Definitely check them out. Bath and Leaving Your Body Map are both great albums, as is My Fruit Psychobells. And apparently they just put out a reunion album earlier this year, which I was not aware of until just now. Sweet!

Edit: New album is here, free download.

I want melodic and/or ambient electronica recommendations. By ambient I don't necessarily mean beatless, but having ambience. Alternatively, just recommend good electronica that doesn't sound like paint-by-numbers. I've probably heard all the really obvious artists you could recommend in this vein. I posted pretty much this same request before and people just kept recommending me Autechre albums I hadn't heard yet. Which is fine, but I would really like to hear someone new.
Here's some ambient dub.

You also might want to check out Michael Rother's solo stuff, too. He was in Kraftwerk (briefly), Neu!, and Harmonia. Flammende Herzen is a good place to start, and it and the next two three albums feature Can's drummer.

I've listened to Lucifer Over London. Loved it.
However, this catalogue is insane. Where do I even start? And of course, anything related worth checking out.

Thunder Perfect Mind, Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre, and All The Pretty Little Horses (reissued as part of The Inmost Light trilogy nowadays) are where you should start.

To me it seems that Neu! kind of did their own thing back then, but I think Harmonia are somewhat close to their sound. Michael Rother was in both groups. Get Musik Von Harmonia. I haven't really listened to much else by them but that album is sick.

Deluxe is good, too.

Holy poo poo do I have to listen to all of them to stop being a plebian or is there a list of essentials somewhere?

Oh, I also remembered that I like jazz and blues a lot! Any tips for that?

Like someone else suggested, the best way for you to go about this is probably to start looking up "best of"/"essential"/whatever genre and decade lists. You'll find these everywhere, some are good, some are bad, don't worry about it. Just use the lists as a jumping-off point and start browsing around, don't take any of them too seriously.

Here are some examples:
Blues
Jazz
1970s
These are album lists. You can also find lists of artists and songs.

I don't like Maid Of Orleans either, but you've lost me on the Alan Partridge comparison. Architecture And Morality has some good stuff on it, though. The New Stone Age (post punk); Sealand and the title track (instrumentals); and She's Leaving, Souvenir, and The Beginning And The End (synthpop).

Gamelan, I've got no idea how to find more of this other than Youtube. Are there are any releases that are commonly accepted to exemplify the genre?

Nonesuch Records has reissued a bunch of their gamelan recordings from the 1970s. Get some from both Bali and Java, very different styles. That's about all I'm familiar with as far as recordings go, hopefully someone else can chime in because I'd also like to hear more gamelan.

I'm trying to find something that may or may not exist. I'd like to find a specific type of hybrid of rock/metal and blues/country/folk/southern rock. Something with riffs and solos and a gruff singer with soul. I've found some bands that come close but they always seem to swing father than I am looking for in either the metal(Down, Maylene & The Sons of Disaster, Opeth at times) or blues (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Civil Wars) direction, I'm looking for more of a 50/50 blend rather than a band of one genre with elements of the other. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't call the singer gruff, but try the Heavy Eyes.

Sleep isn't as "droney" (i.e. it's slightly more traditional metal) as Earth or Boris, but it's drat heavy, and you get lost in the riffs within a minute or two. If you like Dopesmoker, try out Electric Wizard's Dopethrone, though it's even more on the traditional side than Dopesmoker. And my personal favorite from Boris is Feedbacker, so try that if you haven't. And if you like Boris, it's only a small step to Sunn O))).

And if you like Dopesmoker, check out Om as well.
