I'd like to thank all you guys for writing this stuff up. I've been reading it for the past few days and the amount of stuff I've learned is absolutely mind boggling. I know I will not remember hardly any of it, so I will definitely keep coming back to a lot of the tuts, and I still don't understand colour profiles haha!
I just bought lightroom too because you guys make it look and sound like an excellent tool to go along side photoshop! I look forward to trying to learn it, do you guys have any places to start with it? Or just play around and see what happens?

I have this one picture I've had for ages that I think has the potential to be awesome. However I'm struggling to process it well.

Here's the original: http://j.photos.cx/IMG_1009-ee7.JPG

And here's something like what I was thinking, but it's still not great: http://j.photos.cx/IMG_1009small-f4f.jpg

What would you guys do with it? I really wish I'd shot RAW now. I hope too much detail is not lost in the highlights? Shooting in an alley is hard!

here is a quick try:

here's what i did:

1) duplicated the layer, changed blend mode to soft light. duplicated that layer. merged layers.
2) cloned out lights
3) duplicated the layer, high pass, soft light. (i really like the texture of the cobblestone so i thought this would bring it out a little bit)
4) turned down the saturation a little bit
5) warmed it up a little bit with a warming filter (i realize that this makes the color balance off, but i think it looks better)

Awesome thanks man, I'll give the same a go and see how I get on!

I combined two of my fading actions that got something reasonably close. Run the one called vintage fade. You can adjust the opacity on the layers, I already lowered one of them to get something close to that photo. Let me know if all three actions are in there, I've never exported an action set before.

That link doesn't appear to work??
Also I think the link maybe has your ftp password in it so I've removed it from the quote.
Would it be easier to just email it to me? (A5H_87(at)hotmail.com)
Thanks again!

Is this the right thread to ask about lightroom?
I'm using lightroom 2.4 and it appears to have deleted a bunch of random images in the middle of some images that I imported.
Why would this be? And is there any way to get them back? Kind of annoying really. Is there any way I can make lightroom not be able to delete things?

Are you sure you just didn't remove them from the catalog by accident? Because Lightroom won't physically delete the file unless you confirm it on the popup dialog.

They were in the recycle bin! :stare:
Have I done this somehow myself?? I mean, lightroom can't do that right? I just don't understand why a random chunk of photos vanished.

Can anyone tell me what these photos have had done to them in post?
http://www.worlddriftseries.com/fd2010/so/part2_large/index.html

The colours and everything seem to 'pop' much more than any of mine and I'm wondering how it's done. Just saturation increases or what? I can't seem to do it :(

Do you have an example of your images? Photos under that link don't seem to be abnormally saturated. They just look like they're perfectly focused under good light.

There's mine.

So did I do something wrong when shooting them??

They just don't pop at all in comparison and look boring as hell :(

I dunno. Even when it was sunny like here: http://cdn.driftworks.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0363.jpg it still doesn't look as good.
So you guys reckon that dude's shots came straight from the camera almost then?
I guess I should step up my shooting game rather than worrying about post.

E: Also maybe a busier background helps? I notice he has more to pan against.

Is he doing that in post though or like shooting wide open with some ND filters on?

Looking through his flickr I can't decide: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coldtrackdays/tags/larrychen/

I've never shot at 400mm so I guess that's what F4 looks like without post anyway?
Shooting at iso50 also which I don't have.

Ah okay!

xzzy posted:

Background does help on panning shots, even if it's blurry it helps fill in the picture. It adds color too. Tracks aren't designed to be scenery however, so it's rarely something you can control. Cropping the picture down so the vehicle fills the frame can help this.

Also note how his shots in the sun lack specular highlights.. so not only did he have great lighting, he had a great angle where he could get the vehicle fully lit without a bunch of reflections.

But again, with the way race tracks are designed, getting those angles is very difficult. Especially at Silverstone.. which has spectators approximately a thousand miles from the track surface. You'll need special access to get to the sweet spots.

This was with a press pass :( I only have 200mm maximum length though. Silverstone sucks.

I don't think the toning on the image matches the subject of the photo in the slightest. You have two bright colors on the car itself (that and the car itself is visually loud, but you toned the images to have sort of a dark, muted tobacco hue to it. I'd suggest masking off the car and doing color work on them separately dropping the saturation of the background more than that of the car, so the car stands out more.

I'll give that a go. Thanks man :D
Is there a quick way to mask stuff out? Or just do it manually with pentool/selection tool?

Not bad, not over the top. The vignette in the upper left corner is bugging me though. I'm sure it's not, but it feels like it's the only dark corner. I'd dodge that corner a little to make it a little (lot?) lighter.

Alternately, are you using lightroom 3? Try turning on lens profile correction on your source image to get rid of the vignette, or crank the post-crop vignette slider in the positive direction.

Thanks buddy!

Fixed?

I've just done a batch resize in irfanview. With all the advanced settings unticked apart from resize. For some reason it's slightly changed my colours? It's annoying as gently caress because everything looks a lot more desaturated after the resize. Thoughts?

I've come up with:
Sharpening: 22, 1.0, 25, 0
NR: 52, 72, 0, 52, 50

Curious what others use as I am really new to this :)
