I'm in a Sticky Situation. I have a Nikon D60 ( no CLS commander) and I'm looking to get a flash unit to use as an off camera flash. My preference is for wireless, without having to fork out for an SU-800 or a SB-800+, what are my options? Sb-600 and an off camera cord is the easiest.. but what if I wanted wireless? Will the Sb-600 require anything to be used as a flash triggered unit like the 800/900 can? i.e. an Su-4 unit. What will its wireless I-TTL capabilities actually give me? Wondering what gear I should be aiming for...

SoundMonkey posted:The comedy part is that a D70 would be cheaper than getting a SU-800 or SB-800. Oh absolutely.. drat you hindsight. Since purchasing my D60 i'm finding all sorts of limitations such as the lack of CLS commander, and the lack of an in-body AF servo.. but I dont think that one can be corrected within the prosumer line of Nikons

Similarly, I have to give props to Luisx. He also does lighting writeups on a lot of his shots

I need a way of lighting this shot properly.. any suggestions?![]() Bonus if you can think of a way that I can work some human interaction into the shot.

I've just got myself another speedlight + remote, which totals two.. I've got an indoor model shoot, and I'm trying to think of cool ideas for using both lights. So far I can figure out positions for one light fine, but the second seems almost a burden.. "oh great, another variable". I can experiment on the job, but I'd rather go in with the confidence that I know what i'm after. Some Flickr groups are pretty good for putting up strobist diagrams, but i need more

If you had to choose one lighting set up for the rest of your portrait career, what would it be? ![]() Me? Shoot through umbrella and reflector for a Rembrandt triangle with a ringflash for fill.

I'm tempted to get a Softlighter.. anyone have strong feelings about them, either way?

It just looks like a boring snapshot. Spice it up a little.. make the composition more interesting. Had to laugh at the picture of a gun and the caption "I'm not used to shooting anything except people" ;D

What's the website that has a gallery of user submitted portraits etc, but every single submitted entry has a lighting diagram attached to it.

Bobx66 posted:Eh, we do take pretty quick photos. And likely the light isnt throwing anything off. My fixtures just put out two kinds of light and they are ugly as gently caress. Just wondering if there was a photography geared solution. Lower the ISO and up the shutter speed so it's effectively a pitch black photo without any flashes in the mix. Then, add flashes. Done.

So I'm shooting some girls tomorrow at full length + indoor setting, and I want to get a directly vertical "Spotlight" effect, but I don't want the horrible shadows that'd go with putting it directly overhead. Should I be using a large on axis fill to kinda neutralise any shadows, or should I just be putting the spotlight's beam slightly behind them so it doesn't affect the front of them? Or thirdly, put it slightly in front, but diffused. I've got three SB600's to play with. Initial thoughts: 1x bare but snooted directly above. 1x octobox on axis to fill in any shadows. 1x beauty dish at the safe "to the side and up" 45 degree angle to stop it looking too flat. Thoughts? I've got a few modifiers at my disposal (aside from grids ), so whatever it'll take to get it working.
