As an infiltrator you'll be relying on your pistol a TON. Which is fine because once you have it all the way maxed out you can spam marksman almost nonstop and you do crazy enormous amounts of damage with the high end pistols. Sniper rifles will become more stable as you level the skill for them and/or add mods that improve accuracy/stability(?). Check to make sure you have points into their use as well, as you may be proficient in it (which will let you use the scope), but will not make you especially accurate with it.

yeah, seconding this. I played through ME1 with an infiltrator and I'm continuing on with that same character in ME2. Stick with the pistol for the early parts of the game. The sniper rifle is basically useless until you get a few ranks in it and add some accuracy mods to it.

That inability to aim that you're experiencing is basically ME1's version of the "scope weave" that every FPS in the last 8 years or so has incorporated to make sniper rifles need a bit of timing and dexterity to use, rather than being one shot fingers of god. Upgrade it via skills, mods, and better rifles and that weave basically goes away. It's never going to be your 100% go to weapon, though, but it will be something you will switch to frequently.

Pistols aren't lovely guns in that game, though, they can own the poo poo out of things. They're a lot more accurate at range than assault rifles and shotguns and fire fast enough that you can lay a few enemies on their asses before they overheat.

As a vanguard in ME1 I used my pistol more than any other weapon. With a few points and decent mods, pistols are absolutely amazing.

They own in ME2 though, at least for Infiltrators. No more scope weave and you get time slowdown while scoped.

Yeah, I maxxed out my pistol skill as a vanguard and basically used it like an assault rifle. This was particularly effective after someone was lifted or thrown and you could just pump rounds into their floating/leveled body.

The shotgun basically became a grenade launcher, being whipped out for carnage but not for a whole lot else unless there were a ton of weak enemies at close range, such as on Feros with the plant-zombies.

Unfortunately it doesn't get much better. There is a piece of armor that gives you a little bit more ammo stowage but not much. If you're using assault rifles the best bet is to get the machinegun when you get a chance. I've pretty much never run out of ammo with it.

Ammo pickups are really plentiful though, I suspect the designers wanted to encourage players to move around more, even if it's just to retrieve ammo.

I'm an Infiltrator on this playthrough so I can't use assault rifles. I think I'm pretty good with the sniper rifle, it's just a very minor annoyance to constantly have to hunt for ammo and switch between weapons because I'm running low and may need to use the sniper rifle later in the level. It's not that I run out, it's that I'm constantly on the verge of running out or feel like I am.

My weapon preference is sniper rifle [10 round limit, 15? with the Incisor collector's edition rifle but it shoots 3 rounds with each pull] -> pistol [24 rounds] -> then machine pistol/smg and the rocket launcher for mechs and mobs of enemies.

I've yet to see more than 15 enemies at a time or needed more than one shot per enemy so I really don't see a problem with the sniper rifle's ammo limitations. On harder difficulties I guess?

Maybe I'm missing the ammo drops? I always look for them after combat but I hardly ever get all the ammo back after a fight. That and some of the enemies with ridiculous barriers take more ammo and many times I've shot at a head peeking out behind some cover only for it to hit some invisible extension of the cover.

Anyway, it's not some big deal I'm trying to make an issue about. I absolutely love the game so far, it's just one of those "I'd like it if ..." thoughts.

It's disappointing that the scope weave won't be able to be gotten rid of completely, and that as a sniper the sniper rifle isn't going to wind up being the gun I use most - but just hearing that the game should quickly devolve into easier firefights just by relying on the pistol early game I've decided to give it one more shot.

It is a beautifully rendered game and I'd hate to mail it back without so much as getting a single achievement from it.

I played Mass Effect on the 360 and really, it's no problem. The only difficulty you should ever have is if you walk into boss fights with retarded load outs ( like I did ). Everything else is piss easy, with the exception of the absolutely stupidly annoying fight at the end and it's lack of loving checkpoints.

There are single missions in Saint's Row 1 and 2 that are harder than the entirety of Mass Effect 1. Whoever thought up that airport raid mission in Saint's Row 1 is loving insane. It's the one thing I've ever given up on a game that wasn't due to a glitch or a bug.

The ammo thing gets a lot better in ME2 as you get better weapons. If you want to get an even better sniper rifle than the Incisor fairly early on go get the Assassin on your team ASAP - you pick up a rapid fire, large capacity sniper rifle in the mission to get him that absolutely rapes and has enough ammo that waiting on drops isn't an issue

I find I tend to use my sniper rifle most of the time, then when I run low on ammo I use my SMG to rip down shields and then my heavy pistol to gut people with no shields. Heavy weapons, of course, are for groups and mechs.

Also, as far as the ammo drop thing goes - make SURE that when you're looking for more ammo you have all your guns reloaded. The amount of ammo you can carry is just you "extra mags" for lack of a better term. As an example, the Incisor sniper rifle has a 15 round capacity in the gun with an extra 30 rounds in outside storage. If you run it totally empty you will pick up the extra 30 rounds and then stop grabbing extra ammo. First time you go to reload it that "extra" 30 roiunds goes down to 15 and your reserves are half depleted. If you reload while picking up the extra ammo, though, you can carry 30 + 15 for a total of 45 rounds.

Yeah, they track the rounds in the gun as well as what's in your bag. Kind of like how if you have two mag pouches on your kit for an AR you should probably carry another 30 in the gun itself. I thought that was kind of cool when I noticed it.

I'd actually planned on playing some Star Trek Online this weekend, but the typical new MMO teething problems meant that their servers were down for a good chunk of the weekend. In lieu of that, I've been playing ME2. Good fun. It'll probably get me to pick up the PC version of ME1 to run through again next time Steam has it on sale. I'm especially digging the mid-cutscene interrupts.

I'm having a lot of fun with ME2 as an adept. I imported my ME1 vanguard but chose adept because the charge power seemed too gimmicky. I am now having a ton of fun juggling guys in the air and blasting them with the machine pistol. Only problem I have is with shielded and armored dudes, who I have to just plink at with the machine pistol. Any way to bypass this annoyance?

There is never any way to get Wrex on your team

The best is when you get to the end of the conversations with Jacob and then whenever you talk to him he's like "We good" followed by a tender yet manly bro-embrace. It's like Bioware felt like they had to remind you that yes, Jacob is a black character.

Not really. If he's dead his brother or cousin or someone takes his place as Big Chief of Kroganland. Like most choices from the first game it just effects dialogue.

edit: The most important thing about not having Wrex is that your Shepard has to live with the knowledge that he killed (or had his racist girlfriend kill) a totally rad dude. If you're willing to play the game knowing that then you are no friend of mine.
