You should always let those dudes get a little lead on you before dropping it from 4th to 2nd and riding a wheelie past them.

I've only ever had one guy on a harley try to race me and yes, all I remember is hearing a bunch of gear changes behind me and then myself going up to second. Related: the Easy Rider bike is for sale. article posted:The customised Captain America chopper Peter Fonda rode in "Easy Rider" has come to symbolise the counterculture of the 1960s. Now it's for sale. It will be like the ultimate, purest, most synthesised stereotypical harley that is both unrideable and never gets ridden.

Now, I guess, it's a ~Cafe Racer~. It was awful. I should have taken a picture, but I was with a client. Also, driving south on the FDR drive, there was this yupster on a flat black 883 Sportster wearing a business suit, hockey/skate helmet, and business office slippers with no socks.

Got into Reno today. Virginia city is pretty cool. It is incredibly smoky here. Going to get to the Harley dealer tomorrow and see if they have that sensor. If not I'll have Al Lighton overnight me one to Chico. Slavvy, what's your address? I figure you win my sensor as the closest guesser.

Hey this is really off topic but I was in Reno 2 weeks ago for the races. If you're looking for a good deal, buy the coupon on costco.com for the peppermill for $100 which is a room in the Tuscany tower with a $45 credit in the resort for food or a massage or whatever. If you're going to be there for a few days it'll make it more enjoyable

Slim Pickens posted:Huh? So this constitutes a terrible cafe racer now? No, because that one still has the rear subframe. And as close as Ducati gets to a real seat. (And the front fender, and no one's tried to shoe-horn a Honda tank on it, etc) Honestly though old Monsters get grungy/rusty/generally worn out rapidly if the owners don't meticulously keep them up, and with as cheap and plentiful as they are it's not a huge loss if they fall to hackers. That's assuming someone didn't take a decent quality or straight-up brand new Duc and hack it up, which, that anecdote being in NYC, has pretty good odds.

Slim Pickens posted:Huh? So this constitutes a terrible cafe racer now? I wish I had a picture. The one I saw was as if someone just hack sawed off the rear half of the sub-frame and put on some different seat the could accommodate the very short bit of sub-frame left. Your pic is a work of art compared to that thing.

In Washington DC. I have some time to go wandering and there aren't any good shops around me, so I figure I'll go take a look at one and see if I could find a decent bluetooth speaker or maybe a good backpack. Lots of commuters around here.

Reno to Chico today. Endured 60 miles of cold mountain rain. One of my plug wires doesn't like being wet, add that to the list of Buell stuff. Road to Lassen Peak was snowed out, that was a bummer. Hotel in walking distance from Sierra Nevada Brewing is not a bummer. CA route 32 was really fun.

Head is back on, in a condition which I think will run for a few years but I won't sell it for fear of being THAT PO. Ordered a new valve cover gasket from wemoto.com, instead of coming flat on a cardboard it was bunched up inside some bubble wrap. I guess that's how they do it? Fine with me. Spent an hour scraping gasket goo off the valve cover, settled on good enough and unwrapped the new gasket... Somewhere there is a Honda rider who has to wave a valve cover gasket when he wants to turn left.

I knew my muffler wouldn't survive the trip. I threw some wire around it to keep the end cap on from Yakima, home. I'll replace it with a stock muffler. I saw more motorcycles in the last 50 miles of western Washington than at the rally we checked out in Reno. Not a great rally, but I love riding in Idaho and Nevada. The casino paid for my gas home, so that was cool too.

Came home today from visiting my parents over the weekend, and my bike is gone. It was locked to a street sign and covered, but it's just gone. Not even a trace of the lock or even signs of someone cutting it, the only thing left was the cover, lying on the ground. I checked my apartment, all the keys are where they should be. So either they cut the lock/chain, which was one of the strongest lock+chain combinations ABUS makes, or they lifted everything almost 3 meters into the air to slip the chain over the street sign, bike and all. They obviously didn't just cut through the frame, because then the chain would still be there. gently caress this bullshit. This is why we can't have nice things. Battery-powered angle grinders have ruined everything.

I am. I was actually going to drop the theft coverage in a year or so, since the payout on bikes older than 6 years starts to drop off sharply. I have no idea how much i can get from the insurance, actually.

KozmoNaut posted:I am. I don't know how it works where you are, but start pulling ads for similar year/mileage bikes to yours, so when the adjuster eventually gets in touch with their below-market-value quote, you can tell them no based on the ads you've got. They should amend their quote and give you market value, minus your deductible. (Unless they have some kind of fixed value policy or something, which I don't even know if that's a thing).

Unfortunately, there are very few XT660Xs for sale in the entire country. There's only one 2008 like mine, and it's got zero kilometers on it, so it doesn't count. Deductible is 20% for theft.

If it's locked, my deductible is 1500 kr (about 200USD), no matter the value of the bike.

Theft damage is not theft. Theft damage is when you get it back and they've rattlecanned it blue and rashed up the fairings. There are videos on the Youtubes of security guys going through those chains in a matter of seconds with a big enough pair of bolt cutters. If they've got hydraulic ones, forget it. You don't need a screaming angle grinder to get through them. Although why someone would steal an XT660X or how they plan to offload it - even parting it out seems troublesome - is a mystery and might mean you'll see it again.
