While we're talking about chiptunes, I've always loved video game music but i pretty much intensely dislike chiptunes. Most of the time it just seems that the artist uses the chiptunes as a lovely gimmick for mediocre music. Like they sat down and thought they were going to make something that is chiptunes and they shoehorn themselves into the genre instead of making something original that doesn't sound like ill fitting noises awkwardly slapped on top of overused chiptune sounds.

The only chiptunes i've really liked is some stuff by big giant circles and it's still really hit or miss. I love the first half of Flicker but the second half it turns into an anticlimactic and badly done drum thing. You Can Have Mine is pretty good though. They don't make me think that it's a cheap cargo-culting of NES music like most chiptunes does.

Pretty much, is there any chiptunes that isn't a gimmick?

A little bit late on this, but I think I'm generally in the same boat as you, as far as enjoying video game music but meeting most chiptune with distaste. The one artist that was different from me was an0va. He makes chiptune music with the sensibilities of math rock, one of my favorite styles. There still is a very corny and gimmicky sound I suppose, but if you want your bleeps and bloops to happen in odd time signatures this is the project to go to.

If you're going to listen to Foxy Shazam and want to avoid metal, be cautious with what albums you listen to. I personally love Introducing Foxy Shazam and The Flamingo Trigger, but you would not. Example:

My two favorite bands are Animals as Leaders and Intervals. I'm not really a fan of vocals in my music. If someone could recommend a band similar to either of the two I mentioned, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm not generally big on djent, but there are a couple of solid instrumental bands in the style.

Cloudkicker's early stuff may fit the bill, it's also a bit atmospheric and post-metalish at times:

Another band that is probably worth checking out is Chimp Spanner - he may be even more in line with what you like as he also came out of the big djent fad that produced so many bands a couple of years ago:

You might like some older '90s hip hop. Experimental hip hop has been at an incredible peak in terms of the volume and quality being released lately as well. Hopefully among all those links you'll find something to latch on to and be able to branch out from there.

I'm looking for some music in a genre I've had a soft spot for, but can barely find any of: Namely, "heavier" spins on Spaghetti Western style music, from rock to metal to industrial or maybe even limited techno. Actually, any musical twists on the genre would be cool. The showdown music in Season 4 of Breaking Bad felt like modernized SW music as well, while not being heavy at all, but I still like it.

Basically, I think there's flashes of exactly what I mean on the Escape from LA soundtrack, but they're only 30ish seconds long. It's shockingly hard to find this stuff, in particular since even a space Western tends to play the genres straight. I am also 100% for remixes or covers of classics that fit the bill.

I don't have any entire bands that fit this bill, but as a one-off track, I think you would really enjoy Monkey3's cover of Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in the West. They're an italian post-rock/stoner rock band, and the song incorporates the type of guitar tone you would expect from them. Definitely a heavier re-imagining.

Since I got a lot of good suggestions, I actually have one more request. I am looking for anything similar to Rolo Tomassi and iwrestledabearonce, the only bands I can think of kinda similar are Horse the Band and Between the Buried and me. I guess kinda weird mathcore/metalcore female vocalist a bonus.

I'm interested in stuff like this too, although I've never been big on iwrestledabearonce.

You might dig Cerce if you're looking for female fronted stuff, although they're grindcore as opposed to mathcore.
As for mathcore bands similar to Rolo Tomassi, I would highly recommend The Number Twelve Looks Like You if you haven't heard them. No synths and no female vocals, but they have similar ways of writing songs.

Also, Big Black Delta looks to be a fantastic find, so thanks for that.

Lately I've been bingeing on a band called Adebisi Shank. I love math rock of all sorts, but I am especially enamored with they way they manage to be rhytmically complex while still writing really catchy, dancy material. Best example of this is probably the end of Genki Shank.

There are a couple of bands they get compared to who occasionally hit similar grooves, namely Battles and Giraffes? Giraffes! (a bit more of a stretch on that one.) Even some mathcore bands like Rolo Tomassi can hit the sorts of grooves I am looking for with their breakdowns.

May be a small niche, but any help finding more hard, syncopated, and mathy grooves along those lines would be greatly appreciated. Bonus points for heaviness and/or dissonance.

