on (which its supposed to do once you turn the key) and I realized that I don't.

A google search for 2005 Monster fuel pump shows there was a recall of the fuel pump but my vin falls out of the range of vins that are affected by the recall.

Thinking of taking it in to the shop to get raped now, because I can't even find a replacement fuel pump anywhere on the internet.

Thoughts?

http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/shop/catalog/ducati/fuel.html

After failing to find a reasonable replacement for the costly OEM Ducati EFI fuel pump, we commissioned these pumps to be made for us! Exact replacement for all "holster type" fuel pumps on Ducatis with the fuel pump flange plate. Exact replacement for these Ducati models: MH900e (all years), S2R1000, S2R800, 999, 749, Multistrada MTS, Hypermotard HM, S4Rs. Also compatible with all "metal tank" Monsters and SSie models (the OEM pump has shorter length but is not a problem because the pump is clamped along the body). Standard pump designed for use at 3.5 bar (Ducati spec), while HP pump is 4.5 bar for use on racing engines with modified pressure valves. Dealer inquiries welcome. Mikuni fuel pump is good substitute for carb'd Monsters.

More of a track question, but how do you guys handle really long corners with few reference points? I always find myself having a poo poo line or inconstant... especially the slow corners. The bike doesn't feel like it settles or is as stable, but I guess that would come down to throttle control?

For example, turn 4 at Firebird East

I loving hate this corner, I feel like I lose a lot of time there but I'm able to make up a lot in 8, 9, and 10.

There is also a corner at my old ride spot that is the same.

What specifically are you asking? As long as you're going inside at the first corner to the outside / midtrack-ish back to inside you should be fine. Depending on how wide that straight section is between the corners you can go further outside to carry speed most likely.

If that corner is just one long corner and not two right angles then your problem becomes holding a line. I find that sometimes on sharp u-turn corners it's harder to hold a line if you aren't going in fairly quick. You're going to have a tendency to stand the bike back up if you go in slow without enough speed to keep leaned over.
All of the racers begin their turnin extemely late and right at the edge of the track treating it as one corner. Finding a line and staying on it is my issue because it's so long.
