If you won't try to find coherence in the world, have the courtesy of becoming apathetic.

This is the Let's Play Sandcastle. This thread is for general discussion of any topic not covered elsewhere in the forums regarding Let's Play threads. It's also the place that you can make a test post to see if there are any issues to resolve with your LP thread before posting it.

READ THIS ENTIRE OP. PARTICULARLY THE PART TELLING YOU WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER POST AN INTEREST CHECK AND ALWAYS POST A TEST POST

The official Let's Play FAQ

Note: this is endorsed but not written by slowbeef. Make sure you read the rules thread too.

Q: What is a Let's Play (LP) thread?
A: It's a documented playthrough of something that, at the very minimum, resembles a game; how the author chooses to present it is incredibly varied. Some use screenshots, some use video. Some let the readers make decisions, others plow on through and use the thread for discussion. Some are serious and informative while others are parodies. For some examples, see the LP archive - details below.

Q: What is this thread for?
A: This thread is intended to be a general discussion and information thread about Let's Plays. Although this thread may not be the place for every question, any useful links or information you may need about Let's Play threads can be found through the Sandcastle.

Specifically, this thread is used for test posts.

Making Let's Plays

READ THIS HERE
Q: What is a test post? Why should I make a test post?
A: Let's Play threads take a lot of work. There are a lot of unforeseen problems that can crop up with your threads so it is best to make a test post - it costs you nothing, and lets you gauge how people are going to feel about your thread. This is especially true if you have not done an LP before and have no experience of what issues may come up, but a test post is almost always useful no matter how much experience you have.

A test post can vary depending on the LP, but usually will consist of the first update. This means it isn't just your OP - since that usually doesn't tell people anything more than what the game is about. It's useful to post your OP as well to give the first update some context, but make sure you post an update.

Also consider that if your first update will not be representative of the whole game (due to excessive tutorial sections or other reasons) then pick a later update and post that. The idea is to give people an idea of what your thread will be like so they can point out potential problems.

The other benefit is that you can tell if people are going to enjoy your LP thread. Of course there's no point in doing an LP that you won't enjoy, but it's equally true that there's no point in doing an LP that everyone else will hate too. Make a test post, and see how it goes, and maybe people will suggest some improvements you didn't think of. It also gets you an idea of just how much work an LP is - and if you can really finish it.

However, even with all the above applying, test posts are not a requirement. Just a very, Very good idea.

AND THIS
Q: How can I ask if anyone is interested in me LPing this game?
A: There's no point in posting an "interest check" without something to show for it. For the most part, people won't really care if you LP the game or not, and it's very difficult to judge whether an LP would be interesting or not without seeing any of it. If you want to know if people are interested, make a test post - don't just post "Would anyone like to see an LP of this game?". This applies no matter how much you have to decide before starting, or if you're unsure about how to LP the game. If you're not willing to put in the effort to trying different ways to see what you and other people like then don't bother posting at all.

Q: Has anyone LPed game XYZ before?
A: The answer to this can be found in the master list - details are below. However it is worth noting that there is no rule nor stigma towards LPing a game that has been done before. Don't rush to LP a game in case someone beats you to it - no one will care.

Q: How do I make a Let's Play?
A: There's no straight answer to this question in any situation. LPs can be very varied in style, even taking one game into account - when you consider all the games out there, there is potential for a huge variety and creativity in your thread, if you so desire. Consider reading or watching some other LPs that are perhaps similar to either the style or game you'd like to try.

For technical issues, your best bet is to post any specific questions in The Tech Support Fort, posted by Null Set, who should really stop wearing lady coats if I should cut my hair.

Q: I'm not the OP in this thread. Can I contribute my own playthrough?
A: The short answer is, maybe. It is generally considered good practice to ask the OP for permission, in case he has plans that you may interfere with. Certainly you shouldn't show any content that the OP has not already covered without his permission. Most people and most thread posters will appreciate the bonus content which may show off something the OP had no plans to cover.

If the thread has been abandoned by the OP, go wild - it's no longer theirs. There have been plenty of cases of LPs being successfully recovered by another poster after the OP abandoned it.

Q: Is there a rule against X? Am I allowed to do Y?
A: This isn't the rules thread. Ask a mod - slowbeef (e-mail him at slowbeef@somethingawful.com, but PM is preferred) is your best bet, after reading the rules thread.

Here is a specific note about ROMs, emulation, etc. (Reprinted with permission.)