Thanks! I already know of and enjoy And So I Watch You From Afar, Bats, and The Redneck Manifesto, so I'm sure I'll find other great stuff there as well.

Most of their stuff doesn't really seem to match up to that song in terms of quality or energy (a lot of their other stuff seems to be real laid back and/or acoustic) but it doesn't matter because that's the best song ever.

Barky and Don Caballero are both great. I swear, math rock drummers are literally always amazing. I haven't heard one math-rock band with a lame drummer.

Already love Ghosts & Vodka - I believe I was actually the first to post them in the math rock thread a couple of years ago. Like more than a couple other math rock bands, their affliction of Three Guitarist Syndrome renders them a bit too dense to achieve the sound I was looking for, although You Slut! kind of manage it. If you love math rock drumming you should check out By The End Of Tonight's demo, In A Letter To The Sandbox. Through a miracle of self-indulgent playing and bad mixing, the drummer creates quite a spectacle.

I also know Don Cab, but not Barky. I'll have to check them out.

You're looking for Cinemechanica. The Foals album Antidotes also reminds me of Adebisi Shank a bit, but they're hardly math rock. Whatever, maybe you'll like them. Or maybe DDMMYYY (math rock band names are stupid!!)

Chll Pll and other various Zach Hill projects might be something you're interested in, but they get a little more "out there" than the stuff you've posted.

Lastly, Zu. They're very heavy, very dissonant, and definitely syncopated. Also the sax + distorted bass combo is just so loving cool. that song actually ends like halfway through the video fyi

These responses just keep getting better! The Martial Arts and Face Tat are two of my all time favorite albums, and everything else here will be listened to immediately.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - "Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than the Last; The Inexorable March of Progress Will Lead Us All to Happiness"

Also, any time someone brings up mathrock, I have to mention NoMeansNo. They are the daddies. Late 80s existential hardcore jazzpunk. Like, put Oingo-Boingo, Miles Davis and The Ramones in a blender and them make them play proto-thrash songs about the rebellion against identity.

This all sounds amazing too. I should really read the threads I post in more often.

On a totally unrelated note and in sort of a cross-post from the "Where Should I Start With..." thread, can anyone recommend me some good renditions of Stravinsky, Bartok, or Chopin pieces?

If you haven't heard him, Madlib is absolutely essential for jazzy hip-hop production. His album Shades Of Blue consists of him mixing and mashing original old jazz recordings at blue note records. He's also done notable collaborations with Dilla and M.F. Doom.

Second (and I sort of asked for this before but got more about guitarists and fusion groups), I would like some more solo bass players (preferably instrumental and electric) to make myself feel bad about my own playing. I've already got stuff by these guys:

Jaco Pastorius
Marcus Miller
Stanley Clarke
Les Claypool
Stuart Hamm

I'm for sure planning to get into Victor Wooten and I'm interested in Me'shell Ndegeocello. Normally I would scout out some names on RateYourMusic, but there are very few album ratings for this kind of music, so I'll trust goons' word. Are Jeff Berlin and Billy Sheehan worth checking out?

.

While he's not normally a jazz bassist, Squarepusher has a live album of Solo Electric Bass that's pretty impressive.

Adam Nitti plays with a band but might fit the category.

Jonas Hellborg is a ridiculous bassist with two solo albums, The Bassic Thing(can't find link) and Elegant Punk.

Apparently he has a lot more than that, including an album with Buckethead and Michael Shrieve (the drummer of Santana during their peak). I need to get on that.

I just picked those two albums because they're playing unaccompanied. For band he's played in, I'd recommend the stuff he has done with Shawn Lane and Jeff Sipe. This crazy album has some good stuff on it if you're down for a bit of ridiculous jazz-metal.

I've recently discovered Laddio Bolocko and noticed a remarkable similarity to the band Zu, who are also a sax and guitar driven modern Italian experimental band combining noisy, abrasive metal and free jazz. Are there other bands that fit into this niche?

Another recent find is Satanicpornocultshop, which reminds me of World's End Girlfriend and makes me wonder how much more awesome, hectic, genre-switching, sample abusing music there is in this vein.

Basically looking for instrumental electro that's hard to the point of being borderline abrasive with longer, more complex melodies all still over a simple, dancy beat.
