God is just the start of your problems, neh?

Having taking programming courses that pushed towards art and art courses that stuck their toes in gaming, I think the greatest difficulty in joining the two fields is finding people who are willing to strive in both at the same time.

I can still recall a bunch of Smith College art majors being loving blown away by every simple programming idea I had under my belt. It's not that they were incapable of learning them, they simply hadn't had semester after semester saturated by coding. Unsurprisingly, the content of my work was less than inspiring by their standards...

Howdy!

I couldn't really get angry at the Cat and the Coup or the Graveyard, because they were both free (aside from the "F2P, pay to die n00b" thing with the Graveyard). As clumsy and half-baked as they were in their execution and ideas, I still find it encouraging whenever people try to broaden any medium. Their relatively lame works might pave the way for other things. I haven't played that Dear Esther game, but it sounds like it resonates with a surprising number of people, and is in some ways an offshoot of this kind of game-making ideology.

I'm so glad that game looks like it's gonna be awesome. I had a lot of trepidation when the early art got released.

Wasteland 2 is way over the $2,600,000 mark and headed home towards $2,700,000 with 38hrs remaining. In celebration, they posted a new update and a new tier:

quote:

We have less than 40 hours before our Kickstarter campaign ends, and what an incredible last month it has been. I am very anxious to start diverting all of my energies to production of the game itself. I am constantly asked about other projects I might consider, but for now it is Wasteland, Wasteland, Wasteland.

I hope you all had a chance to get a glimpse of the latest concept art from Andrée Wallin. Anyone who played the first Wasteland remembers the first time they ran into the Scorpitron, and this seemed the perfect enemy to prep up for the sequel. Scorpitron 2.0 is much more lethal than its predecessor.

Also we have spent some time thinking about and asking fans what we could put into the $30 tier to make it more interesting and to not disrupt what has already been offered. I think we have come up with an interesting list that may persuade a few people to upgrade. Based on your top requests and a forum poll we now offer the following as part of the $30 tier:

An extra digital download of the game in any format. Many people wanted to be able to get a Mac AND a PC version, or PC and Linux, or even an extra PC version for a friend. Now you can.

Access to a collection of exclusive Ranger portraits that will double the pool of character portraits you have to choose from at the start of the game when you are rolling up your Rangers. This unique image collection will not only give you more Ranger portraits, but more Ranger icons used to display your party location on the world map.

Access to a four-episode Video Development Blog that will show you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the design and development of Wasteland 2. Sit in on designer meetings and art-review meetings to see the process behind how the game is made. See interviews with Brian Fargo, Chris Avellone, Mike Stackpole, Alan Pavlish, and the rest of the development team as they explain to you what they are doing and why they are doing it.

A novella by Chris Avellone based on the universe of Wasteland.

Of course, all backers who are in at higher levels will also get all of these added items too.

Also we will have a live streaming party on Monday night (16th) from 10pm-12am EDT to celebrate the green light of production on the game. Our Kickstarter does not close until 5am the next morning, but we wanted to get some of our friends and family together to celebrate this little bit of history and share it with you. On attendance will be Nolan Bushnell the founder of Atari, Chris Avellone and a few other surprise guests. We will be answering questions received through live chat on the TwitchTV stream as well as from Facebook fans. I will tweet the URL Monday afternoon as well as post it here on Kickstarter.

Thanks again for all the support and faith....

Brian Fargo

Emphasis his.

This means that for my $65 contribution ($50 contribution + $15 foreign shipping; it's just $50 for Americans) I am now getting:

2 DRM-free digital copies which I can give away
1 large old-school boxed disc version
1 cloth map
1 old-school instruction manual
1 novella by Chris Avellone
1 novella by Mike Stackpole
1 (maybe 2?) complete digital soundtrack
1 (maybe 2?) complete digital concept art book
1 in-game Ranger portrait art expansion
1 in-game funny bonus skill
access to the video dev blog behind-the-scenes series

So for the price of a normal game I'm getting 3 copies of this one plus a bunch of nerdy swag.

Dear lord let the Kickstarter model pan out because this is how video game retail should be.

Out of some desire to remain vaaaaaaguely impartial instead of just BALLS TO THE WALL FULL SHILL MODE, I cannot tell you to do that because I am pretty clearly biased.

But you could buy Wasteland 2 for $15 and then buy Diablo 3, since we both know Blizzard is never gonna drop the loving price of Diablo 3 no matter how much poo poo they promise and then cut from the final game, whereas Brian Fargo is trying to make playing Wasteland 2 as cheap and enjoyable as possible like some kind of preemptive sale. You could have both things.

Hmmm. I think the reality is I'm not going to buy D3 at release. I'm actually hoping to get my friend to buy it for me so I'll play with him (this might make me a bad person). So maybe I'll just do Wasteland 2 now and then buy D3 6 months from now anyway.

What I'm really saying is this thread doesn't help me to not spend money on games and I love you all for that.

Still pretty neat but I don't know if I'll ever play Crysis 2. Is Crysis 2 worth it? Wasn't impressed by the mp demo and they consolized the poo poo out of it compared to #1.

Diablo 3 will be poo poo,

Wasteland 2 is an unknown quantity but has a greater than zero chance of not being poo poo,

therefore,

Wasteland 2.

Gtab's continued campaigning has convinced me W2 is worth $50 just because he keeps linking to things Brian Fargo says, and Brian Fargo keeps saying wonderful things.

Well since Crysis 1 was garbage and Crysis 2 is at least fun and runs well you can complain all you want about consolization but it's a better game.

When you people lynch me late next year-ish I'm gonna go out calling you all names so that I die as I lived.

Speaking of Wasteland 2 we're now sitting over $2,820,000 with 16 hours to go. We won't make the $3,000,000 "post-release mod tools a guarantee" point but we'll get close enough that maybe Mr. Fargo will manage to swing it anyway, and Wasteland 2 should be goddamn huge.

Tonight is the streamed nerd party at 1900-2100PT/2200-0000ET and the Kickstarter officially ends at 0500 tomorrow morning. Weird time, but whatever. Anyway that streamed party will probably be dumb but if you're a bored lonely nerd and/or you just want to hang on Fargo's every word in case he slips some details out, details will go up here on the Wasteland Portal sometime this evening.

I've posted this a half-dozen times before, but all I want is Far Cry (sans Trigens) meets Rogue Spear meets Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far

Give me giant open areas with some objectives like Far Cry, the ability to purchase units or tactical support like Close Combat, and the ability to plan the actions of those units like Rogue Spear, then play it in first person.

Playing Far Cry style missions where you can buy some bruiser squads of infantry to go capture a point using waypoints and checkpoints while you provide overwatch with a sniper rifle would be fun, but you could accomplish the exact same mission being a lone infiltrator with mortar support, and so on and so forth.

This would of course require a non-idiotic AI, which is something Crytek hasn't been good at.
