Just picked up a copy myself, and loving it so far. Fighting Phalanx was massively rewarding - the first time I saw him I was like "oh poo poo, how is this ever going to work" and just died horribly - then a few deaths later I got into it and was rolling around like a madman. So satisfying when he went down.

FYI (shameless plug) I am currently in Asia, and coming back to Europe next week. If anyone wants a copy, PM me and I'll try and help you out.

I don't think so at all. Her voice acting is really well done and her accent is clearly northern European. Like Dominic White said, most of her lines are chants or prayers.

I think the voice acting in this game is some of the best I've heard since System Shock 2.

I'd agree with this - all aside from the monumental. Why they made him randomly drop all the e's in past particles (e.g. "releas'd" instead of "released") in the subtitles is beyond me. His voice is remarkably clear cut, and then you can sort of feel him forcing in these anarchic terms ("mankind's memory is o'er short" being one of the worst offenders).

That said, the rest is awesome. And I love little touches - like if you run away from Stockpile Thomas instead of exiting the chat properly, he shouts after you, and next time you return he asks you what it was all about. Genius!

BTW, have now finally finished reading through the thread (although I skipped all the spoilered sections as I'm only just up to Flamelurker, and don't want to ruin the surprises ahead). Can't wait to find out what the organ music in the Nexus is all about.

Q: Some people are advocating killing all the Nexus NPCs before starting a New Game+, as they all come back. Is it fairly clear when I'm about to end the game, or does it have a 'final boss +1' that will surprise me? Appreciate it's hard to answer that without spoiling it a little...

Also, as I mentioned before, I just got back from HK and have brought a few copies with me. Am based in the UK but can post. Let me know if you want one (some people seemed to be interested a couple of pages back, don't know if they still are).

Yup, and then killing Miralda resets it to neutral - which I totally didn't appreciate as I was quite enjoying my dragon-free paradise.

Is Policenaut still checking this thread?

Just re-read it, and the OP still says 'unknown NA release', which needs updating.

Also, although I know this is of minimal interest to US goons (the majority), but a mate and I are selling some copies in the UK. Link to ebay auction http://www.snipurl.com/dsebay - but goons are probably best off contacting me directly (PM or rabjohnson at hotmail dot com), for a discount. Would be much appreciative if that could be added as well. We have about 30 copies, so shouldn't run out soon. Happy to post to mainland Europe as well, although that might cost a little more...

I'm not entirely certain my constant rolling and occasional blasts will hold up so well a second time around.

I've been determined from the start to kill him 'properly' i.e. without getting him stuck and exploiting pathing problems. 40+ deaths I've had to go back to world 1 to farm up more grass - that's ignoring all the times I died trying to descend to him by jumping from platform to platform in that shaft of doom.

I still can't work out if I'm best off sporting my fluted armour and flame shield and trying to go toe-to-toe, or just keep sprinting from one end to the other and Soul Arrowing whenever I get the chance. Would love to know if anyone's got any decent advice on one being superior.

I've beaten him to death in Fluted and blasted him to death with Soul Arrow. If you have the ability to, go the Soul Arrow route. Ignoring the times I tried to get him stuck, I only died once. And that's because I chose to try and get another blast off instead of rolling out of the way and healing up. Just keep moving and make damned sure that you're "safe" when trying to blast him. The Ring of Magical Sharpness helps here. If you're feeling ballsy/suicidal, so does the Kris from 4-1. Makes much quicker work of him if you really think you can keep out of his attacks and have a lot of Magic points behind you.

The melee route is a lot more painful. I used a Winged Spear, Purple Dragon shield, and Fluted armor. Probably not something I'm going to rush to do again.

Cheers, I'll have another crack in the morning with that. Don't know where I kept going wrong - probably being over keen to blast him even when he was about to rush me. Will report back!

Two questions.

