Captain Charisma posted:I've seen the first two episodes, and I know that's a small sample to work with, but after being used to The Shield's break neck, edge of your seat at every moment pace, I found it incredibly boring and tedious. I'm not expecting something like an Armenian Money Train, but does it get any less plodding? I'm as big a fan of The Shield as you will find on this planet. I've said numerous times that it's the second best show in history - second only, of course, to The Wire. However, that gap between first and second stretches for leagues. Mind you, this is due very little to any shortcomings with The Shield, and is preponderantly owed to just how truly remarkable of a show The Wire is (despite its weird final season). They're completely different shows. Don't let the pace of one influence your opinion of the other.

CommaToes posted:I dunno. Whenever I saw Levy doing that smirk of his, I literally shook my fist at the screen. In a show short on justice, I think the most vindicating scene in the entire series is when Omar puts Levy in his loving place on the witness stand.

When The Wire began, I thought to myself: 'there's no way I'll ever be able to think of this kid as anyone other than Kenny Wangler.' Now that The Wire is over, there's no way I'll be able to think of him as anyone other than Bodie.

Whoa I didn't know the Treme pilot was filmed already. Thank god HBO is returning to form in 2010. The ASoIaF pilot should be filming later this year too ![]() ![]()

Professor Funk posted:A Song of Ice and Fire maybe? I just googled it, and that's what most of the results were. I know it's a famous series of fantasy novels, so I guess it would make sense. Yeah, it's a terrifically grown-up series of fantasy novels. The guy who played Scott Templeton in s5 of The Wire (he also directed/wrote The Visitor and The Station Agent) is directing the pilot.

I think season 2 of Rome is as good as the first when you take into account the constraints they were working under. That show is definitely a close second in the upper-echelon of HBO after The Wire for me. When The Sopranos was at its best, it was about on par with The Wire - problem is it was too uneven more often than not. It's sad to see the state that HBO is in right now, but their lineup for the next couple of years is full of shows that appear to have the potential for top-tier HBO greatness.

SneakySneaks posted:I don't know about that, I'll always doubt any decisions the network makes after the last batch of pilots ("True Blood" "Ladies Detective" "Hung" "JFC" are all sub-par for HBO). I think Treme has promise but the plot sounds pretty boring (jazz musicians in NO doesn't scream interesting to me), but everyone involved is extremely talented so I'm sure it will turn out good. I don't think ASoFaI is materializing right now as all reports have dissipated and I haven't heard any info in years. Aside from Big Love I think HBO has become lazy with their programing, they're still better than Showtime but the crown has gone to AMC for now. No, it's definitely materializing. HBO has it all worked out with the Irish government to film the pilot there this October. They have a director and he's already cast Tyrion. edit: On top of that, every major upcoming HBO show other than Bored To Death is a serious drama: Treme, Shameless, Boardwalk Empire, The Pacific, Game of Thrones, and Gentlemen of Leisure. They'll come back