Louisgod posted:

1. Do NOT talk about how you acquired a ROM, where you got the ROM, when you got it, and so forth. Just because you're posting in Let's Play! doesn't mean you get immunity from any kind of warez discussion.

2. DO NOT EVER ADMIT TO PIRATING A GAME. Seriously, stop. There are no exceptions to this rule. From this point on if you admit to pirating a game, whether to share impressions or to say that you're buying it because you pirated it, you WILL be banned.

3. Do not post links to sites that host emulators, ROMs, or any sort of illegal file. Doesn't matter if it's a link to a site that hosts links to other sites, just don't post it. This goes for any type of file. On that note, torrents are not allowed either.

4. You can LP any game you want, just do not talk about pirating in any way, shape or form.

Miscellaneous

Q: Waffleupload doesn't work anymore, is there an alternative?
A: Yes, try Rightload, it has a waffleimages preset.

Q: What image formats should I use?
A: Although this is technically the ground of The Tech Support Fort this is restated here for emphasis. Read this guide before posting images in this forum. You will learn things - learning is good.

Q: Why isn't Mechanical Hand called Mechanical Hand anymore?
A: Because he's kind of a butthole. I mean what kind of name is Null Set anyway? I think he's just an idiot.

LP Resources

The Let's Play Rules Thread
Everyone posting in this forum should read this thread, for obvious reasons. The rules cover everything that will get you banned or probated so make sure you have read them. Of particular note since it seems to be the one people forget most often, make sure you read the 6 month rule and understand it.

For any questions about the rules send slowbeef a message.

LP Recommendations (offsite LPs) and LP Requests
If you're interested in reading rather than making LPs - these threads are for you. The first allows you to post or read recommendations for past LP threads you have read and enjoyed. Read the thread OP to make sure you know the rules for recommendations. The second allows you to request an LP that hasn't been done - make sure you check the master list to see if it has been done before.

The Tech Support Fort
The Tech Support fort is the place to go if you have any practical-minded questions about how to make your LP. If you want to know how to use your recording software, or what recording or editing software you should get - post in here. The sandcastle is generally only for once you have your LP made satisfactorily, or before you've started making anything.
Also of note is the old How to Make a Let's Play Thread. As of the time of writing, that thread is getting merged into the Tech Support Fort but it may be worth a read if you want to pick up any old information.

The LP IRC channel
This is a well-populated IRC channel with members of this forum. If you need to ask a question or want to interact with people in real time, this is the place to go. Do note however though that it is not official, and IRC drama shouldn't be brought onto the forums.

LPix
An LP-specific image host, oriented to keeping separate updates and things. There is a rightload plugin available here, for which you will need the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable installed. If there are any problems with it, post in this thread or contact baldurk.

The Let's Play Master List
The Master List contains as complete as possible a list of all Let's Plays that have been started on this forum. It was written to provide all the functionality needed for locating and updating information about Let's Play threads.

If you want to find a thread, you can browse or search - but be aware that by default, abandoned threads have been hidden. If you want to find out if a game has been done before, make sure you search for it, in case the previous thread was abandoned - and thus not on that list.

In order to update out of date information on the list, you can log in with the login: SALP / snatched. If you notice any vandalism on the list, feel free to fix it. If you don't know what it should be, or there is a significant amount of destruction, contact baldurk and he can fix it.

The master list is also used to provide the information for the Let's Play archive - so all information and searching available on the master list also includes the archive. This means if you are searching for a thread, you don't need to check the master list and the archive separately.

Master list issues - anything that is related to the master list can be posted about in this thread. If you have any questions, comments, bug reports or feature requests they can all go in there.

The Let's Play Archive
Set up and hosted by From Earth in early 2007, the Let's Play Archive is a list of LP threads which are copied in their entirety, for viewing on the site. As of the time of writing, over 300 threads have been archived to the site and can be read.

In late 2008 the kind folks over at archive.org offered to host VLP videos so we didn't have to worry about them disappearing. You can find the LP collection here.

For more information, you can read for yourself what the LP Archive is all about, and you win a prize for actually reading the OP at all - that's better than most people manage.

If you are a thread author who would like to see your thread archived, or are an interested reader who would like to see your favourite LP archived, send a link to it to admin@lparchive.org.

Archive issues - anything that is related to the archive can be emailed to the same address: admin@lparchive.org. If you have any questions, comments, bug reports or feature requests they can all go in there.

You can also check out that thread for details of how you can help.

"This game made Billy gay."

