Kind of a crosspost from my thread about poo poo you come across daily that pisses you off, but I finally get to join the ranks as a CJ. It definitely is an upgrade from my current gig in where I'm playing "don't get shitcanned before your vacation time accrues".

While it's fairly irrelevant to my field (aspiring EE), I am looking forward to being a Desktop Support Specialist and the alcoholism it brings (and a +$6/hr raise).

Turns out that I don't get paid for July 4th and I'm not qualified for vacation hours at my old job. :toot:

I asked in the Windows thread, but I gotta know before tomorrow:

At work we have a WDS server set up and I've been playing around with it using sysprep and whatnot. When I run sysprep and do /oobe /generalize, does this mean that it nukes all of the drivers off of the system for a "generalized" install? I ask this because I'm under the impression that I need to make an image for each time of machine we have (ex- Dell Desktop, Dell Laptop, HP desktop, HP laptop, etc). Am I a moron with eating up a bunch of space with images or can I just update one captured image and use that as the base install for ALL of the machines that come in?

This is ticket related and will determine how much I want to drink tomorrow.

I'm waist deep in a Win 7 migration that is actually going pretty well, partly because it's mixed in with with a hardware refresh, which means I'm starting by just checking the oldest third of the computers.

On top of that, I'm blown away by the Dell Optiplex 790. We're getting i5-2500s with 8 GB of RAM and the Professional series 24 inch monitor (P2411H/P2412H), three year warranty, and a nice keyboard and mouse, for only $950. For the research side, I'm getting the same but with i7-2600s for only $60 more. We've just ordered 20 of them for our admin office, and have ordered or will ordered 12 more for researches (replacing some 7 or 8 year old machines, so excited).

And to make it even better, they're all the small form factor cases, so they're really easy to carry around.

Tell me if you know how to get the network drivers to work with WDS. I'm so new to this job ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

They also have PS/2 ports which is weird for a computer in 2011.

Are you using MDT or did you really mean WDS? (MDT is free, and better)

If I can't find the drivers online, or if I'm feeling lazy, I use Driver Magician Lite to suck the drivers off a machine, and then import them into "Out of Box Drivers" in MDT. In WDS I suppose you use "Add driver Package" on the "Drivers" folder and then feed it the INF.

Definitely WDS. Good to know about the driver magician though.

Software that says that you need Java 6 update 3 and refuses to work otherwise. It's not like Sun/Oracle makes poo poo easy to find or download either, and not to mention that the Java installer won't do an unattended install properly (but I have a feeling desktop central might be the culprit here).

With .NET and C++ packages, most companies will package that in with their software versus sending you on a wild goose chase trying to find the one copy of Java that will work. I get that Java is easy to work on for developers and that it makes a lot of sense from the programming side of things, but as a "platform" it's loving atrocious, a liability and promotes lazy programming. I also realize that my arguments have been made millions of times in the past and Java isn't going anywhere fast.
