Arma 2 is my new favorite game. We ran through a 9 man co-op mission today that was so tactilol and amazing. It ran for over an hour and I got 18 kills + the stuff I lased for the Harrier.

Plus it was on Expert, so no crosshairs and now map marker showing you where you are. Goons are terrible at orienteering in that game.

  • because of a very poor choice of time/setting for WW1, all the classic hallmarks of that war (and the western front) were fudged in anyway (no man's land, nasty static defenses, gas attacks, tanks). I crabbed about this plenty. Despite at least some lip service to Antietam (all of the maps are at least cursorily based on satellite data), WW1 is the least accurate historically.
  • Germans in WW1 wear a totally made up helmet. It resembles a 1918 Stahlhelm, 3-4 years too early, yet has a Pickelhaube spike. No, there is no good excuse for this and it still makes me angry. I went to bat over this issue and was basically ignored. I'm going to be constipated for three weeks just thinking about it.

That's all I can think of right now. My experience building this game, then the desire to be accurate about things lead me to milsurp in the first place, have greatly informed my current game design philosophy. I regret all historical inaccuracies because I believe you build a game like this for the people who know better and who will notice, not for the people who won't.

I'll address any other comments a bit later, I just got back from a roadtrip. Glad people are liking the game.

SP is surprisingly fun, especially since the SP in RtCW was so goddamn boring. It won't light your world on fire or anything, but at least it puts a lot of choices on the player, what with upgrading equipment and selecting missions and the like.

But I mostly play modern Wolf games for MP. I'll go give that a whirl real quick.

The trailer says it's semiauto, so I took it to mean your character is pulling that trigger real drat fast.

And honestly, I don't think people are going to mind too much about the inaccuracies. It's a game that lets you jump around in time and shoot Romans in the face with automatic weapons. I know that's why I'll be playing it, and not complaining because the soldiers in the WWI missions have the wrong color gaiters.

The sights on almost everything are dicked up too

Demo was pretty fun though, especially after you tire of your Henry rifle and murder a couple blue dudes to gank a scoped machinegun

Running ahead of everyone and coming face to face with a picket line while holding a machine gun put a smile on my face. Emptying the mag and watching them turn tail and run turned my smile into laughter.

I am with Pitch on the "explanation" for the inaccuracies.

One issue with Wolfenstein's Multiplayer is also that the entire team got axed right after it was released.

I'm still sticking with Wolf:ET because TrueCombat: Elite will always be my favorite MP game.

You can revive people, they're "unconscious" and you only have about 3-5sec to get to them.

Yeah we tried to make sure this made it into the game fiction at least a little bit, but I don't think it ever appears in any dialogue. But, you should feel good in discerning the secret reason for all these "inaccuracies"!

Oh yeah, that was the other thing. A lot of the guns were built long before I arrived and nobody really had a clear understanding, especially of how old timey open leaf type sights worked. So what would happen, and the G98 is probably the most egregious example, the appropriate geometry just wasn't there/just wasn't built with enough detail to be functional. What can you do. Glad you liked the demo, though.


I congratulate myself on being a big enough milsurp nerd now to realize most of the gross inaccuracies about the K98 in Wolfenstein, though. Not that they're trying for realism, but it's funny just how much the sights were exaggerated.

Yeah we hit on this about a third of the way through development. As originally specified, futuristic weapons were meted out very, very sparingly, but enough playtesting underscored the obvious: if you're a time traveler, you sure as hell better abuse technological advantages.
So no virtually all levels in the game are loosely structured in a way like the demo level: a significant amount of time with period weapons (which can still be upgraded, though), and then a lightning round where you bring down thunder from the sky. From the future.

We originally had a deep-set AI "cowardice" state but this proved problematic as they'd mostly just pick a random direction and take off, and get stuck on some obstacle or fence. It was more work, but provided better results to script most encounters to take behavior into account... in many, if not most firefights soldiers will have a logic operating that says if such and such percentage of you get decimated, then turn tail and run. Sometimes they'll regroup with other soldiers.
But yeah, long story short the more I worked on this game the more I tried to script behaviors like that. A random bunch of Confederates or Germans or what have you shouldn't have a complete deathwish when fighting in small groups.

Yeah I'm no longer with the team, so I wasn't a part of choosing/making the demo. There are as many WW1 levels as there are Civil War levels though, 6-7 apiece as I recall and not counting other time periods. But otto is right, they're not actually Soviets yet. The decision to do WW1 so early in the war was kind of baffling to me, but what can you do. Butterfly effect = you get western front trenches and gas attacks all the same.

Some things aren't meant to be public. Make your own assumptions.

Anyways.

The SP portion of Wolf is very fun, the upgrades and powers and the overall gameplay resembles Bioshock. Players can collect gold and other items which allow them to upgrade their weaponry or Veil powers. Theres nothing more fun then getting a fully upgraded K98 and bayoneting people and popping heads. The AI is pretty decent too. They take cover, shout commands and will attack when you reload, and flank when given the chance. Numerous side missions are also available. Bottom line is that the game is worth getting for Single Player alone.

MP is what it is, and its not Wolf ET. It resembles ETQW, which is only liked by certain types of gamers. That being said, its not good, but its not terrible either.

Do you just throw a medpack on them, or is there a prompt that tells you to "HOLD F TO REVIVE" or something? I have no way of finding out yet, since, as I said, I keep finding poo poo servers which either have no players or disconnect me in seconds.

I have a bet with a co-worker. He says COD MW2 will have a zombie mode; I on the other hand do not believe it will.

The two games are made by different studios. That was COD WOW's gimmick and I do not think IW would steal it from them.

I am mostly worried with reading an article that said "don't worry about the SP it will be just as long MW" (paraphrased). Just as long...I was thinking MW was way too short. Yay another game I can beat in a night.

$150 for a metal case, art book, bust of Soap, and not even gen 1 NVGs? Pass. The only thing the $80 "hardcore" model has going for it is a key to get CoD1 off of XBLA for free.
