Trabisnikof posted:The fact of the matter is, there's very little truly radical liberal thought occurring. Obviously I'm not saying we should fund a media blitz, I'm saying we should use part of our resources to develop liberal thought and progressive politics in America. We ignore that because "we don't want to be like them" and it's hurting us. We can learn a lot from our enemies, and we need to reconcile it with our own ideals so we can use it for "good" and not "evil".

NAACP Rallies for Cop Killer on Death Row (Troy Davis) Sidenote on this guy: wikipedia posted:Amnesty International has strongly condemned the refusal of U.S. courts to examine the innocence evidence, and has organized rallies and letter-writing campaigns to persuade the Georgia and Federal courts to grant Davis a new trial or an evidentiary hearing.[2] Many prominent politicians and leaders, including President Jimmy Carter,[8] Pope Benedict XVI,[9] Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu,[9] Presidential candidate Bob Barr,[9] and former FBI Director and judge William S. Fake Edit: gently caress these guys so hard, the Troy Davis case is a trainwreck and it's obvious to anyone who takes two minutes. shotgunbadger posted:See read that very last quote, these are people who totally think that it's ok to say 'pay for healthcare or die, not my problem!' and have no issue with that, does anyone really think we can 'convert' them? The issue isn't really about getting Freepers to change sides. The people that are posting on these sites about how Michelle Obama is an ape or Obama is going to take your gun and make you watch while he rapes your daughter are a lost cause, and the best we can do is hope that they fail to kill anyone when their paranoid fantasies erupt into actual violence. The problem is that there thousands, millions, or much more reasonable people who aren't filled with hate and rage and bitterness, but are misguided by the sheer volume of right-wing repetition in the media. Someone who has enough motive and inclination to come home and turn on the news is still going to get an overwhelmingly rightist view of the world, because that's what on CNN and Fox and everywhere. They don't think that you should die if you can't afford healthcare, they've just been told over and over that socialized medicine will hurt everyone, cost more, and prevent them getting treatment - and both American education and political discourse is too shallow for them to even know what 'Socialism' actually means. The media echo that the right wing has created has been a terrible thing for American politics - and to both sides, because not only does it shift the dialogue away from the liberal position, but the party it has created bears almost no resemblance to actual 'conservative' values - like reduced spending, smaller government, etc. You have this horrendous bloated monster that is essentially powered by fear and jingoism, and crushes debate and argument with sheer volume. I don't want a left-wing media chamber, and I think it's critical to practice progressive politics and policy and not turn our attention to just fighting the voice war. But at the same time we have to do serious work on changing the dialogue. And when I say 'we' I mean 'you' because it's not my country and I'm too tired to help clean up your mess.

Controlling the message (note that says message and not messangers) is what you should strive for, but that is another thread where anyone who hasn't read Don't Think of an Elephant would be banned from posting. This isn't a thread about controlling the message. This isn't a thread about converting Freepers. This is a thread about mocking them. This is a thread about recognizing their arguments, even their over the top dumb ones. This is a thread about getting motivated for your team because the other team is filled with horrible people. This thread is about making sure YOU don't sound as stupid as these guys. You aren't going to cure these people, they have to do it themselves. Some of them you'd be able to reach via various means, but this isn't about those means, and none of those means are posting on their message boards. Mostly, this thread is a combination of pointing and laughing, and slamming your head against the desk because someone actually believes these things. So have fun and buy a padded desk.

A few years ago a white debutante that my mother knew through her parents got shot in a "good" part of town and died a week later, and instantly the newspapers and everyone I knew were talking about how "crime had gotten out of control." Even though there had been plenty of homicides in Savannah that year and there's always been a lot of crime here.

other things i've learned from that bobby "TCBE" guy's posts: - the best response to "once you go black, you never go back" is "we don't WANT 'em back!" - muslims are "the planet’s cancer.....and I say America should be the big chemo machine and eradicate this islam disease, completely, once and for all" [ellipsis in original] - an appliance dolly is good for carting around the enormous quantities of ammo you buy at gun shows now that obama is president - "1965 was the greatest year for marvel comics" - at the bars he hung out at in the 70s, everyone would stop snorting coke and watch the TV when saturday night live was on because it was funny back then - he's had a concealed carry permit for 31 years - obama's waiting around until the calls for him to release his birth certificate reach a deafening roar (perhaps with limbaugh and beck's help), and then he'll release the fakes he's got prepared - bill clinton and george h.w. bush worked together in the 80s to use the mena airport in arkansas for drug smuggling - he keeps repeating the fantasy of chaining people to trees and roasting them with blowtorches - he stopped watching sean hannity because hannity wouldn't insist on a straight answer from liberals on whether they'd approve torture in the famous "ticking time bomb" scenario - regarding michelle obama: "the lovely and gracious Laura had/has more class in her pinky finger than that fat assed muslim woman has in her entire full figured wideload body." - he's always drinking crown royal reserve whiskey, but back in the day he smoked weed while watching rocky and bullwinkle and george of the jungle - "I’d be banned quickly if I typed out what I truly feel about cnn and what I would like to see happen to their whole anti-American opperation."