Firstly, does anyone have any figures on how much white/black tendency move enemy/boss HP levels? I downed the Red Dragon in my first run through on neutral (defeated Phalanx then forgot to suicide in the Nexus so back to neutral), and counted a total of 1440 damage done (last hit was for 20, so he has between 1421 and 1440 HP). However, I guess this is of limited usefulness considering most players will be +1 white at this point, how much does that move things?

Also, I'm looking into upgrades but nervous of going down the specialisation paths without much idea of what I'm doing - and there are so many different weapons on the wiki that I'm finding it tough getting an overview. What's the consensus on things that are worth making into Crescent/Dragon/Quality etc? I'm thinking:

Quality - Winged Spear? I have no idea
Crushing - Guillotine Axe, largely because it sounds cool.
Sharp - Winged Spear again, based on the wiki (it has the stats listed so I assume it's a good choice, also I have loads of them)
Tearing - Scimitar largely because I'm now quite experienced with it and love it. But if Mercury stacks (see below) then I guess Kilij?
Dragon - Knight Sword seems to give the best stats
Mercury - I'd love this on the Scimitar if it stacks with bleed damage. If not, Secret Dagger, but again, because it sounds cool rather than based on clever sums
Fatal - Mailbreaker? I assume extra crit is for backstabs and the like?
Moon - less relevant for me as I'm primarily melee, so I think this will definitely be for New Game +(+), but I like the sound of a Moon Bastard Sword.
Crescent - the Uchigatana seems to be the logical choice based on stats. I don't suppose this is the same as the Kris Knife i.e. boosts the damage of your magic as well?
Blessed - Knight Sword based on stats, but a Blessed Mace sounds a bit cooler
Vicious - I guess has the be the Vicious Compound Longbow
Dark - Purple Flame all the way.

I suppose for completeness I should state that I'm working on a [b]Scimitar +10
and [b]Mirdan Hammer +10
for the hard/sharp stone trophies as well.

Any tips/hints?

Quality - Winged Spear? I have no idea
Crushing - Guillotine Axe, largely because it sounds cool.

Tearing - Scimitar largely because I'm now quite experienced with it and love it. But if Mercury stacks (see below) then I guess Kilij?
Dragon - Morning Star - for skeleton bashing, anything that makes them easy is good news, given how much farming seems to be based around them.
Mercury - I'd love this on the Scimitar if it stacks with bleed damage. If not, Secret Dagger, but again, because it sounds cool rather than based on clever sums
Fatal - Winged Spear
Moon - less relevant for me as I'm primarily melee, so I think this will definitely be for New Game +(+), but I like the sound of a Moon Bastard Sword.
Crescent - Kilij
Blessed - Mirdan Hammer / Great Sword (although I still hanker for a Blessed Mace, but I suspect that's because I haven't swung one yet)
Vicious - Compound Longbow
Dark - Purple Flame all the way.

Also, making a Dark Purple Flame Shield is going to cost you a boatload of stones, hell it's going to cost you a boatload of stones just to get it to plus six so you branch to Dark.

Even as a melee (knight, highest stat is strength) guy, until I got a +4 dragon morning star, a Crescent Falchion +1 was my strongest weapon for a loooooooooooong time.

Brill, thanks! Now I definitely know what I'm doing there.

I got my scimitar up to about +7 just from running 2-X (I ran 2-2 sooo many times before I got Flamelurker down it was actually just ridiculous), so that's been my top for ages.

I don't entirely get your point on the Dark Purple Flame Shield. From what I can see, the only use for stones is upgrading shields, and none of them are any easier than the others (I might be mis-reading the wiki), so assuming I'm targetting Plat somewhere in the distance, I don't have much choice?

I would love to know how a SL1 playthrough would go. I've seen it mentioned a few times - has anyone done it yet?

That would really highlight for me how different this game is from most RPGs - grinding would be ENTIRELY optional, it would demonstrate that it's entirely possible to go through it purely based on your skill.

Pure White isn't necessary in every single world at once. Nothing happens. Just get pure white, hit up the wiki and see what's available to you then. For Pure Black, just die 5 times in body form and return to the Nexus.

