Brainworm, what amount of time do you typically spend on an individual novel in your classes? My senior year in high school I took AP English, and we spent 4 months reading The Things They Carried. I loved The Things They Carried when I read it, but the sheer amount of time spent parsing and discussing it made everyone in the class hate it to the point where every line became a joke. By the end of the class, I doubt there were any English Majors left. Was my teacher giving a standard collegiate course, or was she simply crazy? Also, I am a big science fiction junkie, are there any books you would recommend that are in the vein of Alfred Bester?

Hey Brainworm you mentioned that you were an AP Reader. Having gone through an extraordinarily hellish AP English class (where 3 books were covered the entire year and 2 of them were assigned for summer reading). What do you feel about the AP English curriculum? Have any memories of some simply terrible AP essays? Any thoughts of great insights from high school students under a time crunch?
