The whole point of toys and games is for them to be fun, so let's see what happens when we remove whatever makes them fun, interesting, or challenging, and make them boring, routine, listless, and futile instead.

Going from settlement to settlement on a near-featureless map is much more immersive than actually following an irradiated river looking for a bridge into the nuked-out ruins of Washington D.C. I know for sure going from one well-populated settlement to another, with the occasional dungeon or gecko encounter, gave me much more of a sense of loss and devastation than exploring the overworld and stumbling upon frightful, twisted ruins of civilization.