I haven't found this to be true. I'm also going for a pure white initial run, and it seems to be coming along just fine - despite having got world 2 there first, and then not having returned to it in ages, it's sticking on white even as I defeat other bosses.

Might be due to the fact that I play offline the entire time, but I haven't had bosses in other worlds have any effect on other worlds' tendencies.

Either that, or I'm completely misunderstanding what you're saying.

A word of advice to anyone on their first run - Dragon weapons rock. I was struggling a little with world 4, until I decided to man up and get the Knight Sword with some Fire damage on it. Only got it to Dragon +3, but now I'm sailing along. I'm sure it'll soon be obselete as I get my stats up, but it's a great boon at the start.

Anyone got any great tips for Maneater? I am a mish-mash of melee and magic, so happy to try either depending on what works.

Next bit spoilered for game mechanics
I can more or less hold my own again the first one, with a semi-upgraded purple flame shield I can weather most of his attacks, and get a few in while chugging grass until he flys off, giving me a chance to properly recover. When the second spawns though I have no chance. I'm mostly fighting on the initial bridge as I seem to have more room to move there - might I be better off on the central circular platform? Cheers mate! Hope you enjoy it.

No idea about the online stuff (I don't have a PSN account), but for the others:

1. Online question

2. It all ties into world tendency. The wiki has full details (or as full as anywhere), but basically you can do some stuff to shift a world into 'white' (killing bosses etc) or 'dark' (dying while in body form for example). Making it 'whiter' makes the game a little easier, and in 'pure white' some extra stuff is unlocked. Making it 'darker' makes it harder (enemies have more health etc) and again at pure dark some extras become available.

People choose to suicide a lot in the Nexus because dying in body form in a world shifts it darker - in order to make sure it stays white they kill a boss in soul form (+1 white), suicide in the Nexus (no effect), play through the next bit in soul form and kill another boss (+1) etc. If you want to ignore world tendency for your first playthrough (as the consensus advice seems to be), don't sweat it.

3. You can leave bloodstains to give hints to other players if playing online - and see other players bloodstains in turn. You can also review bloodstains, a positive review will heal the placer, making the game a little easier for them. While most are gameplay related, this one is just asking for free health points.

4. Online question, skipped

5. You can't kill them yet. You can kill the red one in 1-2 and the blue in 1-4. Also getting pure white means they disappear and you can loot their treasure. They are best left alone for now. A nice feature in the game is the somewhat realistic 'you don't have to/can't kill everything' angle which I like.

6. See this page on the wiki to work out the symbols. There's no simple 'this weapon is better' sliding scale, each is different, both in terms of how you swing it and some have special added effects (e.g. something with 'Dragon' at the front does additional flame damage). I preferred to just try out new ones as I picked them up, and see how much damage they did. As a general rule though, ones with high AddedParams work out nicely as you level up, so getting the hang of those is worthwhile.

efb: Miracles, such as Heal, need a Talisman not a Wand. You'll get one in a bit. I still feel it's a shame that wasn't better explained.

I think 4-x is much easier, the bosses are pretty simple one you've worked out their tactics, and provided you take it slow the levels aren't too bad either. And then you can farm 4-2 like mad for all the upgrades you'll ever need.

And a question:
Earlier on in this thread people mentioned being cut off at NG+++, and unable to start again. But someone above referred to NG++++. Can you keep on restarting at increasingly tough difficulties with the corresponding higher soul drops, or does it terminate eventually?

I never find myself using evacuate.

If I'm far into a level, the only time I consider it is when I'm near a boss. In which case, I will need to come through it all again to get back there - risking just as many souls on the next run.

Gotcha. I was thinking in terms of game progression/soul farming - it seems useless for game progression, and for me at least the best way of soul farming has to be the first reaper in 4-2 followed by a hasty suicide off the cliff. Item farming I hadn't thought about, makes sense now though. Ta!

