AuctionArms has a slightly better search engine but a worse layout and less variety. GB is actually pretty decent aside from just general aspie hobby idiots, rednecks, and people shamelessly exploiting the "Relist for free!" option for four years straight.

GPAuctions is supposed to be going online sometime this month and seems to be warmly recepted over at CalGuns and other forums I trust. You can read the sticky post about it on CalGuns, here. If it becomes half the site it claims it'll be, Gunbroker will be left far behind. If the site is actually good, it shouldn't have too much trouble getting people to wander over from Gunbroker and other firearm auction sites.

The long and the short of it is that Gunbroker has a decent interface, decent search, and attracts the largest audience by a wide margin. If you're buying on there it tends to be a TAD on the high end, price-wise, but that's mostly because the mouth-breathing hordes are also on there and tend to over pay for things. There are still good buys to be made if you know your poo poo and are patient, however. The same slight inflation due to popularity makes it the best place to list things, period. It's going to be seen by more people than in any other venue, and it's cheap/free to list. I'd love to see something better come along, but unless it's able to generate the kind of traffic that gunbroker has it will never be a serious competitor - that's what keeps Auction Arms from pulling ahead as well.

Granted, I've sold and bought more stuff on eBay, so perhaps I'm used to it, but I really like eBay's interface over Gunbroker's. Quite honestly, both eBay and Gunbroker have terrible interfaces, and there is room for a ton of improvement in both, particularly in how items are listed and displayed. Gunbroker has a problem right now where all their pages use POST instead of GET for php page variables when browsing the listings or looking at your watch page. For those that don't know, POST makes the variables hidden, but temporary data. GET makes the variables part of the url (like here on the forums), so that the data is always the same given that same url. Where the problem comes in, is if you leave a Gunbroker page open for more than 10-15 minutes, it loses the drat data and when you go to look at the next page of listings or check your watch list again, everything resets and you have to try and get back to where you were. Gunbroker also has a completely inadequate and crap search engine. The categories that items are listed in are different between browsing and using the search engine. For instance, you can't search the Curious & Relics category, which only lists C&R weapons, when using the search engine; you must search a similar but much broader category, Collector Firearms. That category also includes parts and memorabilia, which makes it hard to wade through the crap listings to get to what you want. Added: That's not to mention that the search engine also has a terrible parser that doesn't work correctly. For instance, .22lr in most search engines will also match ".22 lr"; using partial match searches in other engines will also add .22, .22L[ong], and ".22 short" to the list of matches. Gunbroker matches none of these, it will only match .22lr, even when you select the partial match checkbox. As another example, I searched for "leatherneck" a while back (a .22 rifle), with partial match turned on. It would only match "leatherneck"; on a cursory search using another term, I found more rifles that used "-leatherneck-", "leather neck" and so on in their titles. It failed to match any of them. Miso Beno posted:http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt...?Item=122760915 This has been going on for a long time. You can buy stamps to make every cartouche used by US inspectors or the various arsenals from about 1890 through the vietnam war. Basically you have to be able to judge the "quality" of the cartouche and tell the difference between how wood looks that was stamped 60 years ago and how it looks if it was stamped last week. And yes, I've seen fake Garand stocks at gunshows with fake cartouches on them.
