Hey I'll be honest, in high school I wanted someone to make a set of soap shoes with heelies built-in but also in high school I never went further than the fridge from my computer.

Is there a way to tell a decent penny style skateboard from a cheap toy other than brand or is Penny literally the only decent brand?

Funbox Dist. penny killer if you want nice. Whatever if you want a fun little beater.

Wowporn posted:Is there a way to tell a decent penny style skateboard from a cheap toy other than brand or is Penny literally the only decent brand? I really like my Stereo, but the bushings and bearing in it were definitely worse than the stock Penny ones. Was a cheap and easy fix that I would have done regardless, but still worth pointing out. Also, the Penny decks have a little more flex to them, but I actually bought the Stereo because of it being slightly more stiff.

Everybody and their dog makes a mini cruiser competitor to the penny now. As long as you don't go to stupid places like Wal-Mart or the mall and buy a complete you'll do fine.

Cool, I just want something that's small and can go over the lovely sidewalks in my neighborhood better than a regular deck with tiny 50mm wheels. I'll drop by the nearest bikeshop or something.

Board meeting is pretty much the best event ever. I hope all the kooks in this thread get to come to this one day... That's a thousand skaters mobbing Canada's busiest roads.

Dusted my old (also mall bought ) skateboard just to cruise around since I am terrible doing tricks (never learnt how to ollie ) , is there a big difference between a proper cruiser board or I can throw some soft big wheels in my normal deck and be done with it?

Definitely is NOT a race for 99% of people there. Its a giant loving party throughout all of the lower end of Manhattan. Skaters everywhere, and a bunch of real afterparties at bars, houses/apartments, etc. The whole weekend is the event, not just the Bomb itself. I know its different from Board Meetings, but its the same idea in a different area with a different feel, I guess. I might see about going into the city for it again this year, its just a train ride for me (Long Island)

Wow, it took me over ten years to bother learning powerslides, and drat, it's one of the most fun things to do on a skateboard! I wasn't really safe on them until I tried to do a powerslide to fakie in the rain while doing a hillbomb and slammed like poo poo. After that I became fearless. POWEEERSLIDEEES.

My old board is garbage and I want a new one. I just use it to ride around, ride bowls, do the odd kickflip/ollie and grind. I'm not looking for anything special at all. What's the cheapest I can get a serviceable board for? recommendations are welcome. Also I just saw this on TV and decided to .gif it so I'll drop it here.

Not being a dick but if you can ollie, kick flip and grind your current board you must have an idea about what you want/need next and how much it will cost.
|
# ? Sep 22, 2014 12:43 |
|
Just look for blanks from companies known for not making poo poo I guess? If you're riding bowls you probably don't want to go much lower in quality range than that.

I'm expecting to probably pay $130ish for my next build.

130 seems high to me, especially if he's consciously looking to stay cheap. 130 to me says you're going for a pro deck and some premium lightening in your trucks and wheels. Or some longboard poo poo.
|
# ? Sep 22, 2014 18:30 |
|
Oh yeah, definitely high. The last time I put together a fantasy shopping list it ended up around there. Seems like you can get a totally setup for $80 or less. I've found that the difference between a poo poo or worn deck and good fresh one can be about 6-8" of pop though, for me at least.
|
# ? Sep 22, 2014 19:47 |
|
$130 definitely seems high for a street setup. It sure is good that they're cheaper than longboards, cause at least when you drop $130 on a longboard deck, its gonna last a loooot longer. I will admit to paying about that much for a single (slalom) truck in the past, though.
|
# ? Sep 22, 2014 20:12 |
|
Good deck, tensors, Swiss bones, ricta wheels and you're already past $130. poo poo got expensive at some point.
|
# ? Sep 22, 2014 20:29 |
|
Lets see... DH deck $100-200, trucks around $50 (or $150+ for precisions), wheels $40-50, bushings + hardware + grip + bearing + all those other random bits can be another $40-50... Longboards can get pricey depending what you buy. That said, you can easily spend a lot less by getting a less pricey deck and by less about bushings and poo poo.

