Just as a weird point: I have never had problems with Checkout.

I have had bizarre, transient eBay and PayPal problems though.

As far as Gmail goes, if you use gmail and multiple addresses, Firefox and Gmail Manager make Gmail so much more useful. And Firefox never has those weird eBay and Paypal problems.

SO I have taken to just having ebay, Paypal and GMail open in Firefox all the time, along with the two or three commercial sites, and the banking sites that hate Opera.

Still waiting for the Opera PC feature of forcing everything to open as tabs to make it to the Mac though. I love that on the PC, and I hate it on the Mac. Writing six different letters from my primary Gmail account is a breeze on the PC, and hard/impossible on the Mac, since GMail spawns six new windows on the Opera Mac.

What I meant about gmail is not the in-mail double spacing (if that's what you meant). It's the fact that on a Mac you can not open ten tabs with new "Compose Mail" spaces open. On Opera on a PC you can.

It's just a Tab thing. On a Mac you can spawn ten windows to compose gmail in. On a PC you can spawn ten tabs to do the same thing.

It's really just a niggle.

Tip I discoverd by accident just now:

I always type g (whatever I am searching for) to pop up a google search.

I mis-typed and wrote h (whatever I was searching for) and Opera popped up a window displaying a search for those terms in my history.

Woot.

I've been unable to do this (for example new tab, g somethingawful) for about a month now, and think it may be tied to a recent Leopard update. I'm using 10.5.6. It definitely worked before, but now this action causes an instant crash almost constantly.

Opera has several lists which it has apparently set no upper limit on. Favicons are the one I had the most trouble with. When they get too long Opera just bogs or crashes.

Figure out where that auto complete list (or whatever you call that thing) is stored and kill it.

I wish Opera would have a "get rid of all the accumulated crap that is slowing my Opera down" button to click. Leave my bookmarks, toolbars, and searches and clean the rest out. Or at least put some uppper cacp on the number of whatevers it is trying to remember.

As lame and stupid as I know it is to feel defensive over computer software, with the upcoming release of Safari 4, I feel bad for Opera. Safari 4 has a number of new features that came directly from Opera, namely a Speed Dial knockoff and the searching-history-and-page-text-when-typing-in-the-URL-bar thing. The same is true for a lot of Firefox's and Chrome's new features, too.

Not that I have anything against copying features, because that's what people do when someone creates a cool, new feature. But the big thing I feel bad about is that rarely does anyone acknowledge Opera. Opera was the originator of almost every single major feature put in a web browser, including tabs, pop-up blocking, speed dial, search engine fields, in-page text searches, mouse gestures, and probably oodles more I'm forgetting. But do they ever get credit? Almost never.

Hell, other than Chrome's every-tab-is-a-process thing, can anyone name a single major feature in any of the other browsers that didn't originally come from Opera? (Excluding of course features that are necessary for something to be a browser at all, like HTML rendering.)

And I'm done. Sorry for being a stupid internet nerd. :shobon:

They chose a business model (pay or ad-supported) at a bad time.

And they still have compatibility problems.

I use it and love it. But I could never in good conscience recommend Opera to someone. (Same with Macs, as well). Compatibility trumps all for people who do not want to think about the tool itself.

For the nerd, it's not nerdy enough. It does not have extensions, and it is not Open Source.

For the don't want to think about it person, it requires too much fiddling. (Example: my transient and ongoing eBay and PayPal problems.)

I think OGG Vorbis is something much better to feel bad about not being known.

(Opera on the Mac)

Anyone have any tips on how to make Opera's file download part more useful? (

I would love to be able to
1. rearrange the order of files to be downloaded.
2. Limit the number of simultaneous downloads (Without having to globally limit connections which tends to make browsing all screwy)

In terms of the download order, simple drag and drop is not getting it done, at least as far as I can tell. I can't figure out to make it sort by queue order, (or even show queue order for that matter.)

If Opera's download manager is a lost cause, then which download manager plays nice with Opera in terms of inheriting cookies and downloads?

Two things that if deleted tend to rescue me from some crashiness:
1. Stop the Sycn, and delete the in-process bookmarks lists. It seems like they get corrupted and hang and hang and hang.

2. Delete the favicon folders. They are tiny, but somtimes Opera will put many thousands of files in one folder, which causes crashiness.

I will continue to be mystified, unless Firefox somehow keeps old deleted bookmarks somehow.

It does in fact do just that.. Firefox 3.0 and above use a completely different bookmarks database, but they leave the old bookmarks file in place. And the old one (most likely) is the one that Opera looked for, and read from.

