so i've been playing goalkeeper for maybe two months now. after playing incredible amounts of fifa 10, i decided to sign up for "beginner soccer" at the local community college. today the coach asked me if i'd play keeper for his friend's team in a summer league and for the school's team in the fall.

he says i need to work on my "presence" in between the posts. whatever that means. the players say i need to work on catching low balls and say it's impossible to score high on me. probably because i'm tall at 6' 4.5"

it's time to buy some better gloves. i'm really leaning towards a high-end fingersave model. anyone have experience with these? i've bent my pinky and ring fingers on my right hand backwards so many times now. my pinky looks like a purple lil' smoky sausage.

Presence has always meant to me taking charge of your area physically, especially for high ball and crosses into and around the 6 yard box. Dont be afraid to throw your weight around, especially early. You've got the officials protecting you unless you do something really silly.

I've always been a fan of flattening someone if you get the chance. Not maliciously, just if they're going to stand their ground under a high ball and you've got to go through/over them to get a punch in dont be afraid to do that.

i do that all the time though. during the first time we played a "real" game i flattened at least 5 people. since then, all the players in the class are afraid to get anywhere near me and openly say so. i'm really not afraid to be aggressive as i have in excess of 6" and 75 lbs on everyone in the class.

he kept talking about looking "professional." i think i must look incredibly raw since i have no training.. the coach hasn't played keeper much at all so he can only give the most rudimentary advice. he did tell me to fist the ball more though.

i'm going to go the library tomorrow to see if they have any books or tapes on goalkeeping. any recommendations?

As you get more comfortable with the game communicating will become much easier for you. Now you probably dont really know what to say because you have no idea what is about to happen. Eventually though you will be able to talk to your defenders "Rich left shoulder" if you want them to pick up a man, or "Rich watch that back post run" if you see a guy making the run. so i dropped $130 on gloves today

uhlsport ABSOLUTGRIP Ergonomic SUPPORTFRAME X-Change

i probably could've gotten them cheaper. i jumped the gun at the local soccershop because i had practice in less than an hour.

i like them a lot though. they have a very thin fingersave frame that i've taken out. i like that i have the option to slide the frame in if i'm going to be taking a lot of hard shots from short range.. whether it be in practice or indoors. the grip is ridiculous! i practiced with them a little bit before i switched to my $60 dollar adidas ones for PK training (i'm so sore ). the difference in grip was so noticable! it felt like i'd rubbed vaseline on the adidas gloves. it was really that noticable.

my adidas gloves disintegrated in less than two months, but i'd bet that's because i didn't take care of them. i've looked up some guides on glove maintenance, and i will be following them to a T to keep my new gloves in tip top shape. i'm going to try to make them last as long as possible. for $130 they better lost a long time!!

what do my fellow goalkeepers do to maintain their gloves?

so i played my first ever game today!! i was in goal

i hadn't met any of my teammates before. they were mostly not-quite-fit 30 year olds. including me, 10 people showed up. one guy got hurt in the first 10 mins, and another guy went down shortly after the 2nd half began. the other team was full of fit guys in their early 20s.

i gave up one goal in the first half. it was on a deflection on a free kick right outside the box. it hit a brick in the wall then bounced just inside the post into the goal. the possession in the first half was probably 65-35 in the opposing team's favor.

the second half was really lopsided.. probably 85-15 possession them. my team ran out of energy. the only time we got the ball out of our half of the field was on my punts. we couldn't keep possession for more than three passes. i ended up giving two goals in that half. the first one was on another deflection. the guy crossed it from just inside the box on the left side. it was a real rocket and bounced off the chest of one of my CBs then into the top corner of the goal. the other goal was really frustrating. being a beginner newb, my goal kicks aren't very strong, so one of the defenders was taking them. he shanked one right to their CF who then passed it to their unmarked RW (and best player) who blasted it a bending shot with the outside of his foot. it hit the far post and went straight across the line before the spin took it over by an inch.

i did much better than i thought i would. i didn't make any boneheaded mistakes and had at least a dozen saves. there was one time when i should've come out to snatch a through ball, but many other times when i did come out when necessary. one such time resulted in a pretty heavy collision. i got knocked solidly on the back of my leg. i'll live though

overall it was very fun!! i'm excited for next week's game. i hope we can field a full team :| 3 men short was harsh

your positioning sounds good to defend against shots. how far out on the wing are they when they pass it? if they're almost near the sidelines (touchlines, apparently), you don't have to worry about a shot as much as you have to worry about a cross. it's easier to come forward than it is to go backward. if they're almost at the touchline, i'll position myself similarly to when i'm defending against a corner kick.

