There is a fairly varied amount of subfields within it, too, ranging from all of the fields of classical linguistics with computers thrown in, to data mining, machine translation, text to speech, speech recognition, etc etc.

Is that strictly academic/research-oriented, or does that involve commercial software that's being implemented sometime soon?

Repealing the 17th Amendment isn't that crazy of an idea...there's a pretty solid case to be made that the intention of the legislatures electing Senators was to provide a voice for the states at the federal level (which makes sense in a federal system of government, as opposed to a unitary one.)

It still pisses me off when the Fox News crowd refers to the 17th Amendment as unconstitutional.