I am based in Europe, and selling copies I bought while out in HK. It's the Asian not NA version, but might still of interest to people in Europe who want to join in. I've shifted about 10 of my 30 copies to date, so have a fair few left. Selling for £40 + P&P (£43 to UK, £45 to mainland Europe) to goons, which is basically at cost. If anyone wants one, get in contact either here or on rabjohnson at gmail dot com.

Oh wow, getting some traffic in this thread again.

I'll be shutting this good ol' thread down tomorrow to coincide with the NA release of Demon's Souls, hopefully most of the pictures in the OP still work because I really don't feel like going out to get new ones.

Glad to see that enough people liked this game to merit three threads about it :)

If you could mention this in the OP, that would be great. If not, I'll cross-post over there when the new thread opens. Cheers!

Can anyone link me to some shops that ship the game to Europe? My order just got deleted as their supplier had run out of copies, and all the local shops price the game at ~25-50% more. :smith:

Don't know if you're still looking, but I have some import copies I brought back from HK a while ago. Asian version - so if you're specifically looking to play alongside Americans this isn't for you. But other than that the two are basically the same, and it works just fine.

If you're interested I'll post one out to UK for £43 and mainland Europe for £45. You can reach me at rabjohnson at gmail rather than get in the way of this (amazingly fast moving) thread.

Also, I am currently very angry that my TV is currently in pieces with all the wires boxed up. Reading the last 50 pages of this thread, there is nothing I want to do more now than fire it up myself and finally get past Maneater...

Just had an odd bug on the Maneater fight

Headed to the central bit, as makes sense, and sure enough a little while in the second Maneater spawned. However, after trying to double-team me once the second flew off - and never returned, even after I'd killed the first.

Anyone know what causes this bug and how to respawn him/avoid it happening? In the end I suicided, but am worried it will happen again

Were you wearing the thief ring?

I have hunch he's still there but just can't see each other and he just flies around.

More stuff on the 3-2 boss: yes, I was. The first kept coming back though, didn't occur to me that that might matter. Will try it again and see how I get on. Thanks!

I wonder what could be the record for lowest level/speed run for this game.

If I had any skills I would participate in a challenge of some kind.

Someone did it with a Soul Level 1 royal a while back - or at least did a significant portion. I found this very interesting as it totally proved that this game isn't about grinding - although that might make it easier it's not necessary.

My first instinct for a gimmick character would be one who used no magic ever - given the over-riding theme of 'magic is evil and summoned this fog'. I don't yet know how the plot ties together though and how valid that view of it is - not finished the game yet. A no magic playthrough would be interesting though, especially one that relied on minimal arrows and basically just meleeing stuff to death (perferably punching with the Hand of God for bonus awesome points).

They really should.

But if they insist there's always the option of going somewhere else - otherwise change your approach. Grinding soul levels is a fairly dull way to play this game.

This makes me sad. I am doomed to play this offline as my halls at Uni don't allow us to connect game machines to the network. I suspect I'll get a sudden rush of excitement again at Christmas when I pop home - until then my world is a lonely one.

Edit: On the plus side, The Old Monk fight was therefore ridiculously easy!

If you can get world 2 to pure white the Dragon Bone Smasher is made for you. Apart from that you'd have to upgrade a Great Sword or Claymore depending on how big you want your sword to be.

There's also two more 'large swords' you can get, but they're both pretty much at the end of the game, although you can get Demonbrand earlier if you murder Ostrava for his key.

E2:
As for upgrading regular weapons you probably want to make them either straight +10 or +5 crushing.

3-2 boss: The Dragon Bone Smasher (Keel Smasher in Asian version) kicked rear end for this fight. First half the first maneater kept crouching down clutching his head - a great opportunity to give him a real headache. Did have to switch out to a Dragon Long Sword for when both were around though.

The only downside was having to do the fight without any armour - and even still rolling and somewhat clunky. That just made me feel that little bit more badass - naked man with enourmous sword takes on 2 massive gargoyles and somehow wins.

Edit: Fixed code. Sorry!
