Okay, here's a request that'll stump you guys - what's a good artist that blends/switches between really happy, even saccharine music with really hardcore, harsh stuff? I'm thinking specifically of Bubblegum Octopus, who mainly does cutesy chiptunes and falsetto vocals with occasional death growls, and Passenger of poo poo, who mainly does similar cutesy chiptunes with harsh noise/speedcore beats/high-pitched shrieking.

You may enjoy Cutting Pink With Knives. Well really everybody should enjoy Cutting Pink With Knives but it's the only thing I can think of that is along the lines of your request.

You want post-rock, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3zTd8LpLWc (Not EITS, but an amazing song/video)

EITS is more "twinkly" than Pianos, but if you want to get into them, I always liked "The Earth Is Not A Cold, Dead Place." The Friday Night Lights soundtrack (the movie, that is) is pretty much all them and is pretty amazing too.

I'm looking for recommendations for bands that feature very technical and interesting instrumentation. Something along the lines of Meshuggah, where the focus is on the technicality and creativity. Intense drum/guitar solos, alternating time signatures, etc. Stuff that sounds great and makes you think "drat, how do they do that?" Dragonforce is another one that fits this, though they tend to be pretty repetitive from song to song.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be metal, though that tends to be the genre that fits this description. Layered, interesting electronic music also appeals to me.

The Dillinger Escape Plan are rumored to come up with time signatures by rolling dice.

Bomb The Music Industry! is quite energetic and confessional. The music is a lot more "punchy" than Pinkerton, given how many cues BTMI! takes from ska and pop-punk rather than Weezer's power pop.

Recommend me something else with tight, ringing, exciting guitar work but with some vocal base. Generally I don't like anything ultra math rockish and MTB doesn't consider themselves math rock anyway. Not too clean, music rough around the edges is fine.

I'm giving a lecture next week on the history of the US intelligence community since World War II. Any suggestions that might fit one or more of the following themes?
-Spies, espionage, intelligence
-Songs related to US involvement in Latin America, the Middle East, etc., for example protest/folk songs
-Songs related to surveillance / invasion of privacy (for example, "Every Breath Your Take" by The Police)

There are lots with appropriate sounding names, but fewer that are 1) actually on-point (ex. Dylan's "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" sounds right but is mostly his usual babbly lyrics) or 2) kind of lame / obvious (ex. Coldplay's "Spies")

I'm looking for something in the vein of Ratatat to listen to while working. Something to keep my energy up but also nothing with distracting vocals. I haven't looked for new music in a few years and I don't listen to much electronic, so here's what else I have and my notes on them: Air is okay but it can put me to sleep; Daft Punk (excluding Discovery) works but not as well as Ratatat for some reason (I think Ratatat has more of a.. melodic and harmonic component that pleases my neurons); Neu! and Stereolab (not really related to any of these but motorik works for work, although Kraftwerk gets me too spaced out). Justice is a little too spazzy. Julia Kent's faster, more rhythmic songs work OK for a bit of a change in pace.

Basically think of what you'd listen to on Adderall and you have 10-page paper to do overnight. (This is not actually my situation.)

You may like Kavinsky, who is famous for the following song that was used in Drive:
