Did Gilroy actually know for sure that Vic killed terry?

soggybagel posted:I don't think Season 1 was the weakest. I really don't like Season 4. I mean, yes lots of things of legitimate substance occurred, but it still ultimately felt like it was spinning wheels. I never really liked Glenn Close's character either. I know its cliche to always have a captain that basically is antagonistic to Vic, but I never bought Close's character nor did I like how they basically abruptly closed out her story arc. I agree that season 1 was good, I think there's too much of a tendency to instantly rate serial TV over episodic TV these days, regardless of the quality of each. I thought The Shield was best as an absolutely breakneck episodic show with ongoing plot threads, and not the slog it turned into in seasons 6 and 7. Season 5 did kick rear end, though, though it was kinda the beginning of the end as far as pacing went.

Until the last season (and really, just for the newspaper characters), it also had significantly better characterization, though that's more a failing (possibly the only one!) of The Shield that The Wire doesn't fall into. I loved The Shield, but I've always thought the entire non-Strike-Team cast, with the possible exception of Claudette, were progressively less well-written as the show went along (can anyone seriously tell me what Julian's point of existence was after season 4? didn't the actor hate playing a gay guy or something?)

Season 2 is fantastic. Actually, all the early seasons are fantastic, I can't think of a single bad Shield episode before seasons six and seven.

Wartime Consigliere posted:I didn't like that, it felt wrong for the Strike Team to be split up. I've always thought the Strike Team were the least interesting characters on the show, so I didn't mind that they were trying different things with them. Julian's character arc in S4 is a complete bust, though, it seemed pretty obvious that the writers had no clue what to do with him at that point.

Breaking Bad's been hitting the ultra-fast-paced drama itch that I've had since The Shield ended, you've tried that yet?

Second season's legit one of my favorite single seasons ever, right up with Sopranos S5, Shield S5, and Wire S2. Watch the hell out of it.

Yeah even though I prefer episodic Shield, season 5 was loving great I'm not at all a fan of the last two seasons, interested in what you think.

Julian became utterly useless after S4 or so, and I never liked what they did to Dutch, him and Billings never seemed to work well in my view.