I was trying to figure out why my bookmarks file had not been updated in Firefox since Mar 2008 or some such thing, and just read all about that.

I am trying to downgrade to 9.64 and I am learning more than I want to about where different browsers store their bookmark files, and whatnot.

What I am not learning is why everyone (Opera included) wants to keep changing their bookmarks file format. Especially Opera (which has a small installed base) should really hesitate to change where they store their bookmark file, and the format of the file.

I am having absolutely no luck with Opera 10 and a big part of my frustration is that since they changed their bookmark file format and location, LaunchBar (Like Launchy but for Macs) does not know how to parse the bookmark file which means in order to use it I have to keep exporting a html copy of the bookmark file.

I would just like to say that my "Opera cannot print" probably has at least become completely random, rather than absolutely guaranteed.

After installing the CUPS-PDF driver (which prints straight to PDF without having to do any save as PDF stuff), I am now able to get to the print dialog box about 50% of the time.

About 50% of the time it crashes from there but....

This is true with a completely new blank user, too.

IIRC, at one time Opera used QuickTime to render pages. Is this still the case? COuld I be hanging due to a QT update? Is no one else having these problems at all?

Well it's gotta be something with that PDF printer, obviously. Does this happen in FF as well as Opera? Do you have permissions sorted and all that? Did you read the README included with the printer? What distro are you running? Any alpha/beta builds or stable?

Actually the problem was 100% of the time before I installed the CUPS-PDF printer. I think it is a particular problem to the HP printer (Laser Jet 1012), at least in part. But even when I delete the printer, it is an on again off again thing, except that it is most of the time. The problems first exposed itself when I upgraded a bunch of OS stuff and Opera to 10.0 at the same time. I though it was Opera 10.0, but when my hard drive died. I started upgrading from an old backup, and left Opera at 9.63 but upgraded the Mac OS, and that brought the problem back. So it is not Opera 10.0, but rather some sort of oddball interaction between the 10.5.8 upgrades and Opera.

I have tried everything but an actual clean system install: Used AppTrap to delete the program and the related info, made a new user just to make sure it was clean, etc.

In a sense it is a sign of just how much I love Opera that I am doing without printing from the browser, but it is now getting in the way of research. Firefox/Safari/iCab have no problems printing...

At this point the hope is that upgrading to 10.6 fixes it, but that's gotta wait a bit.

From the Opera forums, it seems I am the only person reporting the problem. But then again the number of Mac users running Opera is small to begin with, so ....

Edit: (Rube Goldberg method)
1. Create new account on computer.
2. Synchronize with Opera Link on New account.
3. Erase all bookmarks Notes and Speed Dials on local computer.
4. Synchronize with Opera Link

(It seems like there should be a more direct method to do this, but...)

I just tried it on my laptop, that still runs Opera 10.10 - no problems with Youtube, so I guess we can chalk it up to another issue with 10.50?

YouTube is broken (but getting better) on older versions of Opera (I use 9.6.4). It is intermittently broken Safari on the Mac, though it has gotten dramatically better on Safari in the couple of days, and somewhat better on Opera 9.64.

The YouTube problem is on 'their end', though they are not acknowledging the problem exists AFAICT. Refreshing repeatedly and getting it to work part of the time seems to show that the problem is randomly repeatable, which is almost always a 'their end' problem IME. Also the fact that Safari was broken, and is becoming less so tends to support the 'their end' idea. I don't generally update working programs so I know it is nothing to do anything I have done, since I have done nothing. I'll bet that the problem was fixed on their end for browsers in the order of their marketshare. The fact is that Firefox starting working again soon after the problem started, Safari started working again a little later, and Opera is not fixed yet, but it is getting better.

Googling for YouTube problems seems to not give good results at all :tinfoil:. It probably means that they fixed their end in the order of brpwser marketshare, but it ends up feeling like Google is hiding the problem. They certainly don't seem to be out there admitting their mistake regardless.

And Adobe has to be pissed at all the people redownloading their already-up-to-date Flash. It's almost like Apple planned the whole thing.

EDIT: the fact that the Vevo section never stopped working is more evidence of the 'their end' nature of the problem.

I am still about about a 10% success rate on Opera 9.64 with YouTube. I must be in that vanishingly small demographic: Old version of Opera on a Mac. I wonder if it will ever work for me again.

YouTube has seemingly fixed itself even for people like me (Opera 9.64, Mac).

Why are you still using 9.x?

10.x Opera breaks the controller on QuickTime movies, which means I cannot download them.
