I would just like to mention that I'm reading Elmer Keith's 1955 book on sixguns and he emphasizes several times that one should start out with a .22 and then work up to larger guns, and as soon as one starts having trouble with larger guns, to go back to the .22 for a while.

I mean, duh, but I thought it was pretty progressive for the time.

This is my other 22.

It is a Remington model 12 made in 1912. This model has a round barrel, as opposed to some of the hexagon barreled models you sometimes see. It will feed and shoot every length of 22 (not mag).

That is sweet. A coworker of mine has one with the heavy "target" octagon barrel. From a comfortable rest position, we can stack rounds in a postage-stamp-sized area at 25 yards all day long. And he paid $9 for it at a yard sale.

Holy crap. The octagon-barreled ones are collectible, worth a good bunch.
Winchester ones are worth more I think, name recognition I guess.

This one's pretty ratty-looking, but it shoots well. I'll see if I can get a picture of it.

My approach, therefore, has been pragmatic: load 5 in each and avoid the first three rounds out of a full mag that routinely give me problems. I just chalk it up to having an autoloading rimfire pistol trying to cycle subsonic rounds that were probably meant for a rifle. If absolute functionality AND accuracy was a key consideration, I'd probably use CCI Green Tag or Pistol Match, which is actually more accurate for me and doesn't give me any functionality issues.

That's pretty much it, according to the guys at the rimfire club here. Wolf is great for bolt actions, revolvers, etc. but can be underpowered in semis.

I saw one at the range and it seemed pretty cool to me. Nice solid looks, decent sights for shooting at 25m. I didn' get to shoot it, sadly.

They are in the 180-220 Euro range here, used of course- pretty inexpensive. Does that low price mean low quality?

I like them. The trigger is a little heavy but it's crisp. The gun has a unique magazine catch. The low bore axis means very little muzzle rise.

Sure, you couldn't order an extra one for your old buddy, infrared35.

Yeah, this was a while ago - 2007. I went to the CMP South store and the 40Xs were the only thing they actually had in stock. And they were friggin' expensive.

I am half tempted to just buy a barreled action, but I know what a pain in the rear end it would be to find a proper stock, bolt, and trigger group. Not to mention it would probably end up costing $800 in the end doing it that way anyway.

Not surprisingly, a P220 slide and barrel will not go on a P226 frame. Interestingly, a .22 conversion kit for P220 does fit on the P226. However, it doesn't appear that it would work. It cycles by hand fine, but it doesn't look like the hammer actually reaches the firing pin. Just thought y'all would like to know.

Just took the P220 with .22 conversion kit for a test drive. The previous owner reported some function issues with it, namely failures to go back to battery. This appears to be a common complaint with the P220 kit for some reason. I am happy to say that it ran fine with CCI and Federal ammo. No function problems at all in 60 rounds and I got all my rounds into thumbnail-sized groups at three yards.

infrared35
Jan 12, 2005

After about a hundred rounds (most of Federal HPs) I finally started to get some feed problems with the P220 conversion kit, almost always on the second round in the mag. I suspect the lube may have been running a little thin at that point, and the gun was definitely getting dirty. I'll have to try it with a couple different brands of ammo. It was cycling the slide enough to eject the empty casing but it wasn't going back far enough to pick up a new round. I've cleaned it and re-lubed it in anticipation of the weekend.

I took the P220 conversion kit out and fired ten rounds each of seven different types of ammo. I had Wolf, Remington subsonic, CCI (whatever their standard silver box stuff is), Federal copper-clad HPs, Federal match pistol, Aguila SSS, and Winchester match pistol. Everything fired fine... once I figured out that my occasional failures to cycle were probably caused by my support thumb resting against the slide a little. I can get away with it on a centerfire, but the .22 kit is a lot more sensitive to things rubbing on the slide (hurr!). Everything was nice and accurate, except the SSS. I don't know what twist you're supposed to use with those heavy-rear end bullets, but I went from sub-thumbnail-sized groups at three yards with all the other types to a five-inch group where all the bullets keyholed. Yeah, at three yards.
