Nobody outrules the Marquise de Cat!
I'm looking for recommendations for very popular music that doesn't suck too hard. I like TV on the Radio, Radiohead, Gorillaz... and on the other side of the spectrum, I like some Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, and lots of pleasant pop music with some electronic influence that has some kind of statement at least some of the time.

Basically, I want to be able to chit chat about popular music without having to listen to a lot of total crud. I have no interest in Lady Gaga or the new Eminem album. I have a hard time figuring out what anyone other than me listens to, as I tend to listen to a lot of IDM and chiptunes and Commodore 64 music and other nerdy bullshit.

There's another, more specific request I'd like to make, and that's "hard pop". It's hard for me to describe, but it's a sort of aggressive electronic pop music that seems to be a British sort of thing. I'll make some examples of the kind of sound I'm thinking of (Youtubes included because the videos are often awesome and it's also a good way of getting the idea):

George Michael - Freek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrOe1Eq1N6U
Scissor Sisters - Filthy/Gorgeous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hzI7JHivm0&feature=fvst
Sugababes - Freak Like Me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGSajAGg9h4&feature=fvst (This is perhaps the purest example of the kind of sound/aesthetic I'm trying to convey)

More gritty, aggressive pop music would be nice.
