All I had to do was sign up to work in the library. People don't bring laptops into the library, so no more tickets, and no phone at the desk so no more phone questions. I pretty much read SA all day and occasionally lend out a pair of scissors. This "job" would get eliminated from a corporate setting in half a second. Can I apply for this job?

I don't know where else to put this so here will do. I had the opposite of a bad ticket come in. The explanation of the (complicated) problem was long and detailed without going going off topic or including unnecessary details. Attached was a Powerpoint (I know, I hate PP but I'll let it slide.) It included annotated screenshots with red lines and circles indicating the problem areas and what was going wrong. Along with that was an explanation of what should be happening. This of course made the problem simple to fix and I complimented the user on his ticket when I got in touch with him. I'm still somewhat in shock since most of our tickets consist of "Thing broked".

12:04 Critical application broken, affecting 800+ users. 12:15 Email goes down. 12:28 Phone system melts, helpdesk cannot answer calls. I have no idea what the hell is happening but it's not my responsibility. I'm just glad the internet is still up, so I have something to keep me occupied. Hooray for being paid to surf SA. EDIT: In an unrelated matter, I just got a missed call from the helpdesk of the city public transport system. It was about a call I logged with them about being unable to log in or reset my pass for their accounting system. They were letting me know they were very busy right now and would get to my issue within the next 7 days or call me back. I logged the call 4 weeks ago and it was resolved 2 weeks ago. I don't know where else to ask this question but I follow this thread daily and you guys all know your stuff: I have a job interview on Thursday and the job agency place seems to have given the impression I know the basics of AD (I know nothing) how hard is it to learn the very basics of AD? Are there any good beginners websites? (I'm well aware I can Google this but if anyone knows of a good quality site, that would obviously be better.) P.S Good luck Dick Trauma.

Finished up my first week of my new job as a helpdesk/general admin. Something is terribly wrong.... My colleagues are all friendly, intelligent and competent, as is my supervisor. The building is brand new and well thought out. The server room is pristine and well built. The network is robust and the workflow/incident management system/process is logical. I have a decent amount of responsibility and access. The company is well known and has worldwide branches. The opportunity to get company paid for certs exists. The pay is decent, the company pays for drinks on the last Friday of every month. It's easy to get to by public transport. I'm happy to turn up to work every day. Something is terribly, terribly wrong....

Laptops posted to Ho Chi Min City have been confiscated by customs, we have been offered an official and and "unofficial" way to get them back. HAH. Also does anyone know of a file host suitable for business? It's a 700mb file we need moved but it's going to a CEO so the download page can't have ads all over it.

I'm still in bizzaro I.T land here. We are doing a large internal move at the moment. We are about one desk short, the CIO just sent this email out: "For those of you that are observant, you may have noticed that we don't have enough desks for everyone - we are one short. That has prompted me to decide to give up my desk and simply steal one where-ever I can find one - most of the time I hope to be here in **** but will also sit on other floors with other groups." I mean what loving weirdo place do I work where the loving CIO volunteers to give up his desk? Also everything else is still great too. I'm going to walk in front of a tram or something, I just know it.

Asking this here because this thread is like a concentrated I.T hive mind of sorts and I can't work it out. Simple thing, someone wants "Group similar task bar buttons" active. If she tries to go to properties she is denied because of lack of access. I have given her local admin and she still can't do it. Thing is if I log in as an admin on her machine the option is allready on, so I can't work out wtf.

Sorry for asking this in here but I read this thread daily and can't find anywhere else to stick it. I have no idea about HTML ETC, I have a HTML "Christmas card" that uses Flash. I need to get this file embedded into an email for a general mailout to the company. The guy that usually does this is away and I'm hosed if I can work out how to do it. Tried a few solutions from Google but nothing has worked so far. I can use Outlook 2003 or 2010. Help?

Had our work Christmas party on Friday. It's was 1920's gangster themed, it's the first dress up type party I've been to where the vast majority made an effort. There was a live band, comedians, a magician and poker/roulette. Also, beer... sooooo much beer.

So, the CIO handed me an envelope earlier. I was not expecting a Christmas Bonus this year since I've been here less than 6 months. It was not a bonus... it was however a pay raise of $6k from Jan 1. EDIT: Everyone got a CD from the CEO for Xmas "Tom Petty's Greatest Hits" whaa..

Yesterday I answered 3 calls and went to the pub for a 3 hour lunch, came back to our desks and had a CS LAN. This week is the best week.

Getting closer to deploying the 600 desktops, I may have to catch some awful disease and not come to work next week. Unrelated but an odd little black box turned up at the helpdesk. it's a bit smaller than a pack of cigarettes. It has a switch and a green blinking LED on one end. On one side are two discs of metal one of which looks like copper, the other of which is magnetic. Inside is a 9v battery. Here are some horrible phonecam pics, what the hell is this thing???: VVV Fine, I'm switching the internet off.

Day one of massive upgrade week: Things went... not as badly as they could have gone. The only real problems so far have been: 1) "That guy" but that was to be expected. 2) The Dell hardware installers forgetting to bring any Phillips head screwdrivers. 3) Being given a standard image instead of the helpdesk image I was expecting and having to source and work out how to install/config everything we use. Took he half the day but I got everything going, except I can't get AD working quite right. I have the "Find Users And Computers" module/control panel installed and set up but it's missing the Exchange tabs when I view a user. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing I haven't been able to find an answer on Google. This is on a Win7 64 box. Any help?
