Irritated Goat posted:This is more of a directed recommendation. I want to grab a mp3 copy of Beach Boys' Pet Sounds but which one? Amazon shows a 40th Anniversary, a stereo and a mono release Pet Sounds was originally mixed down to mono, per Brian Wilson's specifications. Therefore, the mono is Brian Wilson's original mix (likely remastered but still), while the stereo is updated to be, well, stereo (left and right channel distinction, among other things). As far as I can tell, the 40th Anniversary MP3s are the remastered stereo versions (while the 2012 mono mp3s are the latest version). As for which is "better", well, that's personal preference. The "purist" option (whatever that means) is probably the mono version but you should honestly just A/B(/C) the snippets and see which sounds the best to you, and if you can't tell, just go with whatever's cheapest.

Juttman posted:This is vague, but can anybody think of rock music that has prominent pedal steel? I mean like "Breathe" by pink floyd and "prison food" by ben folds. I love the sound, but it seems like a rarity in rock. Going for the One by Yes is one that immediately springs to mind. Close to the Edge (the album and the song) has pedal steel all over it. You've also got a good chunk of Queens of the Stone Age (which is lap steel but still gets that soaring sound), George Harrison's song Behind that Locked Door, Grateful Dead's Sugar Magnolia (and lots of other things featuring Jerry Garcia, like Teach Your Children by Crosby, Stills, and Nash), and It Just Might be a One Shot Deal by Frank Zappa. If you're looking to get more into non-country pedal steel, you might want to look up sacred steel players like Robert Randolph, A.J. Ghent, and the Campbell Brothers. E: Pete Drake was a studio musician for a lot of rock records, but I'm pretty sure his solo stuff is mostly country-tinged. Declan MacManus fucked around with this message at 06:02 on Sep 3, 2013 |

I've been really into Mastodon, particularly stuff like Blood Mountain through The Hunter but I enjoy stuff like Remission as well. What are some more bands that have heavy parts as well as psychadelic/progressive/melodic sections? Nothing too technical, though, I tend to hate stuff like Dream Theater.