What's up my neighbours We're looking for LED array lights for extending our sessions into the night. Our canadian winters set in last week and darkness happens shortly after 7pm now which blows for us old men who have to work till 6. Is there anything that runs as standard for this kind of use? I'm looking for something small, on the cheap side (so that we can break them twice nightly) and can be recharged via USB AND outlet. I don't need adjustable brightness, just "loving bright" will do. We had a photographer friend come out last night with his pair and we managed to jam at the park until 10 but he can't be with us every session. edit: This is what he had with him http://www.vistek.ca/store/ProVideoOnCameraLighting/269384/led-go-cnb150-led-on-camera-light-wsony-type-f550-battery-battery.aspx In other exciting news I learned both sides 5-0 pivot/stall, backside pivot into smith, all kinds of 50, smith and 5-0 grinds, hurricanes, did a couple accidental disasters. Front rocks come tonight, I can feel it. Still don't ride fakie gently caress fakie (so scary!!!) I've passed some kind of plateau I've been on all summer. Feels good to crush it at the park. Hey skateboard thread, I'm beginning to think that maybe this skateboarding poo poo is for me. Just turned 30, still as lanky and uncoordinated as I was in high school. Had a board I'd acquired in my late teens, though I'd promptly stopped trying to learn how to use it because I was a lazy loving teenager and it was "too hard." Something got into me last week (possibly an early-mid-life crisis), and I decided to refurb it. Ended up acquiring the parts for a whole new board at the local skate shop and assembling the thing myself. It's been five or six days now, and I've been utterly unable to stop myself from riding. I'll do things like go out for food simply as an excuse to skate somewhere. Where I'd once go months with minimal physical activity, I now find myself skating to the point of exhaustion and wanting to keep going. Simple things that those of you who've skated since your age only had one digit likely take for granted feel like enormous accomplishments: maintaining balance on loose trucks, pulling tighter turns, feeling more and more comfortable on downward slopes at higher speeds, pulling tiny tic-tacs, doing simple manuals over cracks in the pavement, and getting measurably better at these things every day. It's helped renew this sense of youthful exuberance in me that I honestly thought was just gone as an effect of aging. I'm excited by the endless depth of things to keep learning and continue getting better at. I can't imagine this ever feeling rote or repetitive. tl;dr: I'm getting old, and just now discovering that skating is loving awesome. If you're on the fence about starting, stop pussyfooting around and put some drat wheels to asphalt. You will absolutely not regret it.

Went to a skate park for the first time since I was 18 (now 28). Skateboarding is not like riding a bike as far as just getting back at it. I really wanted to be snowboarding but it is crazy warm in Colorado still. Managed ride around on some ramps, did a couple rocker to fakie, landed 2 backside boardslides, got a few nose slides on but not landed. My shins are nicely bruised from getting smacked by the board. Also took a nice slam coming off the rail to my hip (we will see what that looks like in the AM...). All in all fun and I felt really really old compared to all the 13-20 year old kids.

After walking past a small park every day on the way home from work for a year, last month I went on craigslist and bought a $20 used board and have been loving every minute I'm on it. Bad timing as I'm about to do some extended travelling before moving overseas, but I know one of the first things I purchase when I get settled down will be a new board. Skateboarding owns and you're not too old to start.

That video is confusing because at the top when he's describing his badass wheelbarrow you're like "this is a joke" but then he flip-bluntslides a rail and apparently only keeps footage where he "rolls away" clean and you're like...wait...is he for real?

Anyone who's not all up in top guys' business at the moment should go watch "The Motivation" on netflix, it's a documentary about Street League and the top 8 guys from...2012 I think? The profiles on their lives are the meat of the matter but if you don't already know how that event turns out I would suggest watching up to that point and then switching to a youtube replay of the actual finals. Nyjah doesn't know how to pay an electric bill, his life is kind of hosed up and now I know why he disappeared for a while. Luan Oliviera has a hetero life partner who saved him from the Favela's. Chris Cole isn't sure if he's old (he's old) but got his championship in the years following. Chaz Ortiz is consistent, and that's about it. I somehow had no idea that Ryan Sheckler was...well, Ryan Sheckler. I assumed he just had a girl-crush army, not a reality show based girl-crush loving DEATH STAR. I've picked up skateboarding recently, in september. So far it's been a blast, but I need some media to inspire me and teach me more about the sport as a whole so I can make the most of my time away from the board. What can you guys recommend? Videos, books, and so on. I have no idea of where to start.
