But it's still on jackstands because I need to ever-so-slightly trim down the front lugs so that they'll fit flush with the adapters I'm using. Welp,

looks good, what was the original bolt pattern?

The wheels are 4x100, previously used on a Miata. Mazda was stupid for (almost all of) the first-gen RX-7s though, and I have a 4x110 pattern that used lug bolts instead of studs. So now I have to cut down the screw-in studs I'm using in the front so that they won't stick out from the base of the adapters, but hopefully still leave enough thread for my stock wheels (with snow tires) to mount without the adapters.

Why couldn't I just have a GSL-SE with the 4x114.3 pattern

There's not enough thread engagement left for the stock wheels, according to the one stud that I test-cut This is dumb.

[edit] Might be able to just use ET lug nuts though...

Where did you pick up your RPF1s? Are there any dealers where you can get an especially good price on them?

I got them on Craigslist with the Yokohama tires on them for an insane deal. I basically got the tires for free (MSRP $500 or so) and they had only been autocrossed for a few events. Even though I knew I had to use adapters, I still jumped on them. To be honest, I really wasn't even looking for wheels at the time, so I don't know of any places where you can get them cheap, other than probably TireRack.

Anyway, I got the drat things on and sitting flush with the adapters, but now I have an inexplicable tire-rubbing issue on just the front driver's side. The sidewall's hitting the bottom of the strut assembly and I don't know why, because there's a good centimeter of clearance on the passenger's side. The car has been running perfectly straight on my stock wheels/winter tires (yeah yeah, shut up, it's only temporary), so I have no idea what's causing the fitment problem. Anybody have any ideas, other than getting an alignment? (Which, of course, might be kinda pointless right now anyway because I'm eventually going to be replacing a lot of bushings AND my rear axles.)

Wait, I wouldn't even be able to get an alignment with the adapters on, would I...

It would seem that your car has less negative camber on the driver's side. Is there any adjustment on the strut mount? Is the hub thickness any different on the driver's side? Stupid question, but are all the wheels the same offset and tires the same size (i.e. you have both the "fronts" mounted on the passenger side and both the "rears" mounted on the driver's side)?

Finally, it is definitely possible to get an alignment with the adapters (and wheels and tires) on.

All the wheels are the same width and offset, and the tires are all the same size. I am positive that the hubs are the same thickness on both sides, so I'm probably just going to see if I can adjust the camber on that side to hopefully let the wheel sit a bit farther from the strut. If I can't figure that out, I'll just have to get it to a shop somehow (there's no way I'd be driving on the rubbing tire, I'd have to swap a stock wheel on there for now and replace the adapter when I get there).

But I had to use spacers with the adapters in front. Now I just need to replace an assload of bushings, wait for my new axles to arrive (AGAIN), and then I can finally get an alignment.

Niiiice. Gotta love an original RX-7. I'm not really up to par in my RX-7 knowledge, so excuse me, but is that an SA or an FB? And what is the difference between the two?

The first generation RX-7 was split up into three series. Series 1 ran from 1979-80, and had the chassis code SA22 here in the states, and Series 2 (1981-83) and 3 (1983.5-85) switched to FB33 after the U.S. DOT-mandated 17-digit VINs came into effect (although everywhere else in the world still used SA22 for all of the first gens).

Series 2 and 3 look identical from the outside (except for the stock wheel selection), but Series 1 is fairly different in appearance, with steel bumpers that stuck out considerably, the license plate mounted higher up between the taillights, and thinner trim running around the outside of the car. Here's a 1979:

And here's a 1984 GSL-SE:

In 1984 and 1985, Mazda offered the GSL-SE, which was powered by a fuel-injected 13B instead of the carb'd 12A in the rest of the first gens, among other changes (like a much more standard 4x114.3mm bolt pattern instead of 4x110, goddamnit Mazda). Series 2 and 3 both used multiple catalytic converters and air pumps to manage to be emissions-compliant, but Series 1 used heat-exchangers and poo poo that I don't know much about because the design was awful anyway. Either way, both setups rob the engines of quite a lot of horsepower, so it's just best to rip them out and install a free-flowing exhaust if emissions inspections aren't required.

To answer your initial question, mine is an FB (1985 GSL), and I'm lucky because it's loaded with options and pretty much the best model apart from the GSL-SE. Four-wheel disc brakes, factory rear swaybar, LSD, A/C, sunroof, no power steering, and a bitchin' physical equalizer on the radio

I'm definitely leaving out a lot of stuff, but that covers most of it.

I'm well aware of the issues that these transmissions have with this engine (overheating). As soon as I have some spare time/money I intend on getting a transmission cooler for it. Most places I read about it said it's a fairly simple thing to do... I just have no idea where the best place or even how to mount it.

Better idea: manual transmission swap.

Over a decade ago my dad rear-ended a Grand Cherokee in his 240 during rush-hour traffic and did a couple thousand dollars worth of damage... to the Jeep. The Volvo only needed a new grille and headlight fixture, and the hood was so barely bent that he hammered and straightened it back by himself. I think he sold it at about 180,000 miles; it's probably still on the road somewhere.

I always get a kick out of people that say "OMG your gonna die owning rear wheel drive cars". When people ride with me in snow in my BMW with dedicated winters on, they often say wow this car does great in the snow. They are really shocked when I tell them its rear wheel drive with winter tires. Plus the DTC is really awesome. Hell I was shocked even on ice as to how much proper tires make a difference.

Fun anecdote: one night I delivered pizza with the winter tires on, and it had been sunny and fairly warm during the day, so some of the snow had started melting. It started snowing pretty hard during my shift though, so I was excited to get a nice feel for what the tires could do. My very first run, I pulled up to the house and started getting out of my car with the guy's order, and I nearly fell straight onto my rear end. Underneath about two inches of powder was a goddamn skating rink of black ice, and I never even felt it when I was driving. I am a believer now.

It's also pretty great being able to out-accelerate any FWD car in winter conditions (and some AWD cars if they've got lovely all-seasons), especially in left-hand turn lanes. Other people's expressions are priceless.
