Exactly. These think tanks aren't just marketing firms, they're the places where the future of conservative thought is created. We have no equivalent.

Obviously I'm not saying we should fund a media blitz, I'm saying we should use part of our resources to develop liberal thought and progressive politics in America. We ignore that because "we don't want to be like them" and it's hurting us.
We can learn a lot from our enemies, and we need to reconcile it with our own ideals so we can use it for "good" and not "evil".

I think Hollywood has long missed the point of the novel. It is less a monster story than it is a treatise on ethics. This is why the monster doesn’t even need a name—because it is just an outgrowth of the ethical, moral and spiritual failure of Dr. Frankenstein.

In the modern world, the irony of this is staggering. This is because the scientist and physician who is ethical, moral and spiritual is today the outcast, the renegade. The amorality of Dr. Frankenstein is the norm. His research would be sponsored by the US government and several biomedical corporations.

Today, scientists and medical researchers actively seek out ethical barriers to violate. What in his day would have properly made Frankenstein an outcast would today earn him a Nobel prize, numerous patents for “reanimation of cadavers into soulless humanoids”, and the arguments would be cast in whether the monster itself should be patentable, and could it be freely used in experiments like a lab animal.

His peers would be deeply offended at anyone who objected to the grotesqueness, the unnatural inhumanity of his creations, as “anti-scientific”. Legislation would be proposed that after death, people should no longer have legal possession of their own bodies, as they are too valuable for scientific research into reanimation.

George Bush's legacy and fight endures in the Mid East, despite, and in spite of Obama, and THAT is Obama's real dielma. It was George Bush's policy of engagement and support of liberty that has led to the people of Iran seeing the measure of freedom now established on both sides of them in Iraq and Afghjanistan...and desiring it for themselves.

Obama cannot possibly go too far in recognizing that, or he absolutely repudiates himself and his entire foreign policy.

NAACP Rallies for Cop Killer on Death Row (Troy Davis)
Sidenote on this guy:

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the refusal of U.S. courts to examine the innocence evidence, and has organized rallies and letter-writing campaigns to persuade the Georgia and Federal courts to grant Davis a new trial or an evidentiary hearing.[2] Many prominent politicians and leaders, including President Jimmy Carter,[8] Pope Benedict XVI,[9] Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu,[9] Presidential candidate Bob Barr,[9] and former FBI Director and judge William S. IMHO, most liberals are racists much more so than conservatives. Liberals use the race card every chance they get and they play it to foster racism and hatred and violence. In fact, I think among liberals you will find all manner of degenerates and racists not limited to just minority racism but also anti-Semitism against Jews as well. Liberals are mostly the most intolerant, hateful, angry, hypocritical and bullying people on the face of this planet.
I was getting angry but then I realized it was just his humble opinion.

quote:

Liberal DemocRats ENABLE crime by DISARMING the law abiding and then taxing them to appease the ‘special victim’ classes.... if you were to subtract black crime from the US crime statistics, we’d be the most law-abiding nation on the planet by quite a margin. Even the Europeans would look bad in comparison.
This doesn't sound true anyway, but it reminded me of some racism in people who KNOW they're not racist. I was on another forum and people were knocking the US for low standards of living. Someone pointed out that actually, if you don't count the minorities, the US is on par with Europe. I like this argument of "if you don't consider Americans with a low standard of living and high crime rate, the USA has a low crime rate and high standard of living".

quote:

Agreed. Savannah is the favorite weekend getaway place for my wife and me. We haven't been there since the election, but I am wondering if the attitude of the black population there is similar to that of those of the black community here. There is now an air of hostility, even in my small, quiet southern town.

20 years in the Army made me indifferent to someone's race, but I find my attitude changing in response to the rude and hostile behavior that I now encounter on a daily basis.

I guess we will wait until our NH CCW permits come in before we visit Savannah again. (GA and SC do not recognize each other's permits.)
This might be my favorite, in its Hitchcockian suggestion of racist murder under a rather tame veneer.

The issue isn't really about getting Freepers to change sides. The people that are posting on these sites about how Michelle Obama is an ape or Obama is going to take your gun and make you watch while he rapes your daughter are a lost cause, and the best we can do is hope that they fail to kill anyone when their paranoid fantasies erupt into actual violence.

The problem is that there thousands, millions, or much more reasonable people who aren't filled with hate and rage and bitterness, but are misguided by the sheer volume of right-wing repetition in the media. Someone who has enough motive and inclination to come home and turn on the news is still going to get an overwhelmingly rightist view of the world, because that's what on CNN and Fox and everywhere. They don't think that you should die if you can't afford healthcare, they've just been told over and over that socialized medicine will hurt everyone, cost more, and prevent them getting treatment - and both American education and political discourse is too shallow for them to even know what 'Socialism' actually means.

The media echo that the right wing has created has been a terrible thing for American politics - and to both sides, because not only does it shift the dialogue away from the liberal position, but the party it has created bears almost no resemblance to actual 'conservative' values - like reduced spending, smaller government, etc. You have this horrendous bloated monster that is essentially powered by fear and jingoism, and crushes debate and argument with sheer volume.

I don't want a left-wing media chamber, and I think it's critical to practice progressive politics and policy and not turn our attention to just fighting the voice war. But at the same time we have to do serious work on changing the dialogue.

And when I say 'we' I mean 'you' because it's not my country and I'm too tired to help clean up your mess.

There's no one I'd rather be than me.

quote:

Legislation would be proposed that after death, people should no longer have legal possession of their own bodies, as they are too valuable for scientific research into reanimation.

you should do a spotlight on bobby post with the actual quotes and stuff, times like these i miss the his44 threads - while general wingnuttery is funny, freerepublic has so many users that you don't get to see the personality of any of them really shine through and you can't get a sense of what they're like, which makes things infinitely funnier imo

i made a quick-and-dirty perl script to pull out his posts separately and look at them; maybe i'll tweak it a bit for focusing on specific freep posters

Oh, and by the way, I wasn't originally going to post this here, but then I saw this:

A lot of stuff in this thread makes me shake my head and think "How can people like this actually be out there?"

This is the first post in this thread that has made me physically sick.