Proteus' tips of poo poo you shouldn't do:

1) For the love of God, don't talk about other LPs in your LP unless you're deliberately doing some sort of meta-bullshit. And don't do that either. When we made the joke, it wasn't that funny, and when you make the joke, it's even less so. Just don't do this ever. (Appendum: This also applies to if you're doing an LP someone else has already done. It's a good idea to mention why you're redoing it in the OP, but after that, try not to mention that person's LP again, and for God's sake don't steal their jokes because that's just being a loving hack)

2) If your friend is an unfunny retard, we don't want him in your LP. I don't care how good of friends you are or if he was the one who brought you paper towels when the other kids at school flushed your head down the toilet or whatever. If he sucks, he's gotta go. This poo poo is serious, dawg.

3) Do not make me download your video. By this I mean I am not going to go to Rapidshare or Filefront and download the AVI just so I can watch your video. You are not that good. If you want to offer that as an option, great. If it's the only way you're offering it, go away.

4) If you're bored playing it, we're going to be bored watching it, so don't leave it in the video. Editing videos isn't difficult. You can do it in Camtasia in all of about five seconds. Chop out you backtracking because you got lost or whatever. You're not robbing us of valuable gameplay, trust me.

5) Don't talk over cutscenes. If you were actually more interesting than the game, you'd have your own radio show somewhere. (Appendum: Also, don't read out text on the screen. If you're already filming the video, it's trivial to take a screenshot of the text and post it in the thread. Nobody wants to sit there and listen to your nasally voice read some text that the rest of us already finished reading a minute ago. Either put it in the thread if it's really long or if you think we won't be able to read it, or shut the gently caress up and leave it on the screen long enough for us to read. Both options are fine. Reading the poo poo out loud isn't.)

6) Do not roleplay the characters. And for God's sake, if you're doing a video LP, DO NOT ROLEPLAY THE loving CHARACTERS

7) Stop thinking you can do that stream of consciousness rambling commentary where you say whatever comes to mind and it ends up coming out really disjointed and it ends up being just whatever random thought comes to your head in a neverending stream of diarrhea spewing out of your mouth and into the microphone and completely overshadowing whatever game you're trying to play when nobody is actually interested in whatever retard Asperger's thought is flying through your head at the moment but you can't stop talking and you feel like you have to fill every single second of the dead air with your droning incessantly obnoxious nasally voice and it just goes on and on until the video ends and you suddenly realize that you've been talking into the microphone for 18 minutes after the video ended and that's when it's time to go see a psychiatrist. So anyway, yeah, don't be that guy.

8) Don't film yourself and put yourself in your LPs (as in, editing videos of yourself into your LP). That's attention whoring of the worst kind, it's rarely ever funny, and it really gives off a sad vibe. This doesn't come up very much but every time I see it I kinda cringe.

8a) I realize I kinda focused on VLPs in this one and missed a bigger, more common issue, and that's writing yourself into SSLPs. Don't. Nobody wants to read fan-fiction about how you became a master Pokemon trainer, or how you stopped Sephiroth at the last second and saved Aeris from dying, or whatever. Even if you think you're disgusing it well, you're not. We can tell. It's loving awful. Don't. Don't don't don't don't don't. Just don't. I'm not saying don't let your personality shine through in your writing. That's fine. But don't thinly disguise yourself as the main character. There's a reason there's a passionate undying hatred for fan-fiction here.

9) Don't do a virgin runthrough. Now, I realize for most of you that would preclude you from doing any LPs at all, but what I mean is, play through the game at least once, to completion, before trying to LP it. Yes, some people have done blind runs of games (myself included), but I can't think of a single person who has done it and had it not be a piece of poo poo unless they've had a couple of normal LPs underneath their belt beforehand.

10) Don't exaggerate your emotions. If something is scary, it's not "HOLY poo poo I JUST PEED MY PANTS!" scary. If a game is bad, it's not "OH MY loving GOD THE WORST GAME EVER". If you can't express emotion or opinion without making it ridiculously exaggerated, I dunno, maybe you should work on learning how to act like a normal human being before you tackle this whole LP thing.

11) Don't have more than three people in your LP. It just doesn't work. Three people is about the most people you can reasonably have in your video without running into an unintelligible mess of people talking over each other and about five of these other tips being broken unintentionally. Plus, I'm not entirely sure there's even three entertaining people in this forum total.

