Standing room only on the Disco Bus

So I'm just starting to get into off camera lighting, and I realized my camera is totally not up to the task. I know body upgrading is generally silly but my camera really can't deal with it - I got an RD-1s to deal with my old camera obsession and need for digital immediacy, and now I'm regretting the base ISO of 200 and the 1/125 sync speed. I'm mulling over something like a 20D (around 400USD used locally as far as I can tell), but if I can make up for my camera's inadequacies with more lighting gear and better technique I'd rather do that.

Well, nobody read this, but I did more thinking and I realized that a compact with a hotshoe might be up my alley. Anyone had experience shooting with those and off camera lights?

How do you guys connect your radio triggers to your flashes? If the flash is on a stand and the radio trigger connects to the flash via sync chord, where does the trigger go? Do you secure it via velcro? Let it dangle?

I put velcro on top of the flash. I suppose a bounce card could also attach at that point when shooting on camera, though I haven't tried it yet.

so I'm an idiot.

I picked up an SB-28 super cheap to add a little light to my kit, hoping to use it off camera with a sync cord. If it's a huge deal I'll get some sort of radio trigger kit.

Anyways, I'm tremendously confused on what type of PC Sync Cable to get: male to male, male to female, female to female? The port on the camera (D700) looks identical to the connector on the flash (sb-28).

Male-male. The ones on the camera and flash are female.

If anyone's into field hockey my stickbag doubles as my lighting gear bag - the side stick pockets fit umbrellas nicely, while the large inner pocket holds stands and a tripod.

I need some help picking out some light mods.
I currently have a speedlight (and borrow another one often), and I'm planning to buy a monolight (hopefully a PCB einstein) towards the end of this year. Ideally I could get a light modifier that would be portable enough to use conveniently w/ the flash but could handle a monobloc + modeling light. So something that's a decent size and that can handle the heat from a monobloc, but not crazy heavy or expensive. From my previous (limited) experience I like the control you get from softboxes better than umbrellas (but they are more expensive).

Is it stupid to try and get something to use both with speedlights and a monobloc, or should I just get something lightweight and cheap for now and get a "real" softbox later?
My budget is someone flexible (want to keep it under 300 or so, possibly less) depending on what the best option seems to be.

Another question - how do gels work on a monobloc? Do you just you just tape the gel inside the softbox or whatever? I've seen gel holders, but from my understanding they don't work in combination with softboxes.

I really appreciate any help, thanks!

Just get a really cheap umbrella or two for now and then shop again when you've got your monobloc?
