It's far from the worst in either franchise. I had fun with it when I saw it in theaters, I'd say it's worth a watch if you don't expect too much.

It's a lot of fun which is pretty much the top end of either franchise after Nightmare 1.

I put a qualifier on it for a reason. FvJ isn't the top of either franchise but it's around tier 2 of both and, still, really fun much like the films around it.

I actually think it's more fun than New Nightmare or F13 2 but certainly not better.

I think I was watching one of the special features of the Jason Lives DVD where the director Tom McLoughlin said the reason he played the violence in the film so campy was because he's genuinely concerned with the effect that kind of death-porn has on people so he tried to make it so ridiculous that it couldn't possibly be construed as sadistic.

That's interesting because I've always found most of the violence in that movie to be dopey (in a good way) except the one where the girl gets violently thrown through the window and then later the main characters don't discover her body just a room painted in blood. It's one of the most brutal kills in the series and clashes with the rest of the tone in a really obvious way.

No. No way. No goddamn way.

CyberSeduction is incredibly to me because the mother in it comes off as this shrill shrieking harpy and yet you're clearly supposed to think she's the lone voice of sanity, defending her children from ever seeing a titty. The dad is my favorite character though, there's the scene where he has to talk to the kid about porn and he pulls off "your mother wants me to have a talk with you (and I don't actually give a poo poo so just roll with it)" so goddamn well.

Also hilarious because you can find the mom totally naked in a number of movies, including getting railed against a rock by Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse.

That movie has so many options for favorite moments but I think mine has to be VIRGIN VAGINAS

I just watched VHS: Viral. Is it just me or does this thing feel like them going "we need to get one of these out this year, but VHS 3 isn't ready yet so...just do this instead." Like the actual segments were really good. Well, the first one sucked, but the other two were really good. The framing story was total poo poo though. And it didn't follow up on any of the things they set up in the framing story of 2. It seems like filler to me.

I watched Berberian Sound Studio. Amazing movie all around, although I don't know how to feel about vegetables now. The movie reminded me a lot of Polanski's apartment trilogy by way of David Lynch. I would like to see Toby Jones as the protagonist in more movies, I could watch him frown all day.

Someone was posting in the VHS Viral thread about how the framing shorts are underrated and talking about the mythology they're developing and I had no idea what the hell they were talking about.

Maybe we need to watch them as sequences without interruption by the other shorts? Is that a thing that exists on the Bluray or something? I've only watched them on streaming.

That was me. The first two V/H/S films basically set up that there's this secret society of snuff filmmakers who create these films as a sort of occult immortality ritual. Viral retcons things so that the 'secret society' is actually a Videodrome-style Artificial Intelligence that's trying to conquer the world.

The story with the skeletons was pretty fun in V/H/S Viral really liked it, skeletons own. The bookend story was kinda dumb at the end and not all that satisfying. Another meh from me with this series.

That's funny, I just made a thread for The Babadook and then came here and saw djf's thread

It's a good horror movie, one that I'm not as crazy for as others, but it's definitely doing the right things. Spoilers for the movie follow

It's interesting how it goes from allegory to literal horror and then back to allegory. The Babadook itself is meant to be this representation of Amelia's all-consuming grief, and for a while the movie implies that we might just be watching a woman's mental breakdown (that ambiguity was the scariest part of the movie for me, and it made the scenes of her terrorizing her son hard to watch). Then The Babadook becomes quite real, and by staring it down Amelia finds the ability to move on from her past.

Thankfully Jennifer Kent doesn't end things on a super-happy note. Like the book says, you can't get rid of the Babadook, so it isn't defeated. It's just weakened, forced to hide in the same place where Amelia keeps all her dead husband's things (this was a little too on-the-nose, but whatever). Like PTSD and personal traumas, the Babadook isn't vanquished. It's just manageable, a sort of lurking darkness you have to feed from time to time. It's a very literal take on the subject matter, but it's a lot more interesting than plenty of other horror movies.

A bit of a weird request, but is there a movie where a bad dude comes in through the side of a house instead of a window or door? Like a chainsaw or sledgehammer through the siding? I was thinking about how weak they really are in most modern home and now I want to see it on film to thoroughly freak myself out.

The framing story in two raised the question of where all these tapes are coming from, who is making them, and why. It seemed as if they were setting up some kind of weird VHS cult that was focused on making and collecting them for whatever reason, and that all of the poo poo was somehow connected. Viral still has a little of that, but it does it in the most pants on heads retarded obvious way at the very end and is, as Hollismason said, way too on the nose with it's preachy message.
