No problems, the guy at my record store was raving about some Ariel Kalma records he just got in who I had no idea about. A great new age french musician who plays a lot of flute, close to some American minimals like Terry Riley and Philip Glass but unique in his own ventures. Here's a few of his albums that came recommended

Can anyone recommend me some classical pieces that sound similar to the soundtrack to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?

I tried to look into pieces that inspired Koji Kondo's style for OoT, but I can only find his influences on other Zelda games.

I'm trying to broaden my knowledge of classical music and opera, so I'm open to any suggestion.

(Should I cross-post into the classical thread as well?)

I think John Philips Souza was a big inspiration.

You may have already heard of them, but Skywave should be right up your alley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww1IghJxyt4

They eventually split into A Place to Bury Strangers and Ceremony. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNeyESSTBhU

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but the jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD do an excellent medley of assorted Zelda themes:

So Pandora isn't helping a whole so maybe someone here can. I am looking for bands/albums that will scratch the same itch that I get from:

Slint - Spiderland (especially "Washer")

Rodan - Rusty (especially "The Everyday World of Bodies")

Hoover - Lurid Traversal of Rt 7 (especially "Route 7")

Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime (especially "Do You Compute?" and "Sinews")

I guess basically bands similar these bands (or songs) that have a quiet/rhythmic buildup to a loud, noisy, cathartic finish.

from what you posted, i've gotta assume that you know about Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, June of 44, and the Shipping News, but, well, if you don't...

Bedhead is really excellent at the deliberate buildup/release. Codeine isn't bad for that, either, and pretty much any 90s emo band has at least a few tracks that fit the bill exactly (Christie Front Drive, Elliott, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jejune, Policy of Three, etc).

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, you all picked up on what I was getting at. I own most everything released before 2000 or so by June of 44, Codiene, Mogwai, and Unwound. I have the first Shipping News CD but I don't know that I ever gave it a real listen. Explosions in the Sky I've liked what I've heard and I'll look into them more.

I bought a ton of CDs in the 90's and was really into finding out about new bands but I don't buy much new music anymore. So I was kind of hoping that there were bands that had taken that style of dynamic shifts further in the last ~15 years.

Talk Talk?!? I bought It's My Life when it came out in high school and I remember them as melodic and synth driven. I'll have to check out their later stuff.

These are great too - thanks! The song by The Van Pelt especially. I thought that Karate song sounded familiar and sure enough I have it on CD. I have "Anything Near Water" by Chokebore - will check our their other stuff.

The Crownhate Ruin is another band I remember that kind of fits.

Back in the early-mid 90s I relied almost exclusively on record reviews in Option Magazine to find out about bands. That and my phases where I would buy anything that came out on a label (SST, then 4AD, then Homestead, then Touch and Go, Amphetamine Reptile and Sub Pop, then Matador)

I need a bunch of R&B recommendations that basically cover the last 15 years.

Stuff I have now is late 90's early 2000's; Montell Jordan, Joe, Kc and Jojo.

I'm looking for all the good stuff after that period up until now.

Also is there an actual R&B thread or is folded into the NMD Raps thread?

It's folded in with the rap thread. There was an old R&B thread before but it was like 2 pages and disappeared. I'd recommend asking there as well.

For the time period you're talking about, the biggest names I'd say you were missing are The_Dream, R Kelly, Usher, T-Pain, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, and Justin Timberlake. You also get the neo-soul dudes (most of who got started in the period you mention but still kept making music throughout)-D'Angelo, Maxwell, Bilal, Musiq. All of them have made really good/great music since 2000.

More recently The Weeknd, Miguel, and Frank Ocean have gotten a decent amount of press. I like Miguel a lot, Weeknd does some interesting things with the tone and mood his music sets but is only meh in terms of writing/singing, and Frank Ocean is a dude who's perfectly fine but I just don't get into very much.

None of this touches at all on all the female singers like Ciara, Rhianna, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, etc etc. But a lot of people tend to consider them "pop" so idk, it's weird.

Those are all very "entry-level" for the most part, but they're dudes who if you're not familiar will at least give you a good base to work from. Tbh for the most part when I'm wanting more R&B style stuff, I either go to things prior to the time you mentioned, or more hybrid rap/singing stuff or even some of the 2step/purple dubstep/UK bass stuff so unfortunately I can't give you much more than that. Also fyi Lupe's a rapper and I don't even know if he's sang on any of his songs.
