Joffrey did whatever the hell he wanted anyway and never had much time for politics. He would have been just as uncontrollable as an adult than as a child. The only difference I can spot is that as a 16 or 17 year-old he would probably have raped Sansa. Tommen on the other hand is a different story all together. Cersei was constantly controlling him, and keeping him away from any of the governmental aspects of being a king, even when he showed an interest in doing so. It would never have worked if Tommen had been older.

Sansa could be a terribly naive 20 year old and it would make zero difference aside from the period scene, Rob and Jon, same, Bran acts way older than he is, Joffery could any spoiled rich kid, Dany let's not even go there   . I guess you could make the case for Arya acting the age she is in the books, but that's about it.

Joffrey's age is probably irrelevant overall, but his being so young does add to his character I think. It makes him seem more sadistic overall, the vicious child angle. Make him older and he may be looked at as just an evil guy with evil intentions rather than it being a fundamental part of his personality. Still it can probably be dealt with well enough and would let them drop the need for a child actor.

I imagine Catelyn could be scaled up to 40-45 years if Robb and Jon need to be scaled up too, but Cersei will never be anything in my mind other than the kind of soccer mom you see at Wal*Mart who obviously was cheerleader captain in high school and married two months after graduation to the team quarterback, then squeezed out the first kid seven months after the wedding. She also harasses the zit-faced teen employee in the pet aisle about how she needs that EXACT oscar to go in her spoiled son's two gallon fishtank, while on the phone with her dad about dumping off the kids and going to Vegas for the weekend. (With daddy's money--not her own, of course.)

Honestly, I always had a hard time keeping all the ages straight as well. I've never been good at knowing the passage of time in books, and as such the same goes for these. I tended to place their ages (well, at least the kids') more towards how they behaved as opposed to what was written. So, generally, characters acted older than their given age, so I think it might be ok for them to be older. I also think the show might do better if they were older. It was always a nasty shock to be reminded that Dany was like 13.

Sansa being older means she's married, probably has a few kids, and is basically Catelyn with her stupidity. Rob being older means he's already got his fathers men behind him, already proven himself in battle.... Arya being older means that she's just some 18 year old swordfighting chick. She's no longer an 8 year old that is tough as nails, no longer an 8 year old that gets by on her own luck and asskickingness. Her entire character is a piece of poo poo now. While this is a good point, I'm pretty sure we're (those who feel that ages could be fudged) are talking about a couple of years, not making them all adults. If you start a series with actual 11-15 year olds, they'll grow up quick and it'll look stupid, whereas if you get slightly older people to play teenagers, you can keep filming them for years, e.g. Buffy.

Nobody said age everyone by 15 years, were talking a handful, <5 or so, to make the whole thing more believable.
