So let me get this straight. The Beretta Neos is a Hi-Standard on the inside... ... with a cool space gun exterior? Why do I not own one of these?

It's not a copy of one of the "avoid, burn with fire" Hi-Standards, right? Ooooooh, it even comes with an optics rail. Now maybe I should go cancel that Buckmark order that my local gun store seems incapable of filling.

My only beef with my neos is the shape of the slide. It's shaped like a U with the open portion facing you. even when lubed up if I grip the slide by the serrations and try to operate it it locks up solid from the pressure of me squeezing it together. If I reach over the gun and use my index finger and thumb to grip the very front of the slide, then it works perfectly. Just a minor annoyance, really. Maybe it's just me. It shoots great though.

Anyone ever used a Marlin 795 for an appleseed (http://www.appleseedinfo.org/) shoot? I'm seeing the gun for 125 after rebate at gander mountain.. and 70 bucks for a set of aperture sights from tech-sights. If the gun isn't crap it seems like a much more economical version of the 10/22 build.

Wendigee posted:Anyone ever used a Marlin 795 for an appleseed (http://www.appleseedinfo.org/) shoot? I have one and I've shot an appleseed with it. It's a nice accurate .22 with a pretty much nonexistent aftermarket. No one makes hi-cap mags for it so Marlin 10 rounders are the largest available save some near impossible to find 15 rounders that aren't made anymore.

Yeah I'm not too concerned with the aftermarket. I really just want a simple aperture sight .22 for appleseed and marksmanship practice. Thanks for your input!

Wendigee posted:Anyone ever used a Marlin 795 for an appleseed (http://www.appleseedinfo.org/) shoot? Appleseed has actually gone from recommending the 10/22 as their LTR (Liberty Training Rifle) to the Marlin 795. It seems to be more accurate, plus the Marlin is easier to see if it's loaded or not. Visually seeing the magazine is easier with the Marlin, and the last shot bolt hold open. My Marlin 795 is purely setup as a LTR. It is by far the most fun for the money IMO.

Here at TFR, we use peer pressure to make other people buy guns, so the more compulsive gun purchasers feel validated. * edit - On a slightly relevant note, which wins for overall awesome - a Marlin 39a or a CZ 452 FS? I'm pretty much down to these two for my .22 rifle, and actually leaning towards the Marlin, since I want a CZ 550FS in 6.5 later down the road. Insane Totoro posted:So let me get this straight. The trigger is pretty poor out of the box, but http://hexidismal.awardspace.com/ < this fixes it up, so I'm told. Also there are many people who dislike Duramatics. I've already put a full 500 rounds or so through the Neos. In brief, here's a summary- The grip is very slim, but its also very comfortable to hold. I can switch pretty easilyt between a Luger style rake and an upright 1911 style grip, both are comfortable for me. If you like the stock Ruger mk1/2/3 grip, you'll like this. The swell in the back of the grip is nice. However, the Saftey digs into your thumb. Look at the position of it: in a high, tight hold, the lower part of the safety lever will dig in. It bugged me more the first time, for whatever reason it did not yesterday. The Trigger is pretty lackluster. Heavy takeup with a light break, with creep in the middle. We'll see if it smooths out, if it doesnt i'll just perform the trigger mod I just linked to. I've definately felt worse triggers, though. The Takedown, Integral Rail, and Ammo selection is easily the best features of the gun. Field Stripping is VERY easy, and doesnt mess up zero with irons or red dots. Also, speaking of Red Dots, use them. The Stock Neos sights are way too big. They were obscuring my target almost entirely at 15 yards. The Ammo Selection is great: I ran any and every kind of rimfire I had through it. Federal, CCI, Aquila, X-Pert, Winchester, Lapua SK, and some old oddballs, it ate them al like a champ. Everything but Remington, because I refuse to use that lovely stuff. Overall, its a very reliable gun, extremely fun, and once I mastered the trigger and started using my red dot, started getting great groups pretty regularly. Loading mags is a cinch, they are cheap to own, and for under $250, you really can't go wrong. I'm glad I got this instead of a 22/45. That said- In the future I would still like to own a basic Ruger Mk2 to accompany this. I like its performance, trigger, and aftermarket more. But for $220, this is a fantastic plinker.

Also it looks really cool like a seaQuest DSV laser pew pew pew sidearm. Now that I'm essentially locked into this purchase by ordering my cashback rewards, I have to start lusting after aftermarket accessories. I was recommended these optics by a friend. Good choice for the Neos? My concern is always that something will be too heavy on such a small pistol. I'm looking at something just to screw around with at informal bullseye shoots. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduc...ctNumber=179627
