You'll need this to dump the saves to SD and this to put them back on the Wii's hard drive. Keep in mind that if you're getting your Wii repaired by Nintendo, the act of using homebrew even to just back up your saves may void your warranty.

My warranty is already done, I'm paying to get the work done on my Wii
(I have a launch system that has the green dots/streaks, and it's just getting worse and more annoying)

Thanks for the info.

Can't you do this with just a regular SD-card like you do with the zelda save when you installed the homebrew channel?

Games with online functionality have saves that can't be copied to SD card without the tools listed above. This goes for Wiiware games too, which is a pest for games like Dr Mario as without homebrew you can't delete the game off your harddrive to reinstall later as it'll reset your Friend Code.

Thanks for the post; but is there a web browser for the wii that doesn't suck? The opera browser always lags and hangs and is not ideal for porn. Would a homebrew browser theoretically have flash & java?

This may be a joke, but the first thing I did when the web browser beta came out was search Google for some porn on my Wii. Something about getting pictures of naked chicks on my Nintendo just appealed to me. I know my mother didn't foresee that when I unwrapped the NES when I was 5.

Why is it that so many homebrew apps and games don't seem to support using USB keyboards, especially stuff like WiiDoom and WiiQuake? Official Nintendo stuff supports it just fine, even weird variations like my PS/2 compact keyboard that I have hooked up to a PS/2 keyboard/mouse converter and then plugged into the Wii.

Or do they actually support it, and just don't mention it? I'm waiting until I can get a copy of Twilight Princess for Wii so I can do the Twilight Hack stuff and load the homebrew channel.

If you want to play Doom or Quake with a keyboard then you should just play it on the computer. Most programs don't support USB keyboards because the majority of them don't need it. The few that do need it, support it.

You can also use Gecko OS's rebooter option to ignore the save copy flag, and then copy it like you would a normal Wii save. Since the Save Extractor and Installer require the game's disc, I think this is the only way to back up uncopyable saves from WiiWare games.

So according to the OP homebrew works on all versions of Wii software. Does that mean it works with the latest update at the moment and that I shouldn't update afterward? Will updating the Wii at all cause the Wii to delete or block the installation of homebrew? I'm just wondering because I'm thinking about installing homebrew on my Wii but I haven't updated my Wii in almost half a year.

Honestly, it's probably better if you didn't. Not everything works 100% on the newest firmware. Install the homebrew channel and then look up a way to get to version 3.2 (if you don't already have it), but don't update any more from there. Except maybe the Wii Shop channel if you want to buy stuff.

Im installing homebrew on my friends wii, and we keep getting error message

err = c1000003, reply = followed by a bunch of numbers

we tried this a few times with each save in the twilight hack (save 2 just freezes the game) and it keeps doing it, also the wii is deleting the twilight princess save hack whenever we reboot the system. I tried downloading the homebrew channel again but still the same error.

It's deleting the save because you're running 3.4, it does that, try not to reboot your Wii after using the hack until everything's all set up.
What's the problem exactly (i.e. where is it breaking, you mention using different saves but also redownloading the homebrew channel)?

For some reason, four out of five times when I go to launch the SNES emulator, it freezes up. It's an all-black screen with alot of numbers.. no clue what the error is from. I can just hit the reset button to get back to the homebrew channel and try again, but what's causing it to not load in the first place? Also, for MPlayer_CE, what exactly do I need to edit in order not to wait 5 minutes for it to read my SD card or whatever it's doing? One last complaint.. the Uno game is in spanish and even if it was in english, it wouldn't make sense anyways so don't download it. Oh yeah and that wiiradio freezes when you change the station one too many times.

Yeah, I get the same thing, about two thirds of the time. I'm thinking of either re-copying the newest version of the emulator, or maybe downgrading my Wii to an earlier version.

I know I'm probably making some stupid mistake that's causing this not to work, but I've been trying for the past hour with no success.

I'm trying to use the various Mplayers for the Wii and trying to get them to play an .mp4 off of my SD card. But whenever I do, it says that a DSI exception occurred. Any help?

I think they just blow with MP4s. I'm not sure I've ever successfully played one, although it's been a while since I've tried (gave up because of the said failures).

The newest version of Mplayer_CE is v0.21e which has even better SMB support and even has some debugging options you can turn on for troubleshooting.

The wii gives those errors after the twilight hack is used, it goes to command line mode and then starts to load boot.elf and then gives the error. so i re-downloaded the homebrew channel and put boot.elf back onto the root of the card and still got the same error. my friend says his wii has 3.4u.

I tried saving a actual zelda save onto the wii then copying the twilight hack over it and it didnt work either.

Didn't try any of the 0.2 series, but SMB ain't working in 0.3 either over here. :(

I've tried without password as my share doesn't require that, and also with my SMB login just to see if that worked better. When enabling the SMB debug on boot I think it just says smb1 error, but it's hard to see because the text doesn't fit on my old 4:3 TV. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Edit: YES, I got it working!! For other GNU/Linux users, this is what made my setup work:
security = user

[video]
path = /media/symlinks/video
available = yes
browsable = no
public = yes
writable = no

It was set to browseable before, so I think disabling that was what fixed things.

I did a bunch of stuff and Mplayer CE works now :dance:! I'm not sure what did it, got the latest DVDX thingy and uninstalled whatever IOS was there and it installed a new one and it worked? :confused: I had no clue what the hell I was doing, but Mplayer works now and is streaming Top Gear off my Mac as I type this.

It does stutter every once in a while though, I see a cache setting in mplayer.conf, but what are the other two, cache-min and cache-seek-min?

edit - just exited back to the file list part way through the video as I posted, not sure what happened there.
edit2 - forgot I had something else sucking up wireless bandwidth, seems to be ok now.

After getting SMB working in MPlayer CE, I also experienced the problems which japtor mentioned about it quitting to the file list after watching a little bit, and it happens with all videos. Wii was the only device on via WLAN so I can't solve it by disabling anything else.

So... then I took one of my USB flash drives and threw videos on that, watched a season of Harvey Birdman without much trouble. There was one file that'd quit partway through in the same fashion as over network, but I suspect that specific file had some encoding error or whatnot. It's a promising project, but I hope they fix the flaky SMB code so it works properly for streaming. Subtitle support is great.

I finally got MCE doing SMB, I think for some reason the shares in Windows had to be in the root of the drives. ???:( The new samba debug setting was helpful.

It works pretty well now, but even with 0.3 it seizes up every once in a while with incredibly loud buzzing.

Yeah I had the cut out problems even after stopping the other wireless stuff. I also noticed at a certain point it just wouldn't play or if I went back up the menus, wouldn't even connect to the shares unless I restarted the app. I posted it as a new issue on their site, hopefully someone else knows a fix.
