I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway. I just bought this game, am I going to hate myself in the morning?

il serpente cosmico posted:Finally got around to playing this last night. I'm really, really terrible. I read a very brief beginners' guide for a little bit of guidance. Eventually I settled on a thief, went through the tutorial area, made it to the nexus, and started 1-1. After dying a half dozen times on the way to get the cling ring, I decided to put it down. I'm guessing this is a standard newbie experience with this game--are there any general tips anyone can give me regarding combat? Or is it pretty normal to die at the beginning like this while you're figuring out combat? I'm fine fighting the zombie guys 1-on-1, but groups of them give me a lot of trouble. One will always jump in from where I'm not expecting it. I'm guessing that luring them into fighting 1-on-1 is a big part of it? I picked up the game a couple of weeks ago and had the same humbling, soul-crushing experience. You will get better; after I put it down for a few days and came back I was able to get through 1-1. I'm playing as a wanderer for the extra dexterity and drops. Just get murdered until you want to kill everything IRL within a 50 yard radius, then put it down and come back later. Also you're playing at Pure Black due to a server event, so it's harder than normal.

Sheep-Goats posted:Also you don't have to do world 1 first. Try skipping around. World 4 in particular has a few great early finds (if you can figure out how to kill skeletons). I took care of this problem by picking up a smashing weapon that is early in another level (5-1 I think, but it's the morning star listed in the wiki). Made that sooo much easier. Even though I still die all the loving time, it only takes a couple hits with the mace as opposed to nearly a dozen with a sword or spear. So if you're a hopless idiot like me the wiki is your friend.

Sheep-Goats posted:I'd suggest avoiding the wiki for your first playthrough. The game is so well made that really the fun is in finding out how to do what you want to do in it. There's always a way and an open mind and experimentation will get you there. Did I mention I'm terrible at this game? Because I'm somewhere between comatose and clinically retarded when it comes to Demon's Souls. Even knowing that you have to do X to kill the big monster will probably result in my doing Y and dying horribly anyway.

I was doing well (for me anyway) last night in the Tower of Latria. Then I fell to my death trying to kill a crystal gecko at the bottom of the level. Which led to this series of expressions: I must be getting used to it.

I've tried the latter since I saw it in a speed run but he killed me before I could get up. 4-2 gave me more shitfits than any other area in the game. If you've got your Dragon Longsword it works a treat on Reapers. 2 hits and done, pretty much.

Does the sudden change from white to black cause Ed to disappear? I had that happen to me once already on a playthrough so I couldn't get all my weapons I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Probably the creepiest place, especially 3-2.

I loaned my disc to my sister's boyfriend a while back, but since this was free on PS+ I downloaded it so I could play until he's done. I had a lot of trouble my first time through, this playthrough the only times I've died (not counting in co-op because people are bad and get me killed by standing up my rear end) is suiciding in the Nexus so I can go help bros with bosses.

What level are you? I have a guy at around 50 (I think) that I've just been cooping with. If you're +/- 10 to me I can blue phantom for you. Takes some coordination but not impossible.

Snix posted:I picked it up because I couldn't find a copy of The Last of Us, and I was interested in Demon's Souls after beating Dark Souls. I'm in the mine level, and I was at the lava section with the Bear Bugs or whatever they're called, and Patches. I kill a bear bug, and then back away so it doesn't explode on me. However, I didn't back up quite far enough, meaning that I get knocked off and fall to my death. So, whatever, I'll just retrieve my body. At the part of the mines where you have to fall onto different platforms, I noticed an item on a platform that I had missed the first time. I get it, but then find myself stranded. The nearest platform is quite a distance, but my only option is to roll to it. Of course, I don't roll quite far enough and fall to my death, meaning that the 20,000+ souls I had when I died from the explosion are gone. It doesn't help that every drop in the section where you fall onto platforms takes some of your health. Now I'm completely out of grass and those things that get you out of Soul Form.

Snix posted:Alright, you guys are probably going to thing I'm a pansy, especially because I've heard this was one of the easiest bosses in the game, but I just died by the Fool's Idol more times than I can count. I beat her after two or three tries, but I didn't kill the guy who keeps spawning her, so now I have to kill her again, and for some reason I just can't do it. It's the loving traps. They keep spawning right where I'm at, and keeping me there more than once. Plus, it's pretty hard to note the exact location of every trap while trying not to get his by spell or hiding behind a pillar. That, and stray shots from the clones that are starting to screw me over when I least expect. And the lock-on system making GBS threads all over itself. I don't remember Dark Souls ever being this bad. Keep moving and engage her at range if possible. If you stay to the sides you don't have to worry about the traps. Pick up a bow or soul arrow for a few souls and go to town.

I love being summoned for that fight. Dress like an idiot with a useless weapon and let the other person wail on you for a free win, unless they actually act like they want to fight. In which case free pvp training session!

The other great thing about that fight is that half the time the guy dies to the BP mindflayer before he even reaches you.