remember that as the keeper, you have the best view of the action. you need to be shouting at your team to let them know what you're seeing. if you see an unmarked man sprinting down the center of the field, yell at one of your teammates to pick him up.

a shot shouldn't slip through your hands. are you wetting your gloves before you play? do you have proper catching technique?

i had a pretty awesome save today

we were up 2-1 with the clock winding down in the 2nd half. their striker gets some space at the top of the 18.. i'm about 8 yds out after coming out for another reason a few seconds earlier. so he takes a low shot, and i hear their fans celebrate. i dive to my right fully extended and stop the ball dead with my finger tips! i hear their fans groan and my teammates scream. i pull the ball toward me and let my team push back up the field. i unleash a mega-punt that goes out of bounds at the other touchline. the ref blows the whistle and we win!

Well, came in on my roommate's team as a ringer to play GK, and for a first competitive game playing there it wasn't bad. We won 3-2, but the only real fuckup I made was when I played it too short, thinking that the defender was going to run onto it, and he didn't, gave away an easy goal.

Anyways, what I wanted to ask was, do you guys have any recommendations for decent gloves/glove care? I've got a pair of cheapo ones, but they haven't got any finger-bracing and the palms are pretty messed.

i dropped $130 on a pair of uhlsport gloves at the local soccer shop. they're sweet. they have removable finger protection. i personally don't like finger protection, so i leave them out.

the difference between the $60 adidas ones and the $130 uhlsport ones is night and day. it's really worth it if you're going to play a lot and take care of them.

as far as maintenance goes, there are a few simple things that can improve the effectiveness and durability of your gloves.

-make sure to wet them before use. i don't mean sopping wet. i mean put an ounce or so of water into each palm and rub it all over the latex. it's been hot lately, so i've been wetting them at half time. i sometimes even do it during the game after a foul or something if necessary. you'll get a feel for when you need to wet them.

-wash them after each use. run the faucet to lukewarm, get them sopping wet, take a spritz of handsoap, and rub all the dirt off. they should look "like new" afterward. gently ring them out; be careful not to rip the stitching.

-during play, get up without using your hands. not only will this spare your gloves, but it'll make your hands available to make saves.

i hope this helped.

ps: be sure to check out this site. great stuff on there!!!

i've tried a few different kinds of setups:

-full shinguards with ankle support
-"blades" with the little elastic tube thing they came with to hold them in place.
-blades without the elastic tube but halfway inside a regular pair of socks with a pair of soccer socks pulled over with tape around the bottom but not the top.

i find the last one to be best, but i still have the problem of the sock coming down. taping above the shinguard doesn't hold them in place any better. the guy at my local soccer shop told me to try using electrical tape instead of athletic tape.

not wearing shinguards is not an option. the leagues i'm in require all players to be wearing them. i like to wear them even if they're not required. the extra protection gives me confidence to be aggressive.

i was particularly glad i was wearing shinguards after a play that happened today. it was a 50/50 high bouncing ball. i ran out and jumped to grab the ball with my leg leading the way for protection. i hit the guy in the face with my shinguard/knee and he went down. i think he had a concussion by the looks of it, but i didn't get the chance to chat with him after the game. i felt bad :|

so i was playing keeper today when i hurt my knee.

it was a low, simple shot a few feet to my right. i go to plant my right foot into the ground when i feel a pop on the inside of my right knee. i sort of fell after that and agonizingly watched the ball roll into the netting. fortunately we were up 4-2 after that goal.es

i stayed down for a minute rubbing it to see if anything was out of place. there wasn't, so i got up and tested it. initially, my knee felt as if it would return to normal in a matter of minutes. as you might expect, it didn't. i could feel it beginning to burn, and it felt unstable from side to side. from front to back it felt strong. i requested a sub, and our backup keeper came on.

but not before a goal kick had to be taken. because of the injury, i deferred the kick to my central defender. he proceeded to completely flub the kick. his approach was from straight on, and he went on to attempt a toe punt. he somehow managed to kick the ground a good 4 inches in front of the ball, yelling out a profanity in spanish as he fell to the ground. the ball rolled maybe 10 yards outside the box when an attacker ran onto it. the beleaguered defender hobbles up and dispossesses the forward and toe punts it (this time with his weak foot) up to the center circle. he immediately begins rolling on the ground grabbing the afflicted big toe. i was cracking up

back to the knee. it's really starting to tighten up. i iced it 20 mins on/20 mins off for 2 hrs earlier. i'm just trying to stay off it and keep it elevated as much as possible.

anyone have advice on how to take care of it? what exactly did i injure? how long will i be sidelined for?
