Any recommendations for what stands and a crossbar to buy to hold seamless paper? I need the seamless to go 8' at most. Probably less.

I like the telescoping pole Calumet sells. If I have C-stands I just use the arms to hold a seamless up.

Do you guys use Eneloops or Nizn batteries for your strobes? I can't decide if it's worth buying the Nizns or not.

I recently used a system that uses the cardboard center as the support pole. It's just tension based end pieces that go in and tighten/thicken to hold. It worked really well, and means you only have to carry the stands and end butts.

Sanyo no longer is the only player in that arena. I use the Duracells in hotshoe strobes and Pocket Wizards. I got some of the tenergy LSD batteries and they seem to be just as good as the rayovac hybrids I use. They are cheap as hell too.

TeMpLaR posted:Any recommendations for what stands and a crossbar to buy to hold seamless paper? I need the seamless to go 8' at most. Probably less. I have this one. It's okay. I give it maybe a 7/10. I also considered getting this one. At the time, they didn't have the promotion they have now (free roll of white seamless), and the reviews said it was a bit wobbly. Mine wobbles a bit, too, but it's not really at risk of falling over. My guess is that, in terms of quality, they're about equal. I have mine set to 12' so that it can comfortably hold 9' paper, which is standard paper width. If you're photographing people, you really need 9' length. It sounds awfully long but you really don't have to stand that far back before you see the edges of the paper, depending on your lens. (In poopinmymouth's shot on the previous page, that looks like 9' paper to me). If you're shooting products or something I would go with smaller size paper, 53" is the next one down, then 26". Those are standards that you'll be stuck with. My main frustration with my background stand is that if I want to shoot something smaller, 9 ft. wide paper can be difficult to work with. In a way, I wish I purchased this so that I could load shorter length paper on some of the other bars. Shmoogy posted:Do you guys use Eneloops or Nizn batteries for your strobes? I can't decide if it's worth buying the Nizns or not. I was amazed at how incredible the Pearstone batteries from B&H were. Much better than my rechargeable Duracells that I put so much faith into. (Brand name does not necessarily equate to better quality). Not only do the Pearstones charge more quickly, they KEEP their charge much longer. Coupled with the Pearstone Recharger, they're ideal for strobes. Do I sound like an advertisement or what? Mannequin fucked around with this message at Feb 7, 2010 around 23:18 |

It looks like I might be settling on a storage unit for my first studio space. None of them had particularly high ceilings, but the price is right. Does anyone have any suggestions for controlling spill from a low ceiling? I was just going to stick up some pieces of black foam core.

Factory Ten posted:Can someone explain to me the basics of fill flash, and when to use it? Fill flash is adding a small amount of light to soften or eliminate the shadows. For example, person standing in front of a window, with the sun behind them. The person will be overexposed if you meter for the window, or the window will be overexposed if you meter for the person. Adding a bit of flash will help you bring shadow (person) closer to the exposure of the highlight (window) so you can get an exposure that fits in your dynamic range. For portraits/lighting, say you have your main light off to the side, firing bare. This would cast dark shadows across the face. You could add a second flash as fill, so the shadows lighten and aren't as dark.

If anybody was looking to pick up another set of LSD batteries the eneloop power pack is on sale @ Amazon right now (28$) http://www.amazon.com/Sanyo-277265-...oductPromotions I just picked up a pack because 8 AAs & a charger alone is normally like $35.

Any opinions on Roscoe diffusion paper (3008) versus Roscoe grid cloth (3030). The first step to ultimate control of light is building all of your light modifiers from scratch, right? So I am going to build everything I want with POWER TOOLS an hour before I want it....

Not sure about the ultimate control part, but building them yourself is usually the best way to go so long as you can keep the results from looking homebrewed. Forgetting the Big Bag o' Strobes at the studio had us running to K-Mart for four shop lights, 100W bulbs, and sheer curtains. It saved our asses for $60 and a bit of creativity with gaffers tape, but it was ugly as hell and didn't look the slightest bit professional. Black Krylon is the cheap rear end photographer's best friend. 99% of client's probably can't tell the difference after a bit of black paint on light dishes and pvc backdrop stands, since a black finish means professional to most people for some reason.

I ordered some stuff through foto walser and it was fast, super quick email answers to questions, and cheap.
