As I say to everyone that asks, the first season is some of the most complete, epic TV that there has ever been or ever will be. If The Wire didn't exist, this would be the pinnacle of television thus far. Season two drags out a bit different and takes a while to rolling, and three is good, but leaves far too many things hanging, due to being canceled by the time it was already filmed. Also, McShane is a retardedly good actor when he wants to be. Mu Zeta posted:Only thing I disliked about Deadwood is they never explain some of the terms they use. How am I supposed to know what hooplehead or the Pinkertons were? I had to look it up. Yes, what a chore it is to have to learn something and not have it explained straight away.

I think Californication does the light-hearted-kind-of-broken-family thing quite well, even if it is a fantasy in its own right. That said, I didn't really like how little Doc was used in season three, either. Brad Dourif is a criminally underrated actor. Also, the comment regarding the hats is accurate. I liked how it was made so you could recognize all the main characters by their hats alone. Fuckin' millinery samples

Uh, he did install one of his cronies, and it turned out poo poo. He wants Seth in there, because he knows he's principled and will actually care about the job. And because of that, he knows exactly how to twist him and coddle him to further his (Al's) own ends. e: Besides, it looks good to all those hoopleheads and the cocksuckers over in Yankton. ^^^^ Thank you. It may have gotten over-indulgent, but the only incomprehensible fucker was Langrishe, and that was understandable since the character was a huge fop actor. Faikon posted:If you are saying that another character such as Seth would have ruined the series/made you stop watching, then I agree 100%. I had to force myself through the first couple of episodes because I was having such a big problem with him. No, I think he's saying if they had someone else play Seth, it would have been better. Myself, I can see where the dislike comes from, but Seth's just the entry point (I still can't stand the first 10 minutes of the first ep) and all the other characters are so much better, that I just don't care. Re: Cy. I think they showed that just to cement how loving crazy he is compared to Al. Someone in a past thread said something like "Cy is a man without a country," which I think fits. Al would have just told the kids they could go before stabbing them in the gut, so at least they wouldn't have had it drawn out. Cy is in it for the money, but has no plans for it, and no long-term goals like Al, so all he has is his taunting and tormenting to make himself feel big.

Astroman posted:history Godamn that would have been a good season and a half, with the last episode being sort of a coda of 'what happened to everyone'. Would they have rewritten it so Sol and Trixie stayed together? What about all the side folks/inventions like EB and Dan, Woo and Charlie, Doc and Merrick? I've a mind to write some historical fan-fiction as it is. fake e: looking up stuff on IMDB, an alternate title for Argentina is "pueblo corrupto." gently caress that's funny.

Yes, all you can say about Keith Carradine is that he was on Dexter. ... I always tell myself to start a rewatch of the series, but then I think about it and get too sad. Even now, I was debating the gf about how strong/not-strong the female characters are in Deadwood, compared to other tv, and the urge to watch came on hard. It's just such a well-done show, and resonates out to different areas that it's hard not to think about whenever discussions about good stories comes up. Yeah, the doc went through the Civil War, there's a few mentions here and there, but his monologue there is primarily about that and the poo poo he saw.Jerusalem posted:That final scene in Season 1 (from memory) where Cochran is so relieved and happy, believing that God heard his prayers, and dances with Jewel while Al stands above watching them is just tremendous. It's one of my favorite tv endings ever, and because everything from the season has been so well told and satisfactorily wrapped up, you could just imagine everyone living their lives from that point on without any other episodes to continue the story. Season 1 is p much the best story tv has ever had (in a single season).

For me, Deadwood was about how history builds groups of people and institutions and towns, layered in Western trappings, and The Wire is about how eventually, those things fragment and either become devoured/bloated/replaced by the forces that were originally meant to be dealt with. I'm sure you could do a great compare/contrast on the social situations in both of them. E: I mean poo poo, both of them have the drug trade, the law, civilian life, the media, etc.

gently caress me, this is just reminding me that, for a time (in 2004, I had to go look it up), HBO's schedule looked like this: Deadwood The Wire Carnivale The Sopranos Six Feet Under (plus the comedies like Curb and Entourage) All in one year. Fuuuuck. Also, for all you Parks and Rec fans, during my summer rewatch of Deadwood, the lady noticed something about Tom Mason in episode 2: And because she's freakishly good at picking out actors, lo and behold, he was indeed Nick Offerman.
