I have a picture that I'm having trouble in post with and I'm wondering if one of you can help me out. I'd really like to hear some advice or tips on what can be done with this one, as I'm pretty happy with the picture before processing!

This is the original.

This is what I have done, but I'm not very happy with.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
There's a lot of information loss on his hair and shirt. The subject's got the right exposure, try masking him out and giving only the background contrast. Post-proc aside, the second crop doesn't work as well as the first one. He appears to be hunched over, rather than leaning on something. Nice picture though, where's it taken?

Does post-proc include organization? I'm having a hard time understanding the mentality to organizing, naming, trimming, exporting, folder locations, etc etc. that's key to not moving like a turtle when I'm editing photos.

Right now I'm name the photo batch when I import [Month-Day-Year][Title][#] and move it into folder that also contains catalog. I flag rejects, edit->select rejects and delete off of disk. This part is bad, but I export it into a seperate folder on Desktop as jpegs and upload to flickr. Then I flag the ones that are good enough to print.

That's really useful, thanks. That naming scheme makes sense now in a macro-micro kind of way. I just realized my naming scheme would organize alphabetically to months, no matter the year either!

Hands up if you're catalog's four years old, folders go YYYY>YYYMD>YYYY_MM_DD_Custom Text_001

edit: I think a lot of people just use catalogs awkwardy, like using different catalogs for different projects or semester. Every student I know has a whole cache of catalogs because they just import without really caring and regret it later when they have hundreds of photos spread out everywhere.
