I'm in San Diego...so mark me down for SoCal. edit: I'll post something once things get settled down. It took me 3 days to get back from Dublin, and now I'm going out of town for work. I know that doesn't really affect anyone I just needed to vent. gently caress US Airways.

I'm still getting used to them. There's some dope jams on there though, and one or two that I dropped in to please MY GIRLFRIEND. edit: Oh and I dropped in that Gutterpump song because you guys were talking about it earlier in the thread...it's a pretty fun song. Anae posted:Good selection (very good actually, especially for someone who presumably doesn't mix d'n'b often), beatmatching is a little off in places (between Microdaze and Transporter for example), and the mixing is a little boring - d'n'b mixing focuses around being exciting. Switching up long blends with creative chopping and cutting, teasing tunes, rolling out tunes for longer and then doing some quick mixing for a few tunes, etc. You just seem to mix the intro with the outro and let each tune play for both breakdowns. I pretty much only ever play the second breakdown of a tune if I've teased a tune over the top of it or if it simply has an UNMISSABLE breakdown (see: Fresh - Offworld). Great for a first try though, I'm impressed Thanks for the feedback. I used to listen to a lot of drum 'n bass in like 2000 to 2003 and I always wanted to mix some. I kept it safe on the mixing because I wasn't entirely familiar with the songs...I did one like 20 minute practice just to get a feel for it then I made this mix. Next time I'll do something less safe.

Socket Ryanist posted:Swiss Kebab, are there any major (as in top 10 in any field) universities near you? Are you near any of the 15 most populous metropolitan areas in the country? If the answer to both of those are "no", you're probably not going to find the crowd most of the people in this thread are aiming at. The places I gig at are Top40/current rap only...I tried to play new poo poo when I first started playing out but immediately gave up because it was a futile effort. I dropped "Teach Me How to Dougie" in March of last year but because no one had heard it on the radio a million times yet, people were giving me the gas face. Now a year later, I can't go through a single gig without it being requested a million times. My point is that regardless of where you live, the top40 crowds are literally the worst kind of people to play "deep cuts" for. They go out to hear only the music they know and if you try to play something that's new to them, you will get burned. The good thing is that because the Top40 artists are obsessed with electro at the moment, it's now a lot easier to play remixes. Although I will be really glad when douchebags stop fist pumping anytime they here a 4 on the floor beat. We get it, you've watched Jersey Shore, that's hilarious. FYI, I live in Atlanta and dj at places where college kids go. A lot of them, actually. edit: i posted this in the phiz dj mixes thread but i think it warrants a posting here. this is the average person i deal with on any night i play out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_j053f69Ig TheWevel fucked around with this message at 15:48 on Mar 25, 2011 |

thewaablah posted:Playing Top 40 music for people that like Top 40 music seems to me like a nightmare to me. Right there with being a corny wedding DJ. It completely changes how I look at DJing, I play music I like and music I would listen to for people that enjoy it as well. Playing music I hate (I don't hate all Top 40, but you get the idea) for people I probably would hate based on their musical choices (pretentious I know), just seems so degrading. DJing is a hobby for me. What's the point of a hobby if you are miserable doing it? That's what jobs are for DJing Top40 is a legitimate challenge to me and I think that's why I like it. You really have to read the crowd, figure out what they want to hear, keep them interested, while also trying to get new people on the dance floor...all while keeping your bartenders/staff happy. Oh and while you're doing that and mixing songs, people are coming up to you asking for either songs you've already played, about to play, or songs that you wouldn't play ever. There's a lot more juggling to it than "oh here's the top 40 poo poo, I will only play these songs". You have to be more dynamic than that. I would love to do a house/nu-disco/funk night somewhere but getting those gigs is nearly impossible because I don't have the promoter contacts or time to deal with that. I have plenty of gigs wanting me to pay me to do Top40 stuff, so I stick with that. It is my hobby but I think if I quit my job, I would still make enough money a week to cover my bills with the gigs available to me. It's just that there's no 401k with DJing. LouieTheCuban posted:Out of all the gigs I've head, the absolute worst ones were at the local "college bars" where I was supposed to "play popular music". Of course every single sloppy drunk girl is yelling at me to play Kesha while I'm mixing as diverse a set as I could, and if I played a song no one has heard before, for the most part the crowd wouldn't respond. That's your fault, not the crowd's. You should able to look at them and immediately know what they want to hear. Seriously, profiling is your best friend as a DJ. If you're a producer then yes, play your music, those people are there to see you, but if you're not, read the crowd. quote:I give Top 40 DJ's props because it's simply a style that I'm not great at mixing, but at the same time I can't help but think those guys are doing it for the money, or the "I'm a DJ" look. Like I said earlier I do it because it's pretty challenging.
