Started a new college radio show this week, first show was a little bumpy with getting familiarized with the studio & set-up, but did three hours straight, mixed the styles up. Not how I would play in a club or on a mix tape, but happy with what I selected:

So, you asked for feedback, and what I'm going to say is that I love hearing like a long sort of feeling or pace over a mix. Like on some of the longer 1hr + mixes up on here you can really feel the pulse of energy through the songs connecting them to one another, and the pace and energy of the music speeds up and slows down but never does so abruptly. With a mix this short, I gotta say things like that don't happen. It feels sorta more like a playlist of tunes you like rather than something made to be put on and left to wow for hours at a time.
Like for example, I think your intro was really well done if long for less than 10 minutes of tunes, but the switch into the first chainsaw wobble was brutal. And if you want that yeah but it was totally unexpected. Same with the switch into the Mt. Eden track. I get the feeling if your library is deeper you could have attached these songs to one another much more smoothly.

Also dance music is just way more popular in practically every country but the US. Example: "Children" by robert miles hit #1 in france, germany, italy, norway, sweden, switzerland, austria and belgium, and was in the top 5 in australia, the netherlands, ireland, new zealand, and the UK, but only got to #21 in the US.
Yeah but our pop music is four on the floor so people play it in clubs and it works p well.

I honestly think the main reason dance music (especially straight beat dance music) is so unpopular in the US is because of our rampant homophobia and obsession with masculinity (because only queers and women like that disco crap). Most working-class guys I know would be shy to admit that they enjoy house or trance, but will happily talk about how they love dubstep because "it gets the girls' panties wet".
Blue collar manly men who go to raves can usually be seen against the wall in the drum n bass room nodding their head with a mean expression on their face.
You are friends with literal children, apparently.

The places I gig at are Top40/current rap only...I tried to play new poo poo when I first started playing out but immediately gave up because it was a futile effort. I dropped "Teach Me How to Dougie" in March of last year but because no one had heard it on the radio a million times yet, people were giving me the gas face. Now a year later, I can't go through a single gig without it being requested a million times.
My point is that regardless of where you live, the top40 crowds are literally the worst kind of people to play "deep cuts" for. They go out to hear only the music they know and if you try to play something that's new to them, you will get burned.
The good thing is that because the Top40 artists are obsessed with electro at the moment, it's now a lot easier to play remixes. Although I will be really glad when douchebags stop fist pumping anytime they here a 4 on the floor beat. We get it, you've watched Jersey Shore, that's hilarious.
FYI, I live in Atlanta and dj at places where college kids go. A lot of them, actually.
edit: i posted this in the phiz dj mixes thread but i think it warrants a posting here. this is the average person i deal with on any night i play out:

If you're in ATL where do you play / wheres good EDM? I'm spending the summer in the city and was hoping for somewhere nice to hang out.

I'mma go make a cutting edge rhoombaton/brostep mix for all you. sperg on!
Maybe I'll put up a "non beatport" house mix later or something, but I'm going to go ahead and make it all DJ Sneak/Fast Eddie to see how that sits. Should go over well.
what is rhoombahton I'm intrigued.
Is it samples of roombas spliced with reggaeton? Count me in
speaking of moombahton here's a bunch of new tracks from the moombahton massive in DC

favorite is definitely the edit of pacha on acid

So goons, do I have an ear for this? Try not to pay attention to the atrocities made with filters and effects during the songs, I just wanna know how my transitions worked out.
Mixing is practice, track selection is the art. Can't buy good taste, but you seem alright in that department
In regards to mixing, just play around with one type of track transition in a variety of songs until you feel comfortable with it. For example, one afternoon do nothing but chorus slams, with a variety of different tracks and see which tracks it works in and which tracks it doesn't. Another day do nothing but blend verses together. Another do nothing but blend breakdowns. Come hang out in the DJ thread!
Don't play around with your BPM in the middle of the tune playing.

I'm surprised we don't see more Mixlr love in this thread. I find that I hate posting mixes that I've sat down and said "I will record this mix for the masses" because they're never perfect to me and worth saving. Instead, I prefer to get together with my DJ buddy and drink beers and see what happens. We broadcast live on mixlr, for better or worse, and then as a bonus it records it. Anyways, awesome site if you've never heard of it. Me and my buddy are live mixing electro house/progressive/techno at http://mixlr.com/five-patts/chat, I'm Hoodrow Trillson, and I DJ with Five Patts. Here's your "I have a dream" MLK Mix. If you manage to tune in, we are open to critiques.
Record everything you do and listen to it when you do other things so you can hate all the stupid mistakes you'll make. Then you won't make them anymore.