12) If you just registered your account, don't post an LP immediately. Unless it's absolutely spectacular, you're going to get endless amounts of poo poo. I hate to imply that I support reg date elitism, because I don't, but the fact of the matter is that we get a pathetically large number of new posters here who just register an account for Internet FAME AND LP GLORY, and that's not why you should be making an LP. If it is, I don't even know what in the gently caress to say to you (actually, if you're reading this, I probably don't have to say anything to you, because the people who do this stupid loving poo poo typically don't read the Sandcastle).

12.5) Along the same lines, don't crosspost LPs from other forums. If you want us to check out an LP that you've already done somewhere else, link to it in here (by "in here" I mean this thread). Don't make a thread where you basically just rehash something you've already done. First of all, you're wasting your time, and second of all, this forum tends to be a lot harsher than wherever you posted it originally (I say that with a high degree of certainty no matter what other site you posted your LP on), so just because letsplayforum.com or whatever thought it was good doesn't mean we will. It also doesn't mean we won't, but point is, use the Sandcastle first. By doing this, you'll get constructive criticism on what works and what doesn't. If you just mash the post thread button, all you're going to get is ridicule.

13) Don't do some sort of mega popular hugely successful well-reviewed and well-loved game as your first LP. There's a lot of people who look at the archive and say "Hey, nobody's done Bioshock (or Fallout 3, or insert some other popular game here)? I should do that!!!!!" Hold up there, slick. There's a reason nobody's done it yet. Big-name games require a level of detail, effort, and knowledge that you're probably not going to know if you're willing to put into your LP yet. The reason these games haven't been done is because nobody wants to be the guy to gently caress it up. And I don't think you do either. So cut your teeth on something else, and then maybe after you get a couple of these under your belt you'll be the man to tackle Fallout 3 or whatever.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

It was decided this was probably a bad idea since it would end up with one even more massive and cluttered thread to scare off people who need to check it.

It was also had a confusing existence. All the tech stuff usually went to the Tech Support Fort, and questions about making an LP all went to the sandcastle since people actually read it (plus if you made a test post taking it to another thread would be pretty stupid). If all the tech was in one thread, and the mechanics in another, what was there left to ask in How To...

Seriously.

Do we really have to hold peoples hands to make LPs? The only advice you can give to a new hopeful LPer is to lurk. Watch what works and what doesn't work, and then practice and put up for criticism. If it doesn't work out, iron things out and come back, or try something else, or just lurk forever if you're a terribly unfunny shitbag (or become a youtube LPer instead).

If we could host the How To thread off site like discussed in the last thread and put it in the op, that would be dandy. There are several things that are not covered in the TSF or anywhere else, for that matter. I suppose baldurk could just cram it all in the OP, but again that brings up the searchability issue.

Do you still wanna own the latter thread, Maxwell? If so, and if you can write up an OP, I can do the sticky crap. (Or you can edit the TSF and I can retitle if necessary, whatever.)

DO AN EXILE SSLP.

loving DO IT.

I grew up on those games.

They're cursed. There have been at least two Avernum LPs and one Exile LP and all have been abandoned. I'd love to see someone else give it a try and actually finish one, though.

You cannot hope to defeat Egbert in a prank-off. He is simply the best there is.

I'd read it. But Thuryl's right, they're tough games to keep interesting if you aren't playing them yourself.

Any idea on how you'd go about it?

If you won't try to find coherence in the world, have the courtesy of becoming apathetic.

Looking through the posts in How to Make a Let's Play, it's actually already pretty nicely separated - assuming the TOC in the OP is up to date, then everything under "general" should probably be moved in here, and all the other links should be moved into the Tech Support Fort.

I could add those links into the OP/second post, but I think it'd be better if they were reposted somewhere in here so that everyone can read it even when How to Make a Let's Play drops into the archives.

Not all of the posts in there are worth keeping though, some are outdated like the one about Video Hosts - it has stage6 and vimeo, and misses viddler and gamevee. I figure that's best for TSF.

The way I see it, there are two kinds of questions people are going to have. A: How do I make my LP better and B: how do I do this crap at all. Maybe thats how the threads should be set up. That sounds good to me.

I'll post in the thread, but I'm clearly quite terrible at editing an OP to keep it up to date. Maybe Static Fiend could do the honors?

(Shrug.) I am also fine with this.

Huh?

Alright, since I never got a reply to my idea, I'll presume a stampede of approval for my Giants LP idea.

I've recorded the first Mecc level with some post commentary here on Viddler (GameVee hates me with an unholy passion for some reason with this video), can I get some feedback, technical or otherwise?

(Also the intro here on Viddler and GameVee)

More detailed test post to come if all is well.
