No it was definitely an arch-lich. I zapped a wand I thought was cold at a monster behind a boulder in the pit corridor. (It was polymorph.)

I was trying to plug the last three pits so I could stand on the upstairs and beat him to death, with Magicbane and magic resistance I was taking no damage on most of his appearances. I figured I could outlast him.

Then he did ~40 damage in two psi bolts :smith:
