I think the melee combat is definitely far from button mashing. There's a lot that goes into proper timing, movement, and positioning that makes combat a lot more rewarding, there are still times when things die to mashing R1 (like the enemies in the first stage) but as you get further in you'll start having to form strategies. It's pretty sweet, having to come up with methods to fight each enemy.

All the classes seem to have their own quirks, I took to Knight and that means that I get right up in people's faces with my awesome sword and shield to bust their heads. There are other classes that really fly though, just darting around rolling and getting backstabs or nuking enemies with giant fireballs. I'm sure some of the Thieves/Nobles/other non-Knight weaklings from the old thread can follow this up.

I'm playing a Magician and don't have any of the big nukes yet, so I still do my fair share of sword/shield use (there's no 2 handed staves for magic users, so you'll always have a hand free for a shield if you want when you've got your casting catalyst/talisman equipped). Note that you can start casting a spell while moving, but when the spell actually goes off your character stops moving for a second or two, so you have to be careful about choosing when to shoot and when to keep moving. The Fire Spray spell is unique, though - it fires a cheap blob of fire every half a second or so you're holding down the button, and while each doesn't do much damage, you can keep moving as it's casting, so it's extremely handy against enemies that you absolutely can't stop moving around.

It's a good balancing act between knowing what enemies you are safe to engage and which ones are dangerous enough to justify spending MP on - between the MP regen rings, swords, and the fact that you can cheaply buy Spices later on for MP restores it's much less of a rationing act than early on, where you're going to be a melee character with a few powerful ranged shots as backup.

As has been said, though, the starting "classes" are simply initial sets of stats/equipment/magic, so find one that sorta fits your intended playstyle and then develop from there. If you wanted to start one of the heavy melee classes for strong armor and then put a bunch of soul levels into magic to become a nuker, go ahead!

How different are miracles to magic? Does it perform more of a support role, with things like evacuation and resurrect, with magic being more about doing damage, or are they pretty interchangeable? I guess I'm asking does a magic/miracle user specialise in one path or is it advantageous/economical to use both?

Magic is mainly offense with a side of utility spells, so someone specializing in magic can do a significant portion of their damage via spellcasting.

Miracles are mostly defense + utility. I think they get one very high level miracle attack but you're going to be using miracles to supplement your physical offense through the game.

That said, 10 faith is all you need to be able to equip 1 miracle, and there's some very good choices (Evacuation for 20K lets you warp back to the Nexus with all your souls at any point, Heal, etc), so pretty much anyone can justify a little faith for that.

In case anyone was wondering, it's possible to take out the Red Dragon in 1-2 with magic as well as the usual "Fire hundreds of arrows at it" method.

Stock up on spices, climb the first tower in the stage, and stand in front of the middle of the three sniper holes facing the direction the dragon strafes from. Equip a regular projectile spell (I used Soul Light, but if you don't have it or want to save MP and don't mind the process taking longer, Soul Arrow would probably work fine too) and any magic attack boosters you have.

When the dragon strafes the wall he basically flies almost straight at you. When he's nearing the end of his path, fire your magic at him (you don't have to lock on, and in fact the timing is a lot tighter if you try to lock and fire). If you've aimed and timed it right he'll fly right into your spell and take full damage (I was hitting for about 120 damage a Soul Light). If you want to make sure you're hitting him, lock on after you've fired and you can watch to see if the damage appears over his life bar.

Fire your spells, use spices as needed, and he'll go down pretty fast.

On an unrelated note, while Moving Soul Arrow is a tricky spell to use properly, it's a lot of fun to play with and potentially really strong. Was hitting the 1-3 boss with all five arrows and knocking 650 HP off him a cast.

I'm using a Crescent Kilij +4 as my weapon (it's stronger than the Crescent Falchion, assuming you've got the 14 strength to wield it) and switching my offhand between the Adjudicator Shield +2 and Large Sword of Searching depending on my needs.

As for Moving Soul Arrow, it's not the kind of spell you can just use full time, both due to the trickiness factor of the arrows fizzling out if they hit something and the MP cost, but it's very good as burst damage on dangerous enemies. I like to use it on red/phantom enemies (if you've got Hide up you can get into arrow range before they really spot you, and if they're not prepared to block the hits it does huge damage to them very fast) and it worked amazingly well on the 1-3 boss.

It's like Fire Spray in that it lends itself very well to keeping yourself moving out of danger while being able to do magical damage as openings arise - with Fire Spray you're basically locking on and strafing backwards/sideways to avoid attacks. With Moving Soul Arrow you put a bit of distance between yourself and the target, cast it, then when you've got an opening you quickly lock on and dash into range and they'll take the full blow.

He seems to have some relation to Yurt, though it may just be coincidental. I looked on the second floor, didn't see him, but did run into Yurt who was talking about how life wasn't precious. I attacked/killed Yurt, he mentioned that Mephistopheles was right about me, then the next time I entered the Nexus Meph was there. I'm uncertain if killing Yurt is any sort of trigger.

I think the classes are actually pretty balanced in terms of stat and item distribution, which is nice. Sure, starting as the Noble instead of the Magician is nice if you want to go as a caster for the early MP ring, but you're starting 1-1 with a weaker magic stat and an attack spell that isn't as strong versus the enemies you'll be fighting in the first stage (Soul Arrow instead of Flamethrower). Magician has to be more careful about MP use but they've got a stronger attack spell (and one that is extremely strong against Phalanx) and better stats almost entirely across the board due to starting at a higher soul level (plus Water Veil for dealing with those firebombing assholes).

Once you finish 1-1 it's mostly a non-issue since then you can go and grab any number of items that'll help round out your chosen class.

I ignored tendency until I was about 75% complete on my playthrough. I'm now using my stockpile of Ephemeral Eyes (and the odd resurrection from a boss kill or going to invade another player) to do the various Pure Black events (got enough Colorless Souls to get the Adjudicator Shield to +5 - 8 HP restored a second!)

I figure there's a decent enough chance that the difficulties with Pure White right now are due to bugs and/or unintended changes from the last patch, so I'll hit those up on New Game+ if they get around to making it more feasible again.

Sadly not. The only thing the higher levels of the shield provide are increased HP regen (2 HP at base, then 3, 4, 5, 6, and finally 8 hp/sec).

Before you start spending the colorless souls to upgrade it try it out for a bit and see if the damage you take on physical blocks is going to be an issue for you. If not, it's definitely worth pumping it up. 480 HP/minute is basically a full heal for my mage if I'm in soul form with the Cling Ring on.

I've got ridiculous amounts of herbs in my stash now (I've maxed out the 99 storage for Late Moon Herbs) thanks to the shield keeping me healed during normal level running and 25 luck + Sword of Searching for massive item drops (1-3 is a goldmine of herbs).

So I just completed World 5, and either I made some sort of horrible mistake in the process or the game just wants me to think that I did.

Sure, World 5 is a poisonous cesspool and full of death and decay, but then I get to Astraea. She seems to want nothing more than to create a sanctuary in the middle of the chaos and she's got a knight perfectly willing to protect her as she does so. She's essentially helpless once I manage to get Vinland out of the way, she falls quickly to three Moving Soul Arrow volleys, and I get the Pureblood Soul. Now there's this really ominous organ song playing in the Nexus. Moreover, Astraea's soul can either get me another cloud spell from Freke, or a healing spell from Yuria (and her witchcraft is supposed to be the dark arts).

For all the NPC chatter about how the Demons Souls are a source of evil power and I need to be careful (admittedly from the priests, those pansies), this is the first time the game's actually got me wondering just how heroic I'm being.

I don't know if I glitched up the AI on the 1-4 boss or what, but that was comically simple. I immediately just moved to hug the left wall next to the stairs, the King wandered my way slowly, then turned around and didn't move. I sorta walked into range, let the Death Cloud plague slowly drain him of HP, then got impatient and whacked him with some quick Moving Soul Arrows. He didn't react. If I'd given it 20 minutes the plague alone would have killed him.

Note for anyone who wants the Paring Dagger but can't get World 3 to White tendency: you get one if you kill a particular NPC - Mephistopheles in the Nexus. If you complete all the assassination quests Meph will attack you then - I assume if you don't want to kill the others you could just get the Black Character tendency so Meph shows up and just take her out then. The wiki doesn't have that one listed, so if anyone has an account they can toss that up in the item lists.

tazman posted:

Then whats the best way to farm colourless souls? Or is that the only way?

There's no real way to farm the Colorless Souls, so you have to use 'em wisely. You can get ten or so a game.

5 from Primevil Demons (no respawn) - seems like a high drop rate but I made sure to kill them with 25 luck + Sword of Searching so be ready to quit the game for another try if you get stiffed on the drop.
1 in 1-1 on a corpse past the pure white/black gate at the start.
2 from the Crow in 4-1 (trade a Talisman of God and the Gold Mask
2 from Mephistopheles assassinations - Patches and Biorr . Note to get to these two souls you have to have already killed Freke and Urbain , so there are consequences to trying to get these.

I think that's all of them unless someone discovers another way to get them. It's probably worth checking what you get for upgrading gear with the souls on the Wiki before you spend them due to their scarcity. At least there's no trophy for a fully upgraded Colorless item!

What should I be doing? I'm about 4 Equip points from being able to equip a Ring of Great Strength and doing Noble-esque rolls.

What spells are you trying to use against the other players? If it's not a bigger nuke like Fireball, Moving Soul Arrow, or presumably Firestorm/Rage of God (don't have them) then it's not going to do the burst damage you need. You could also try Death Cloud if you have it to plague them and give them something else to worry about.

I've probably got about a 35-40% success rate invading other players, so it's not easy, especially since there's generally lag due to the distances involved. If they aren't smart enough to get the jump on you (by hiding near the Archstone where you spawn) then a giant game of cat and mouse can work to your advantage, since all the pressure is on them - as an invader you have absolutely nothing to lose unless you get real sloppy and fall off a cliff, and they've got to win or they get knocked back to soul form.

I'm not sure if it does change your tendency towards black, but if I join a game and the host is co-oping I like to take out the soul form players they've got first - since they have less HP than a living character they can be dropped pretty fast, and you want to even the odds ASAP.

I generally try to get close and blast 'em with Moving Soul Arrows, but don't be afraid to retreat and change strategies.

Really, though, don't be too frustrated if you have dry spells where you just can't win. Unless you're co-oping yourself there's really no chance you're going to accidentally shift your character tendency back towards white and it doesn't reset between sessions, so a kill here and there and you'll be meeting with Meph sooner than you think.

I finished the game up, immediately hopped into New Game + (you start 1-1 alive this way), got invaded by a single black phantom right before Phalanx, killed it, then killed Phalanx. Pure White in world 1 just from those two things.

You can move straight into 1-3 to rescue Yuria if you want (or, in theory I guess you could just haul rear end right through World 1 and end the game extremely prematurely)

Once you know how to play the game properly and have an idea of what to expect from enemies, the game actually becomes much simpler, even if things do a lot more damage to you in New Game+. I've done all of 1-1 through 1-3 without dying once, and that includes taking out the Red Dragon, Miralda, and four separate invading black phantoms. I know there's going to be enemies and bosses in the other worlds that are going to have me swearing up a storm when I branch out to them, but it reminds me of a Ninja Gaiden - once you know how to play, it can actually be easier in later games despite the increased difficulty setting.

It's for that reason that if you intend on playing through the game more than once I recommend not worrying about Pure White tendencies the first time through - the boost you get for killing bosses while alive is massive now, and once you know what to expect from a boss and how to handle it the odds of you being able to walk out of the chamber with that bonus go way up. Co-op helps too.

The Large Sword of Searching flat out doubles your character's "item drop" stat (the number that the Luck stat increases), so anything that isn't a guaranteed drop will be affected by having equipped.

If there's a way to skip down the list then I don't know how to trigger it.

Here's what I'd do to get the Foe Ring with minimal impact on your game. Leave Meph alone in the Nexus until you've completed everything but 1-4, and complete that as much as possible (kill the Blue Dragon if you're planning on doing that). Set your Miracles/Magic as you want them for the 1-4 boss and for 1-1 on the next cycle (don't really need to set anything special for 1-1 as it's simple, but if you're decent with magic might as well give yourself some sort of fire spell for easy Phalanx roasting). Do the assassinations all in a row, just kill, get reward, kill, get reward. Once Yuria's dead you'll get the Foe Ring, then Meph will attack. She's easily dispatched.

Now that you've got the Ring, just hop back into 1-4, finish the level, then you can finish the game. After you complete 1-1 on the next cycle then Freke and Urbain's apprentices will be back in the Nexus and you can change your magic/miracles around as you see fit and just proceed.

Note if you wait until you've done 1-3 to start doing Meph's assassinations then you're going to miss out on the Ostrava kill/Talisman of Beasts reward, so you'll have to go take out Black Phantom Scirvir in 2-2 to get one of those.

I don't think the black phantoms scale with you, they're just significantly tougher than the rest of the enemies you'll face in any given level.

I'm using so many Fresh Spices these days it's kind of absurd, but fireballs at 20 MP add up real fast. They're dirt cheap anyway. Plus it's fun being able to one-shot most enemies with the Kris Knife +5 and Magic Sharpness ring. I need to go get the Monk's headgear for extra fun - the lack of magic defense isn't going to be a real issue, given most magic one-shots me anyway.

If I do play another character down the line (going to go for Platinum with my mage, I'm almost done the second playthrough and the last two should be pretty fast - my new game + has taken about a third of the time the original cycle lasted), I'd be curious about trying a meat shield character - tons of endurance and strength. It'd be fun to walk around using Garl Vinland's gear, once you get the 36 strength to one-hand his bludgeon.

Is the Firespray spell ever good for anything? I just bought it and I think I'm regretting it a little, as it does maybe 70 damage with the kris and ring of magical sharpness. The firerate's kinda nice, but it doesn't seem to ever break enemy blocks like the other attacks do.

It won't break the block because it's a bunch of tiny hits rather than a giant blast. What Firespray is useful for is taking out small/weak enemies cheaply (insects, rats, slow moving yet hard hitting humanoids, etc) and for keeping mobile against an enemy you don't want to stand still against.

Aside from PvP purposes, it's also possible to force the enemy AI to do what you want it to. Take the Cthulhu mages in World 3 for example - they've got three spells to cast on you - the sonic waves they unleash if you're very close to them, the paralysis orb they fire if you're at a short-mid range, and the soul arrows they fire from a distance. They're deadly - but if you force them to fire the electricity and you dodge it, their followup action is going to be to try to run up to you and get in range of the sonic waves. As they're chasing you you can simply back up while holding down Firespray and you'll burn them to a crisp before they decide that running after you isn't going to work. I had far more luck with the Black Phantom mages by retreating and using Firespray than any other tactic I had available early on.

It's not the greatest spell around, and in a lot of ways it's made obsolete by Moving Soul Arrow once you've got adequate Magic, but it's a decent little spell niche that it fills for 1 magic slot.

It's not really a waste anyway, as the other magical option for that soul is Ignite, and honestly I haven't found a use for that one - it's so short range that if I'm going to purposely let things get that close they're going to take a combo from my sword.

tl;dr - Firespray is the only spell in the game that you can use at full efficiency without limiting your movements or putting you at risk of getting nailed when stopping to cast.

Trophy question, in case anyone knows the answer - for the gold trophies (get all magic, all miracles, etc), do they have to be on the same character all at once, or is it simply a total PSN account tally?

I think I'm going to roll up a heavy tank build to play around with and if I can use the Old Monk and Maiden souls to get their weapons and have them count towards the running total then it's one less playthrough on my magician to worry about.

Anyone had luck farming up a Pure Bladestone? I'm sitting on 32 luck and have a sword of searching and I can't get one of the things to drop.

Wiki says they drop off 4-2 black phantom skeletons (I'm aware of three at pure black tendency - one dual wield phantom and two of the golden ones, all along the second outer cliff pathway) and the black skeleton in the hidden passage. I'm getting splinters and the odd chunk, but still no Pure drop.

I'm assuming it's just bad luck on the random drops, but if anyone can confirm a drop off either I'd appreciate it.

I got mine off the BP dual-katana skeleton near the two golden ones. The drop rate is abysmal though, somewhere around 1~3%.

I don't mind farming them since I pull about 60-70K souls in three minutes by killing those three skeletons and the reaper, but I just wanted to be sure that there was a chance. Thanks for the confirmation!

Also, for the monk's headpiece, when you earn it is it on the ground after you return to your game or do you automatically get it after the kill (if you get the drop)?

Hahaha I got this this morning and was going through the tutorial fine, until I get to the boss and he instakills me. Got taken to the nexus and couldn't work out a way to get back to that guy but hey, here's a blue glowy dude that tells me to use a stone so I go through to what i'm assuming is 1-1. I'm doing fine, going through up the stairs until some guy drops an iron ball on me, but i'm still alive. Then I get slaughtered by what i'm guessing is a blue eyed knight. But no big deal, I run all the way back and go the other way, take out a few archers, then get slaughtered by a red eyed thing with a shield and a spear :(

It's really really fun but i'm wondering - since I died on the tutorial and now have 50% of my max HP, the guy with the spear pretty much 1 hits me. How do I go about regaining my physical form? I can nearly kill the guy if i'm lucky but he's just too quick for me right now - compared to the cakewalk enemies throughout the level so far it's a shock going from them to him. Playing a wanderer.

You're not supposed to kill the red-eyed knight right now, so come back to him another time. As you've noticed the blue eyed knights are enough of a challenge for you and you're supposed to fight them!

Near where you find the first blue knight is a staircase down the main wall (after you kill the knight, instead of going in the door he was guarding keep going forward to the far door) - you can open a shortcut to make it easier to get back up there, but more importantly you can find the Cling Ring right by the bottom of the stairs, which increases your max HP in soul form to roughly 75% of max. You'll be wearing this often!

To get revived you can either kill a boss (either in your game or by going into another person's game to co-op and killing one there), invading another player and killing them as a black phantom, or using a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes - those are uncommon but if you don't waste them you can still wind up with 25+ of them over a playthrough.

If you like the dagger or spear style of combat and want to favor Dex, then Sunday Punch's suggestion of going the Sharp weapon path is a good one - bladestones are pretty common drops in world 4 and at +3 the dex bonus jumps to A rank.

If you're a fan of the curved sword type combat (scimitar, falchion, etc) then the Crescent Falchion is a good choice for the added magical damage - alternately, you can go Sharp or you could go for Tearing, which increases bleed damage and has a huge Dex bonus (S rank at +3).

Bladestones are off skeletons in world 4, and you can get Suckerstones (for Tearing) off the slugs in 4-2 and 5-2.

Don't hesitate to upgrade some weapons to play around with them - especially using Hardstones and Sharpstones, which are exceedingly common drops and can be purchased from several vendors.

Edit: To clarify, Hard and Sharpstones are your generic weapon upgrade stones - at certain points along a weapon upgrade path you can shift them into a different weapon type with different properties, and those use different stones. The "Sharp" weapon type confusingly uses Bladestones to upgrade and NOT Sharpstones.

Well, my issue is that I'm going for Platinum and I'm sort of required to get all the rings/weapons/magics/miracles to do so. It's very amusing, I need 2 weapons, 1 ring, 1 miracle, and 7 magic spells to get all those Gold Trophies. It's just infuriating, they should have balanced Soul rewards better.

I agree. Old Monk is used for four things as well. It's a bit much, but at least on that final playthrough you can just do worlds 3 and 5 and be done with it.

World Tendency is a neat mechanic but it could definitely use some major refinements. At least pure white (which is the hard one) only rewards you once per world and that's it, whereas pure black (which is easy to get) has the colorless souls each playthrough.

As for Astraea's soul and the magic you get from it, I actually found it more interesting that when you get world 5 to pure white and talk to Selen she mentions how despite the filth and decay of the valley, there's a very definite sense of purity to everything.

Dear god, I hate whoever designed the drop rate for Pure Bladestone. I've been at this for two hours, sneaking up behind the BP Dual-Katana Black Skeleton in 4-2 trying to get it and the best I've ever done is a single Chunk of Bladestone. Just about every other Pure can be gotten from a Crystal Gecko, Treasure Drop, or Boss Victory but Bladestone? gently caress you, fight this skeleton for 2 hours.

Yeah, it sucks rear end. At least it's worth a ridiculous amount of souls each run.

Maneater's a lot easier if you just stick on the central platform and use the brazier to your advantage. I died a ton on my first playthrough because I was trying to strafe around and dodge on the long walkways and kept falling off. Circling the brazier and firing from there then dodging back behind it helps.

Then again I was doing that on my second playthrough with Moving Soul Arrow, and three of those killed each Maneater. Still, Soul Light would work fine.

3-2 is getting annoying. I've broken one of the chains (the one you can reach from the top floor of the heart tower, before the tentacle blocking the path) but can't seem to get anywhere else. All other paths seem to be dead ends and the map isn't helping me much.

From the first chain tower there's a side path that leads to some platforms that have hanging cages next to them. Step into any one of the cages.
