My christmas bonus is having to work 12 hour days on some of the campus wide days off over christmas to deploy some big project. Payraises were cancelled and so were bonuses. Not even a card. I doubt I'll get even time off to match the days I was forced to work.

I thought the whole point of truecrypt was that you can't break into it without the passwords? Is there some kind of secret forensics knowledge that exploits something? We use either truecrypt or some mobile data armor thing at work for protecting laptops due to the number of idiots losing them.

Exactly. We use a type of rainbow table to accomplish this. EFS was another thing I had to learn, we can build a custom dictionary file based off of keywords on the registry/stored passwords/other things. It's pretty neat stuff. I'll never use it where I'm at, but it's still cool to know.

I have heard of some exploits for truecrypt, but I haven't done much research into it.

I will never have a need for this kind of thing but it still fascinates me. Like how they can piece together images that are fragmented over the entire drive looking block by block, rather than relying on the filesystem. So much cool technology comes out of such a specialized field.

I hate the price of Splunk. It's a good product (and we use it, but sparingly), but it's not worth the crazy prices of the higher licence. It's just a bloody database and search engine, why can't they charge sensible prices?

That's probably one reason they are successful.

I've had enough. This is the kind of crap I went through in my twenties working at call centers and the like. To have to be doing it all over again in my forties is just demoralizing.

You may get lucky and they'll just shitcan your boss for it and then promote you and you can fix everything!

I cannot loving BELIEVE he pulled that again. I can only imagine the HR guy is going to be loving FURIOUS when he sees the email. Nobody is going to fall for this plumbing emergency. In fact, if you're fast you should get over to HR and get them to call him at home and ask him to do some work remotely. Something that'll take an hour or so. I bet he's not even at home so you can bust him good.

I work at a University, in IT, and I find this whole situation bizarre. Could you not somehow track the amount of time you've worked on things for this single guy and then suggest that a personal IT person be hired purely for him.

Total up the stats, write some junk about service to other professors being effected, etc etc. I just don't understand it. We'd have found a way to put a stop to this by now, is your boss just totally afraid of professors?

I have to ask - does he actually produce/research/achieve anything at all? He just seems to spend all day loving around bugging people. Spin it so having his own IT guy would be a massive benefit to him? Better yet, casually mention another professor elsewhere who has a dedicated permanent IT guy assigned to him and then tell him how it will never happen here as he's not that important. It'll be sorted by Friday.

You know Dick, I think both of these options set you up for failure and you should stick to your decision to move on. The management seem useless there and if you let them move your boss into another role and push you into running the department you will have even more problems.

You say it'll just be you and the helpdesk guy. Once you get in charge you'll discover there's a huge amount of management "stuff" that needs doing that has been ignored or neglected by your boss. You're like me and you won't be able to ignore it, and will find a huge part of your day taken up by user meetings, forward planning, policies, procedures, fixing the hosed up licensing and so on. However, there's still all those tickets to be done and you can't leave the helpdesk guy to do them alone.

You won't get another person in the team, they'll give you the economy as the excuse for that. You'll be left with twice the work to do in the same time and you've already reached burn out stage.

4G instead of 8G of RAM.
The lowest resolution.
A Glossy screen instead of the matte I wanted.
No adapter for displayport to DVI.

Turns out that despite the ticket listing all the custom specs they ordered the base model as is. :(

Everywhere else I've worked has been generous to the guys who spend all day REALLY doing computer stuff. Here I had to fight like HELL to get a 22" monitor that can 1680x1050 and I still have the best monitor of the group.

The procedure for recycling fleets and fleets of old desktops/laptops becomes as easy as an image process and comes complete with audit/asset report for finance.

My new desire in life is to hack into an EBAN configuration and add every machine to be wiped.. then cut the power!
