I'm just gonna do a little bit of ranting:

1) Can someone please make Nethack playable on the DS? Whoever does it should model it around Powder.

2) When will we have a version of World of Sand that actually has some legitimate element interactions, like fire being used to boil water and the like?

PS. Why doesn't someone do a SkiFree port onto the DS? That game ruled.

HomeBrew on DSi

Narin posted:

Just a heads up folks, what was used to do this was a save game exploit. So far, there are currently 3 known save game exploits but so far, none of them can be used to play commercial games or flashcards, just homebrew. There are groups of people right now trying to find all the save game exploits they can.

Now the problem with save game exploits is Nintendo can release Firmware updates that can patch these exploits and delete them off the game cartridges making them useless. So even if an exploit was used to play games/homebrew, once it becomes public, its only a matter of time before a firmware update is made to prevent it.

So unless a custom firmware can be made, there is no long term solution to play pirated games or homebrew on the DSi. Now the problem is, the firmware is digitally signed making it near impossible for it to be hacked or a custom firmware to be used unless its signed by Nintendo.

So as it stands, the only feasible method to get Homebrew and backups to run on the DSi at the moment would be through hardware modification such as a modchip unless the digital signature used by Nintendo is cracked. Keep in mind that the DS Phat and DS Lite used RSA signatures for download play which has yet been cracked even after numerous attempts by various groups to do so.

There's a new Nethack port to DS, called HackDS, here - no idea how it plays as I can't currently test it, but it looks good, at least.

The thing I liked most about the other one (a few posts up) is that I didn't have to memorize 90 different bizarre /commands and hotkeys. That is the main thing that kept me out of Nethack all these years. Even if this new one is better, unless it has a screen that displays all the commands, I'm gonna steer clear.

Well the guy who made this new version also had a very similar version for GBA (you can check his site here, there's also a Rogue port for GBA), which I imagine had some sort of workaround for the lack of keyboard support, so maybe that carried over to the DS version. I'll find out for sure in half an hour or so.

Nah, the DS audio hardware sucks. You can increase volume in Moonshell by pressing Y, but it'll sound horribly distorted.

Cross-post with the DS General Discussion thread. It looks like my DS Lite has succumb to the infamous hinge cracking problem that plagued the early DS lite models. The top case no longer opens or closes properly, leaving me with a sorry excuse for a hand held console.

Instead of buying a whole new DS, does anyone have recommendations for any custom case mods I can buy to replace the current, white one that I have? It would be interesting to learn what's the best out there to get.

It seems like the Acekard team is the first flashcart team to publicly announce that they've been able to run a flashcart (their Acekard flashcart) on a Nintendo DSi. This is quite impressive, so congratulations to the team. You should know that this was done internally by the team, they're still doing testing and research. Official announcement by the team below.

quote:

This is a lab work, it works ONLY in LAB. Even though we can go this far, it is almost impossible to make a commercial product.
There is a major problem that can't be resolved, at least for now.
It seems DSi did many sanity checks to make sure there is no more flashcards. We will keep researching and good luck to all.

We assume there are more than one modes on DSi, we still haven't found any way to access the SD card slot in origin DS mode.

quote:

Team Cyclops joins the Acekard team with being the first teams to get their flashcarts to run on the Nintendo DSi.
Note that this is an internal "experiment" - the team has yet to release much information on the subject (other than what has been announced).
Official announcement below.

quote:

Team Cyclops are pleased to announce that for some time we have had a working test setup which is capable of running CycloDS Evolution on the Nintendo DSi. We must stress however that this is part of our research only; there is still a great deal of work to be done before we can even decide if a DSi compatible device is viable or not. The DSi features a completely redesigned security system which renders all current devices incompatible and at this stage it is unknown if there is any reliable way to overcome the new measures. We will continue our research into the DSi and in the mean time, please see the following video which demonstrates what we have achieved so far.
They seem to be careful to stress that it's just the first step but still. It's better than "it's impossible".

