Sweet thread, I love shooting .22, it's so cheap and fun and a great way to get in a lot more practice as well as train new shooters.

I have 2 .22s, an old Marlin Glenfield model 80 (magazine fed bolt action), and a military (air force?) M261 conversion bolt for my AR.

I love the 261 kit, it's very accurate (within 50 yards I can use the same zero) and I haven't had any problems with it so far. It also uses magazine inserts that fit into standard AR mags so if ciener's stick mags aren't your game, these are a cool option

pics:

the upside is that Black Dog Machine makes 25(?)rd "full size" magazines for these bolts, just like they do for the ciener kits, however the downside is that original parts and the units themselves can be a little hard to come by anymore, I beleive I got mine with 2 magazine inserts for around $150ish, YMMV.

I'm really wanting a .22lr pistol and I can't decide whether I want an SAA style or a conversion kit for my 1911 (marvel marvel marvel)

Also, what did ever happen to the WASR-22s? They were here for like, 20 minutes and then completely vanished. Anyone know if we'll ever see them again, or perhaps where one could find them? Has the price risen to "retarded" levels just like every other facet of the gun market right now? They're totally cool and I'd love to have one to jack around with

So, I saw that plinkerton .22 SAA mentioned above and have been going ga-ga over it, but can anyone tell me about the Heritage Rough Riders?

I dunno if it's sick or twisted but I'm really loving this one:

I read some reviews online and they seem to be pretty good for what they are, does anyone here have any experience with them?

From reading TFR I seem to recall heritage rough riders being bad.

I have searched around the internet and honestly can't find a bad review more than an occasional petty complaint, if there is anything detrimentally bad about them I would love to know it

But really I think I'll just go ahead and get it.

Got my toy today:

It's a Heritage Rough Rider in .22 LR/Magnum, 4 and 3/4ths barrel, and of course the totally pimp bird's head grip.

It is a very inexpensive gun, I got this one for $178 shipped BNIB from Bud's. I would have otherwise been quite wary of a gun that costs just barely the north side of "saturday night special" however after doing a little websearching, I found a refreshing majority of positive reviews. Many of them cited decently high round counts without problems, and a large portion of what negative reviews there were mostly had to do with the fact that it isn't a single six.

So understanding the caveat that it's a cheap gun, I ordered it last week and picked it up today. It is a very heavy little pistol; it appears that the grip frame is some sort of alloy/cast/pot metal with an enamel coating and some tool marks in the lesser visible areas. The rest all appears to be blued steel.

The grips were a nice surprise as every photo I'd seen of the gun showed grips that looked like they were cut out of plywood. These aren't anything like cocobolo or bubinga, but I'm not disgusted with them.

A very cool feature of the gun for the standard price is that it comes with both .22lr and .22magnum cylinders. A very cool deal and even though I'm not 100% sure on the real niche use of .22wmr, I definitely like the option to play with it. An even more interesting 'feature' having nothing to do with practicality is that the magnum cylinder isn't fluted. I thought that was sort of cool.

So hopefully by tomorrow I'll have had a chance to shoot the thing, but the first impression is a good one. It is a solid feeling gun and even though it is certainly not a single six, it seems like it will be a total blast to shoot.

big sizes

Shot 500rds of .22lr out of it and 50 of wmr today, spent about 3 hours at the range (most of this was loading and unloading)

It seems fairly accurate however my problems are that I'm not a very good pistol marksman, and the front sight is totally invisible when lined up on a black bullseye. I was still getting < 4" groups at 10y, and they seemed to all be where I was aiming, so the gun shoots pretty well in my opinion.

The .22wmr cylinder is fun as you gain no recoil but receive a huge muzzle flash and slightly bigger bang, but the stuff is almost as expensive as 9mm, and honestly it seemed like I was getting wider groups with it as compared to the LR.

But yeah so far I'm totally digging it and having a blast. It shot circles around my AR with the m261 kit, which I only got about 10rds total out of today because of godawful stovepiping (I am dearly hoping it was just the mag)

According to the 100% factual movie "Shooter" Bobby Lee Swagger(Marky Mark) can kill dudes dead from a boat at 200yds with a .22lr rifle.

And movies never lie.

possibly more accurate, to quote steve martin from My Blue Heaven

"Richie loved to use 22s because the bullets are small and they don't come out the other end like a 45, see, a 45 will blow a barn door out the back of your head and there's a lot of dry cleaning involved, but a 22 will just rattle around like Pac-Man until you're dead."

how are the ruger SR22's? one just popped up on a local forum, its tempting.

Out of curiosity, what is the appeal of one of these over a MkI/II/III? I'm generally curious because I really don't see what this pistol does that Ruger's other rimfire pistols don't already do spectacularly.

Also, is there a hivemind consensus on the Marlin 795? I've seen a couple around here for DIRT cheap, and I've found some very favorable reviews across the net, but I want to make sure that there isn't something I'm missing. I mean I know it has a slim aftermarket, but it'd be my shooting rabbits/training newbies gun.

thought about that. i'd love to get my hands on a mkIII. maybe i'll just hold out for one of those.

Some cursory checking of the internet gun dealers (Bud's Gunshop and Impact Weapons) show that the SR22 and, for instance, the MkIII 22/45 with threaded barrel and two accessory rails are just about neck and neck at the ~$330 price point, brand new. I mean it all depends on what kind of plans you have for the thing, but since price is basically a non issue, you're going to be able to do more (and likely shoot better because of the fixed barrel) with the mkIII. Or do what everyone else in this thread has done and get a Buckmark

It looks like a retarded SCAR. And SCARs aren't exactly great looking, so that's saying something. Plus the grip is integral to the lower, the barrel isn't threaded, and it appears that the stock doesn't collapse (though it appears to fold.)

I mean this is the point where you should really start weighing this against the cost/effort of buying a 10/22 and an airsoft SCAR and having a little DIY fun with it. You'd likely have a better product.

There is no .22LR in Kansas City/Topeka either. Whats the deal?

Last week the Lawrence Wal Mart had a few boxes of .22lr (federal) and WWB 9mm in stock, so I bought a couple of each. The department manager was just as surprised as I was that they were there at all.

So what's the deal with Heritage Arms? Total poo poo I presume?

I've noticed a bunch of their Rough Rider Single Action .22LR pistols showing up in GB lately for really loving cheap (We're talking drop gun prices) and assumed they're crap, but wanted to double check.

Here's my review on my Rough Rider long story short, they're fun enough to be worth what you'd spend on a particularly rowdy night out on the town but aren't remarkably good guns beyond plinking fun.
