This loving place... I swear. Apparently, someone was loving around in the web filter configuration (which we don't actually use for web filtering, since we're a publicly funded University, which is a no-no) and blocked a whole ton of poo poo a few minutes ago (here, bbc.com, msnbc.com, etc etc etc). Apparently they realized their mistake because it came back pretty quickly. I've maintained for a while that it scares me working here, because the people who support a lot of important poo poo really don't know how that poo poo works. Just one more example.

We are an ISP that has moved to managed service and colocation, but we still have a bunch of residential dial up and DSL customers. These people just bought a Mac, and have no idea how to use it (obviously). They called back and he got them set up with email all the way to the end when they decided that they really wanted a new email address for the wife, and not to set up the husband's account. He walked thru it again with them. He is a patient man, I could not have done it.

We're upgrading our network backbone from a mix of 802.11b wireless and 100 megabit ethernet, to 1 gigabit ethernet all the way through, with one run being a 2 gigabit aggregated line so we can push backups across the building faster and not have backups in the same room as the main servers. We bought 5 brand new Dell PowerConnect switches and, since our cisco guy quit, outsourced the configuration to a local IT firm that's usually been really good to us. All I had to do was get the switches on the network, with remote access setup, so that the off-site guy could VPN in and do the aggregation and cisco poo poo. Easy enough right? I get all that done, the off-site guy begins work on configuring the poo poo I don't know how to do and a bit later I get an email. "I lost connection to the switch, could you take a look at it?" Turns out he setup link aggregation on the 2 ports I had already plugged in just to get the things on the network. I change the ports, and they reconnect. He jokes he should have checked which ports were in use before doing poo poo. Today I get another email. Turns out link aggregation doesn't work on those switches unless you run a firmware update, which he did, and now he can't connect again. I reboot the switch and also can't connect. Finally I jack into the serial port and watch the terminal as it boots... the firmware update soft bricked the switch. Fortunately we had a spare. I disconnect the broken one, log in to the spare, set it up so the off-site guy can get in and with the same ip/name as the broken switch. He gets it going and starts working on switch #2... which also gets soft bricked when he runs the firmware update. Awesome! Now we have 5 brand new switches, 2 of which won't boot. We now have to take them into his office so he can try and flash the firmware locally rather than over the VPN and get them working again. I guess that's what we get for buying Dell.

I love those people who tell you "I'll be back in the office after 2:30pm so can we tackle this IT issue on my computer after that time?" You then call them back at 2:50pm because you finally finished resolving an unrelated problem and the response is "I thought we agreed that you were going to call me AT 2:30PM, it's now 2:50PM and I have to attend a meeting at 3PM." First, you didn't tell me to call you at exactly 2:30pm. Second, you never told me you were going to be in a meeting at 3pm until this very moment. Fix your loving communication and stop being an rear end in a top hat.

Great ticket came it amazing way to start the day, paraphrased Subject: files won't open "All production file types won't open it has some file extension .aes (something about 1024 bit) and there is a message saying to pay X to get the data back. I ran some A/V scans but nothing the files still won't open! " After explaining they are pretty much hosed I get asked "Well can you hack it?" Yea, I will get right on that! oh I will need my pay for the next 1 million years it takes to decrypt 1024-bit AES encrypted files, up front please. Can't wait to explain why you need to update IIS\web facing windows server constantly, AV != IDS/IPS, ect ect.

When I worked at compUSA, I had a customer who had either never used a computer before in her life or was the best troll I've ever seen. I spent 30 minutes showing her how to do basic things on a computer. Then she left without buying anything. I'd like to think that I did a good thing by teaching someone the rudiments of modern technology but I remember just being kind of annoyed that I spent all that time and didn't even get a sale.