I bought a replacement shell from DealExtreme; it's the worst piece of poo poo I've ever worked with. Took me hours to assemble, because the build quality was just too loving horrible. Note that this is coming from someone who does Nintendo repairs for work, specializing in DS Lite (not trying to brag, I just want to stress that the crap I bought there isn't very fun to put together).

In the end I had to swap back to my old case, but I didn't bother disassembling the top again, and it's not scratch resistant at all, so the Lite looks absolutely horrible these days. I've named it the Zombie DS. :zombie:

CycloDS 1.5 Final released. Not much new for those who who have been getting the betas, unless you are a dirty PIRATE.

* Added the in-game text reader feature
* Battery saver mode added
* An alternative folder layout for game saves and RTS files is now supported
* Configurable rumble strength though settings menu
* Fixes to the cheat code engine
* GBA support dramatically improved and moved out of BETA. Saving problems should now be resolved and the 1MBit save type is now supported without the need to manually patch games
* Classic NES Series GBA games are now supported
* Added "cycle skin" feature which is similar to the random skin feature, except that skins are cycled in order and are not chosen at random
* Game compatibility fixes (2906, 2949, 2436, 2472)
* Various other bug fixes and improvements

As per usual don't even bother trying to download it from the teamcyclo website, here is the GBAtemp mirror

ok i should have said unless you are a pirate or gay because it fixes the japanese chrono trigger and clone wars and you are only playing clone wars if you are gay.

Kly posted:

you have to put it in the same folder as the game, and it has to have the same name as the game (ie pirated chrono trigger.nds has to have a text file called pirated chrono trigger.txt to work)

Gerudo Rivera
Jan 22, 2005

fairly sure you can also put text files in a directory called TEXT in the microsd root, although they do indeed have to have a matching name to the ROM you're loading (yes FAG we know some people use flashcarts to pirate games, you're hilarious really)

I recommend using LineBreaker on the text files to make them more easily readible on the Cyclo. If you're getting faqs from GameFAQs, be sure to save them from the orange "view/download original file" link at the top of the FAQ page to make sure you don't get any strange formatting artifacts

When people say "rip" games, they usually mean download the games they own. Ripping, as I understand it, is a prohibitively time-consuming process. Downloading a rom of a game you own is no more or less illegal than ripping it yourself. Just bite the bullet and download, you'll still have the cartridge you bought as proof of ownership.

With any slot-1 cart and an Ez-Flash 3-in-1, DS games can easily be ripped. (In 32MB chunks, mind you, so large games can take two or four cycles.) I forget the name of the homebrew that does it, but from what I've seen, it works quite well.

Oh, well of course, everything looks bad if you remember it.
Well, I'm trying to decide on either an iPod touch or a DS for my future movies/music/game-playing. I was hoping the emulation support for the DS would be stellar, since that would be my primary focus of it. But that doesn't sound like it's the case...dammit. I have a modded Xbox and am used to having near-perfect compatibility for most consoles.

There's still hope...right? :unsmith:

Its called NDS Backup Tool. The 3in1 version isn't as slow as the wifi one in Buchanandorf's link, but it did take about 20 minutes for Disgaea and almost as long for the newest Phoenix Wright.

Yeah, I just buy them and then download a ROM dump. I won't say where, but there are a few sites you can easily get them from, but that is some serious :filez: talk, so don't even think about posting any of the links to that poo poo. In several cases, however, I got the game on release or it's an obscure game I couldn't find a dump for (Rocket Slime) so I just ripped it myself. I have no idea how you'd do it with a Cyclo, I have an M3 Lite, so ripping DS games is quite simple. Getting that dumped ROM to run correctly, however, is sometimes annoying.

Okay, this post/discussion is approaching dangerous territory. I'm no mod, but if you have questions about it, I suggest you take it PMs or do some google searching, because this is not the place to be discussing ROM stuff, this is a homebrew thread.
